Mustangs fall to Vikings in OT

The H eppner M ustangs
dropped into a first-place tie with
the Umatilla Vikings in the Colum
bia Basin Conference by losing
67-61 in overtime on Friday, Feb.
1. The fifth-ranked Mustangs
dropped to 8 and 1 in the CBC
and 15 and 2 overall.
The Mustangs and Vikings
started out even as M ichael
McCabe hit a short jumper off a
drive and Brad Adams scored
twice off of offensive rebounds
to give the Mustangs a 6-5 lead.
The Vikings came back to take a
18-6 lead before Brian Rust hit a
three-pointer, but the Vikings
scored again to make it 20-9.
Adams scored another rebound
basket but the Vikings came back
with five points, the last three on
a long shot at the buzzer, to take
a 25-11 lead after one.
The Vikings extended the lead
to 30-11 early in the second be
fore the Mustangs got on track.
David Norton hit two free throws,
McCabe hit a jumper, drove the
baseline for a lay-in and scored
off a long pass from Stefan
Matheny, and Norton scored off
a rebound to make it 30-21. After
a Viking free throw, McCabe con
verted a three-point play and
Norton hit a short jumper to make
it 31 -26. The Vikings scored, but
McCabe hit a long jumper and
scored off a pass from Norton to
get the Mustangs to within 33-30
at halftime.
The Mustangs regained the
lead early in the third as Matheny
hit a running jumper and then fed
. McCabe for a lay-in. After a
three-point play by the Vikings,
Rust scored on a pass from
Adams to tie it at 36-36. The Vi
kings came back with three points,
but McCabe scored on a pass
from Matheny who then hit a
baseline jumper to make it 42-41.
The Vikings took the lead back,
but Adams hit a baseline jumper
and Kevin Drake hit a three-point
JV boys take two over weekend

The Heppner Mustang JV
boys came back for a 48-40 win
over the Umatilla Vikings on Fri
day, Feb. 1, in Umatilla, and re
turned on Saturday, Feb. 2, to take
an easy home victory over the
Sherman County Huskies, 79-38.
The wins improved the Mus
tangs’ record to 13 and 1 on the
year with a chance to avenge their
only loss in the last two years with
a game at Weston-McEwen on
Friday, Feb. 8. Stanfield will come
to Heppner on Saturday, Feb. 9,
then the Mustangs will travel to
Pilot Rock on Tuesday, Feb. 12.
The Mustangs got off to a
slow start in Umatilla, falling be
hind 14-8 after one, but came
back to tie it at 18-18 at halftime
with the help of a three-pointer
from Doug Orwick.
The Mustangs got another
three-pointer from Luke Murray
in the third and six points from
Donald Adams, including a short
jumper at the buzzer to take a 33-
32 lead after three.
The teams traded baskets
until Brian Smith converted a
three-point play to give the Mus
tangs a 38-37 lead with 4:00 re
maining. The Vikings came right
back with a three-pointer to take
a 40-38 lead. Murray hit another
three-pointer with 3:00 left to
make it 41 -40 then fed Smith for
a baseline lay-in to make it 43-40
with 1:15 left. After a steal, Smith
fed Josh Winters for a lay-in to
make it 45-40 and Winters hit a
jumper with :40 left to make it 47-
40 and seal the win.
Smith led a balanced scoring
effort with nine points, with
Adams and Murray each adding
eight points. Winters finished with
seven points and Conor Kilkenny
added six.

Norton scored on a rebound
basket and Matheny hit a three-
pointer, but the Vikings came right
back to tie it at 52-52. Matheny
hit a running jumper, but the Vi
kings came back with a three-
pointer and a free throw to go up
56-54. Matheny hit a long jumper
to tie it up with 2:00 left and both
teams had chances to score down
the stretch but neither could score,
sending the game to overtime.
The overtime period started
out well for the Mustangs as Rust
scored on a rebound basket, then
fed McCabe for a lay-in on an
inbounds play and Norton hit one
of two free throws to make it 61-
56. The Vikings came back to tie
with 1:39 left, took the lead with
1:00 left and the Mustangs were
forced to foul. The Vikings hit
enough free throws down the
stretch to take the win.
McCabe led all scorers with
23 points and had two steals, with
Matheny adding 11 points, four
assists, four rebounds, two steals
and two blocked shots. Norton
had nine points, 13 rebounds, three
steals, two assists and two
blocked shots. Adams had eight
points, 16 rebounds and two
blocked shots. Rust had seven
points and two assists.

‘C ’ team defeats Umatilla JVs
The lone Cardinal 4C’ team
defeated the Umatilla Viking JVs,
2-40, on January 22.
Top scorer for the lone
team was Til Tullis with 10 points
and three rebounds. Tyler Raible
was close behind with nine points
and four rebounds. C urtis
Thompson had eight points and
five rebounds. Mike Radie had six
points, three rebounds, three
assists and three steals. Taylor
McElligott had six points, five
rebounds and three steals. Jeff
Hunt had six points and three
assists. John Collin made three
points, four rebounds, two assists
and three steals. Scoring two
points apiece were Cayle Krebs,
who also made 10 rebounds, and
Arthur Ekstrom, who added three
rebounds. Tim Doherty made

Bergstrom made two.
The Cardinals shot 23-48
for 48 percent and made 42

The Mustangs left no doubt
against the Huskies, taking an 18-
3 lead after one. with Winters hit
ting 10 points. Justin Botefuhr and
Kyler Lovgren each made five
points as the Mustangs extended
their lead to 42-12 at halftime.
Winters had seven points in
the third, including a three-point
er, but the Huskies came out hot,
outscoring the Mustangs 19-11 to
narrow the gap to 53-31 going into
the fourth.
The Huskies were no match
though, as the Mustangs coasted,
getting nine points from Botefuhr.

Botefuhr finished with a
game-high 20 points, with Winters
adding 17, as all the Mustangs
scored. Seitz added 11 points, and

The Heppner Mustang girls cut a 19-point Sherman County lead
late in the third quarter to a six-point lead with 3:00 remaining in the
game, but couldn’t get all the way back. The Mustangs eventually
lost, 52-34, on Saturday. Feb. 2, in Heppner. The loss drops the Mus
tangs’ Columbia Basin Conference record to 6 and 4 and their overall
record to 10 and 8.
The Mustangs will travel to Weston-McEwen on Friday, Feb. 8,
and will host Stanfield on Saturday, Feb. 9. The Mustangs will then
travel to top-ranked Pilot Rock on Tuesday, Feb. 12, before finishing
out the regular season by hosting Wahtonka on Friday, Feb. 15.
Shanna Rietmann hit a short jumper to get the Mustangs out to a
quick 2-0 lead, but the Huskies came back to take a 6-2 lead. Jodie
Carlson hit a jumper and Rietmann hit a rebound basket to tie it at 6-
6, only to see the Huskies come back to take a 12-6 lead. Meghan
Bailey hit a three-pointer, but the Huskies returned with two of their
own to take an 18-9 lead after one.
Brett Barber hit a three-pointer to open the second, but back came
the Huskies with another six point run to take a 24-12 lead. Bailey and
Rietmann scored on drives to the basket and Kelsey Greenup hit one
of two free throws, but the Huskies extended their lead to 32-17.
Rietmann hit two free throws while the Huskies scored to end the
first half with a 34-19 lead.
The Huskies extended their lead to 38-19 before Rietmann scored
off a drive and Tylynn Smith hit a lay-in. The Huskies returned back
with a bucket but Rietmann scored on a drive to end the third with the
Huskies leading 40-25.
Stefanie Hanson scored off a pass from Rietmann, Madison Bailey
had a steal and lay-in, Meghan Bailey hit a three-pointer and Smith hit
a lay-in on a pass from Rietmann to make it 40-34 with 3:00 left. The
Mustangs couldn't get anything to drop the rest of the game and were
forced to foul with the Huskies making eight of 13 free throws down
the stretch to take the win.
Rietmann led the Mustangs with 12 points, three rebounds and
two assists, with Meghan Bailey adding eight points, six rebounds and
two steals. Smith had four points and three rebounds. Greenup grabbed
six rebounds and Madison Bailey had two steals.

“This by far was our best
team effort,” said lone coach Jim
Swanson. “I was really pleased
for their 110 percent effort on both
offense and defense. They never
gave up on the rebounding as we
out-rebounded them 42-26.
Everyone played a big part of the
win. We had nine people score.
They all played hard, especially
Tim Doherty on his defense. I’m
really proud of them.

CBC record fell to 6 and 3 and
their overall record dropped to 10
and 7 with the loss.
The Mustangs started out
with Jesse Kempas hitting a
three-pointer and Shanna
Rietm ann m aking two free
throws, then scoring on a lay-in
on a nice pass from Brett Barber
to take a 7-5 lead. However, the
Vikings scored the next eight
points to take a 13-7 lead after
one.
Jodie Carlson hit a jumper to
open the second quarter and, af
ter a Umatilla basket, Meghan
Bailey hit a three-pointer to cut
the lead to 15-12. Kelsey Greenup
hit two free throws to cut the lead
to 16-14. then Stefanie Hanson hit
one o f two free throw s and
Greenup hit a short jumper to cut
the lead to 18-17. That was as
close as they would get though,
as the Vikings went on a 9-0 run
before Tylynn Smith scored off a
pass from Barber. Rietmann
made one of two free throws to
cut the lead to 27-20. Bailey made
one of two free throws, but the
Vikings took a 32-21 lead into the
locker room.
The Mustangs came out hot
to open the third as Kempas and
Bailey each hit three-pointers and
Rietmann hit a rebound basket to
cut the lead to 32-29. The Vikings
then went on another run. taking

Rust scored four points in the
third as the Mustangs took a 34-
14 lead into the fourth. Hanson
scored six points and Chantea
Macaulay scored four points as
they coasted to the 44-22 win.
Hanson finished with 13
points, four steals and five re
bounds, with Britt adding 11 points
and grabbing five rebounds. Rust
added seven points, six rebounds
and three steals, Bailey had five
points and four steals. Macaulay
had five rebounds. Blair Keithley,
four rebounds, and Mitchell had
two assists.
