A 45-11 advantage in the sec­
ond and third quarters helped the
sixth-ranked Heppner Mustangs
to an 81-45 win over the visiting
Pilot Rock Rockets on Friday, Jan.
25. The Mustangs completed the
first half o f the Columbia Basin
Conference with a 7 and 0 record
and improved their overall record
to 14 and 1.

Norton and Chuy Elguezabal each
scored six points and Michael
McCabe hit a three-pointer as the
Mustangs took a 23-16 lead after
one. McCabe scored nine points,
Matheny, five, and Norton, four,
as the Mustangs extended their
lead to 46-25 at halftime.
McCabe and Matheny each
had six points and Norton, four,
in the third as the Mustangs blew
the game open and put it away,
taking a 68-27 lead going into the
fourth. Josh Winters scored four
points and Kevin Drake hit a
three-pointer as the Mustangs
coasted to the 81 -45 win.
McCabe led four Mustangs
in double figures with 18 points,
pulled down seven rebounds and
had six steals. Matheny added 17
points on six of 11 shooting, and
Norton had 14 points on six of
seven shooting, with 11 rebounds
and three steals. Elguezabal hit all
five of his shots for 10 points,
grabbed five rebounds, three
steals and dished out two assists.
Brian Rust had seven points, two
a ssists and two steals. Brad
Adams grabbed 14 rebounds.

Varsity boys outlast Culver

It wasn’t pretty, but any win
on the road in the CBC is a good
one as the Heppner Mustang var­
sity boys made an early lead stand
up to beat the Culver Bulldogs,
60-49, in Culver on Saturday, Jan.
26. The sixth-ranked Mustangs
remain in first place and undefeat­
ed in the Columbia Basin Confer­
ence at 8 and 0 and ran their over­
all record to 15 and 1.

hosting Sherman County on Sat­
urday, Feb. 2.
David Norton broke an early
2-2 tie by converting a three-point
play off an offensive rebound, but
the Bulldogs cut it to one before
the M ustangs went on a run.
Stefan Matheny hit a three-point­
er. Norton hit a short jum per,
Michael McCabe had a steal and
lay-in and Chuy Elguezabal hit a
running jumper to give the Mus­
tangs a 14-4 lead after one.
The Mustangs kept their 10-
to -12 point lead through most of
the second as M cCabe hit a
baseline jumper. Matheny hit two
free throws, Norton hit a free
throws and a jumper and McCabe
hit a jumper, but the Bulldogs
scored the last six points o f the
quarter to get within 23-19 at half­
time.
Norton hit a jumper to open
the third and Matheny hit two
three-pointers, but the Bulldogs
wouldn't back down, getting with­
in 31 -27. Norton hit a turnaround
jumper and Brian Rust hit a free
throw, but the Bulldogs again nar­
row ed the gap to 34-31.
Elguezabal hit a three-pointer,
McCabe hit a rebound basket and
Elguezabal fed Matheny for a lay-
in on the fast break to make it 4 1 -
31. After four straight points by
the Bulldogs, McCabe scored on
a lay-in to end the third with the
Mustangs leading 43-35.
Brad Adams scored to open
the fourth, but the Bulldogs came
back to get within 45-42. Norton
scored on a lay-in, but Culver
scored again to make it 47-44.
McCabe fed Norton for a lay-in,
then drove the baseline for a lay-
in to make it 51 -44 The Bulldogs
came right back with a three-
pointer. Adams scored off a pass
from Matheny. but a Bulldog bas­
ket cut the lead to 53-49. The
Bulldogs were then forced to foul
and Matheny made them pay for
it by hitting five o f six free throws,
then fed Elguezabal for a fast
break lay-in to close out the scor­
ing with the Mustangs escaping
with a 60-49 win.
Matheny led three Mustangs
in double figures with 19 points,
hitting eight of 12 free throws, and
had three assists and two steals.
Norton added 16 points by hitting
seven o f nine shots and pulled
down six rebounds. McCabe add­
ed 12 points, seven rebounds, five
offensive, four assists and two
steals. Rust pulled down seven
rebounds, five offensive, had two
assists and two steals. Adams
added five points, four rebounds,
three assists and three steals.
The Mustangs made 12 of 23
free throws with the Bulldogs
making one of four for the game.

Former resident to
carry Olympic
torch
Kathleen McElligott, Salt
Lake City, formerly o f lone, has
been selected to carry the
Olympic Torch during a leg of the
journey on Antelope Island near
Salt Lake on February 6.
McElligott, the daughter
o f Don and Eunice McElligott o f
lone, is a pediatrician. According
to her father, she sent her parents
tickets so that they could watch
her run.

After losing their second key
starter of the season, the Heppner
Mustang varsity girls made the
long trip to Culver and gutted out
a 46-37 win over the Bulldogs on
Saturday, Jan. 26. The second-
place Mustangs improved to 6 and
2 in the CBC and 10 and 6 over­
all, with important games this
coming weekend at Umatilla on
Friday, Feb. 1, and at home
against Sherman County on Sat­
urday, Feb. 2.
The Mustangs learned before
the game that Lacey Matteson,
hurt the night before against Pilot
Rock, w ould jo in S helley
Rietmann on the injured list with
a severe knee injury.
The Mustangs and Bulldogs
played even through the first quar­
ter as Shanna Rietmann scored
on a rebound basket and hit two
free throws. Brett Barber made
one of two free throws to tie it a
5-5. Tylynn Smith made a lay-in
on a pass from B arber and
Kelsey G reenup m ade a free
throw and hit a short jumper.
Meghan Bailey scored off a re­
bound to make it 12-5, but the
Bulldogs cut it to 12-8 after one.
Barber hit a turnaround jump­
er off a pass from Jesse Kempas
to open the second and Rietmann
scored on a rebound basket, plus
made two free throws to make it
18-10. After a Bulldog three-point
play, Barber hit a jumper. After
another Bulldog basket, Rietmann
hit two free throws, Barber made
one and Greenup made three o f
four as the Mustang took a 26-15
halftime lead.
The Mustangs hit 12 of 16
free throws in the first half.
The Bulldogs scored four
straight to open the third before
Smith scored off a drive to make
it 28-19. Barber scored twice off
o f steals but the Bulldogs nar­
rowed the gap to 32-27 before
Rietmann hit a free throw, then
scored off a steal to end the third,
extending the lead to 35-27.
Rietmann scored on a re­
bound basket to open the fourth,
then fed Jodie Carlson for a lay-
in. Kempas fed Smith for anoth­
er lay-in to m ake it 41-29.
Meghan Bailey hit a long jumper,
Rietmann scored and Madison
Bailey made one o f two free
throws to make it 46-32 and se­
cure the win.
Rietmann led the Mustangs
with 17 points, hitting seven of
nine free throws and pulled down
nine rebounds. Barber finished
with 10 points, five rebounds and
tw o ste a ls, w ith Sm ith and
Greenup each adding six points.
Carlson had six rebounds and
Bailey, five. Kempas had two as­
sists and two steals.

The Heppner Mustang girls
played the first place and top-
ranked Pilot Rock Rockets tough
for three q u arters, but were
outscored 17-6 in the fourth quar­
ter, losing by a final score o f 58-
36 on Friday, Jan. 25, in Heppner.
The Mustangs suffered a double
loss as leading scorer Lacey
Matteson went down early in the
fourth quarter with a knee injury
and is probably out for the remain­
der o f the season.
Despite the loss, the Mus­
tangs remain in second place in
the Columbia Basin Conference
with a 5 and 2 record, and are 9
and 6 overall.
Meghan Bailey hit a three-
pointer and scored five points in
the first quarter, but the Mustangs
trailed 15-9 after one. Matteson
scored six points in the second as
the Rockets extended their lead
to 28-18 at halftime.
Matteson, Brett Barber and
Jodie Carlson each scored four
points in the third as the Mustangs
stayed with the Rockets, trailing
41-30 going into the fourth, but
they couldn’t keep up in the last
quarter.
Matteson led the Mustangs
with 14 points, five rebounds and
four steals, with Carlson adding
10 points and three rebounds.
B arber added six points and
Bailey grabbed seven rebounds.

women conquered the Umatilla
Vikings, 35-31, on Tuesday, Jan.
22. The Lady Cardinals trailed the
Vikings by one point at the end of
the first quarter, and three points
by the half. A big third quarter
lifted them above Umatilla to lead
by seven points.

outstanding game, leading the
C ardinals with 12 points and
bringing down eight rebounds.
Meghan M. McCabe scored five
points and seized five Viking
possessions. Eva C hitty also
added five points to the lone
squad scoreboard. Emily Key

defeated Wheeler on Saturday,
Jan. 26. The Cardinals outscored
the Falcons, 42-34.
Amellia Peck led the lone
squad w ith 11 p o in ts, eight
rebounds, three steals and one
assist. Kristina Powell stepped up
to the challenge by canning 10
points. Powell also lead the team
on the boards with 11 rebounds,
blocked three shot attempts, led
the team larceny with eight steals
and led in assists. Salli McElligott
scored eight points, captured two
reb o u n d s, four ste a ls and
delivered two assists. Diana
McElligott scored seven points,
seized three rebounds, six steals
and handed out one a ssist.
Barbara Holland scored four
points, grabbed two rebounds and
delivered one assist. Caitlin Orem
did a nice job of coming off the
bench to scored tw o points,
capture three rebounds and one
steal.

weekend, losing a close game to
the Pilot Rock Rockets, 40-36, in
Heppner on Friday, Jan. 25, and
dominating the Culver Bulldogs,
51 -18, in Culver on Saturday, Jan.
26, to run their record to 10 and 3
on the year. The Mustangs travel
to Umatilla on Friday, Feb. 1, and
host Sherman County on Satur­
day, Feb. 2.
The Mustangs trailed by one
at 9-8 after one against Pilot
Rock, but the Rockets extended
the lead to 19-10 at halftime. The
Mustangs rallied in the third, get­
ting to within 25-24, on two Mad­
ison B ailey free throw s and
trailed, 28-26, as Tiffany Piper
scored at the end o f the quarter.
Brooke Rust and Chelsea Britt
scored five points each in the
quarter. The M ustangs stayed
with the Rockets, getting four
points each from Rust and Britt,
but they could never catch up as
the Rockets held on for the win.
Britt finished with 11 points,
eight rebounds and three steals,
with Rust scoring 11 points, grab­
bing seven rebounds and four
steals. Bailey had six points and
eight steals. Piper scored six
points, Stefanie Hanson had sev­
en rebounds and Marcy Miller
had three steals.

lead after one in Culver and got
10 points from Rust in the second
quarter to extend their lead to 27-
10 at halftime. The Mustangs ex­
tended their lead to 33-13 after
three, then got four points each
from S tefanie H anson and
Chantea Macaulay, plus a three-
pointer from Nikki Sisk, as they
coasted to the win.
Rust led the Mustangs with
12 points, two steals and two as­
sists, with Britt adding nine points
and seven rebounds. Hanson fin­
ished with eight points, nine re­
bounds and two steals. Macaulay
had seven points. Piper had five
points and six rebounds, and
Linsey Mitchell had four steals.

Heppner Mustang JV boys to
two wins over the weekend. The
Mustangs beat the Pilot Rock
Rockets at home, 61 -41, on Fri­
day, Jan. 25, and traveled to Cul­
ver on Saturday, Jan. 26, to beat
the Bulldogs, 63-41. The wins
improved the Mustangs’ record
to 11 and 1 on the year with a
game at Umatilla and a home
game against Sherman County
this weekend.
The Mustangs took a 14-11
lead after one against the Rock­
ets, getting six points from Bran­
don Seitz and four from Conor
Kilkenny. Josh Winters scored
five points in the second quarter
to help the M ustangs extend
their lead to 31 -15 at halftime.
Brian Smith had five points
and Justin Botefuhr, four, in the
third quarter, but the Rockets nar­
rowed the gap to 40-29 going into
the fourth. Kyler Lovgren had
eight points and Kilkenny, six, in
the fourth as the Mustangs pulled
away for the win.
Kilkenny led four Mustangs
in double figures with 12 points,
with Seitz adding 11, and Smith
and Lovgren each scoring 10
points.
