Mustangs hang on
to beat Tigers
lone girls’ varsity easily
beats Cascade Locks

lone Cardinal girls’ varsity
squad easily defeated Cascade
Locks, 63-20, on Jan. 18.
Natalie McElligott was hot
from the three-point territory,
hitting three of five attempts and
leading the Cardinals with 23
points. McElligott also contrib­
uted eight rebounds, six steals
and five assists to her team's cre­
dentials. Amellia Peck continues
to be a consistent factor to the
Lady Cardinals, “always giving
150 percent and never giving
up.” Peck scored 19 points, led
the team on the boards with 12
rebounds, grabbed three steals
and delivered five assists.

six points, apprehended two re­
bounds and three steals. Salli
The Heppner Mustang boys
improved to 6-0 in the CBC by
hanging on in the third quarter,
then making enough plays in the
fourth to take a hard-fought 65-
55 win over the Stanfield Tigers
in Stanfield on Saturday, Jan. 19.
Next up on the schedule for the
sixth-ranked Mustangs, who im­
proved to 13-1 on the year, will
be a home game against Pilot
Rock on Friday, Jan, 25, and a
road game at Culver on Saturday,
Jan. 26
David Norton scored inside
and Michael McCabe hit a three-
pointer to get the Mustangs out to
a 5-0 lead. Stefan Matheny then
scored off a pass from McCabe,
Brad Adams hit a jumper, then
fed McCabe for a fast break lay-
m to make it 11-4. The Tigers got
to within 11-9, but Matheny hit
two three-pointers to end the first
with the Mustangs up, 17-9.
McCabe scored off a rebound
and a lay-tn to open the second,
then scored off a pass from Chuy
Elguezabal and a baseline drive
and lay-in to make it 25-12. The
Tigers got to within 25-19, but
Norton hit a jumper, Elguezabal
drove the lane for a lay-in, Nor­
ton hit another short jumper and
Matheny hit another three-
pointer to make it 34-24. Elguez­
abal hit a short jumper to end the
first half with the Mustcngs lead­
ing 36-26.
Norton hit three of four free
throws and a short jumper as the
Mustangs held a 41-32 led mid­
way through the third, but the
Tigers went on an 8-0 run to get
within 41-40. Brian Rust hit a
rebound basket and Norton hit a
free throw to end the third with
the Mustangs clinging to a 44-40
lead.
Matheny drove the lane for a
lay-in, but a three point play by
the Tigers got them to within 46-
45. That was as close as they got.
Matheny had another drive to the
basket for a lay-m and a running
jumper. Elguezabal got a re­
bound basket to make it 53-46.
Norton hit a turnaround jumper
and Elguezabal got a steal and
lay-in to make it 57-48. Matheny
also got a steal and a lay-in, mak­
ing the score 59-50, but the Ti­
gers came right back to score.
Adams scored off a rebound with
1:15 left, then McCabe hit two
free throws and Norton, one, to
put the game away.
Matheny hit eight of 15
shots, including three of three
from three-point range, finishing
with 20 points, plus he had two
steals. Norton scored 15 points
and grabbed eight rebounds.
McCabe scored 13 points,
grabbed seven rebounds and had
two steals. Elguezabal went four
for four from the field for eight
points, had seven steals and
dished out two assists. Adams
had seven rebounds.

Mustang JV boys split

After suffering their first loss
in two years on Friday, Jan. 18,
to the Weston-McEwen Tiger-
scots, 40-39, the Mustangs JV
boys rebounded with a 42-33 win
at Stanfield on Saturday, Jan. 19,
to up their record to 9-1 on the
year. The Mustangs will host Pi­
lot Rock on Friday, Jan. 25, be­
fore traveling to Culver on Sat­
urday, Jan. 26.
Josh Winters hit a three-
pointer in the first quarter, but
the Mustangs found themselves
down 11-7 after one. Donald Ad­
ams scored six points and Brian
Smith, four, as the Mustangs
came back to tie it up at 19-19 at
halftime.
Justin Botefuhr had four
points in the third, but the Tiger-
scots took a 33-31 lead into the
fourth. Conor Kilkenny scored to
tie it and Adams scored on a lay-
in to put the Mustangs up 35-33.
Winters had a steal and lay-in to
put the Mustangs up 37-36 with
1:40 left. Brandon Seitz scored
off a nice pass from Adams to
make it 39-36 with 1:10 left. The
Tigerscots got to within one with
15 seconds left and took the lead
with :02.4 left to steal the win.
Winters led the Mustangs
with 11 points, Adams had eight
and Botefuhr and Smith each had
six points.
The Mustangs hurt them­
selves by hitting only four of 16
free throws.

lead at halftime.
Kyler Lovgren had six third
quarter points to help the Mus­
tangs to a 32-24 lead going into
the fourth. The Tigers got to
within two points, but Adams hit
three of four free throws and
Winters had three points down
the stretch as the Mustangs
pulled away for the 42-33 win.
Lovgren led the Mustangs
with 11 points, with Smith add­
ing six and Adams and Winters
adding five each. Kilkenny, Seitz
and Doug Orwick each added
four points.

lone’s junior varsity women
narrowly defeated the South
Wasco County Redsides on Sat­
urday, Jan. 19, 25-21. lone out-
scored the Redsides in the first
three quarters but SWC had a big
fourth quarter to nearly tie the
Cardinals.
Barbara Holland was the
leading point producer with eight
points. Sara Peck added four
points, with Emily Key, Megan
E. McCabe and Alyssa Rietmann
each contributing three points.
Missy Baker and Kim Morris
each scored two points for the
Cardinals. Sara Peck, Alyssa
Rietmann and Megan E. McCabe
apprehended seven rebounds
each Missy Baker and Barbara
Holland each grabbed five re­
bounds. Emily Key, Macarena
Esposito and Sara Peck each
delivered one assist. Emily Key
led the team larceny with five

On Jan. 11. the Picture Per­
fect 4-H Photography Club met
Members held the meeting in the
art room at lone Elementary
School Members saw how pic­
tures are developed in a dark
room They even got to try de­
veloping them.
The club added new mem­
bers Ashley and Lynzee Sjurset.

lone Cardinal JV boys de­
feated Dufur, 38-31, on Saturday,
Jan. 12.
With lone trailing the Rang­
ers 5-8. Curtis Thompson swiped
a Ranger possession with 10 sec­
onds left in the first quarter,
passed the ball to Mike Radie
who canned a basket to close the
lead to one point at the end of the
first quarter, 7-8. lone men let up
their defenses in the second quar­
ter allowing the Rangers to lead
14-19 at the half.
Early in the third quarter,
Nick Christman grabbed an of­
fensive rebound, put it back up
for two points and drew a foul,
making one point at the free
throw line to close the lead to
17-19.
Mike Radie and Nick
Christman led the Cardinal men
with seven points each. Radie
also pulled down four rebounds
and seized three Ranger posses­
sions. Christman apprehended
five rebounds, delivered one as­
sist and accumulated two steals.
Jeff Hunt scored five points,
brought down six rebounds,
handed off one assist and swiped
one Dufur possession. Tyler
Raible scored four points, cap­
tured five rebounds and one steal.
Curtis Thompson added four
points, one rebound and two
steals to his team's effort.
Cayle Krebs scored two
points, led the team with seven
rebounds, handed out two assists
and robbed three Ranger posses­
sions. Arthur Ekstrom scored two
points in the second quarter. Also
aiding the Cardinal larceny were
Til Tullis. Tim Doherty and
Cody Bergstrom with one steal

tight game, lone succumbed to
South Wasco County. 40-41. The
Cardinals were ahead. 40-39,
with six seconds remaining in the
game, when the Redsides scored
two points to take the lead lone
had possession of the ball with
one second remaining but was
unable to get Nick Christman's
shot to fall.
Christman led the team with
15 points, four rebounds, two
assists and two steals. Tyler
Raible dumped in nine points,
apprehended five rebounds, one
steal and handed out two assists.
Jeff Hunt scored six points, cap­
tured seven rebounds, one steal
and one assist. Mike Radie hit a
three-point bucket in the first
quarter, grabbed two rebounds,
two steals and passed out three
assists.
Cody Bergstrom also canned
a three-point shot in the second
quarter, grabbed two rebounds
and two steals. Cayle Krebs do­
nated two points, led the team on
the boards with eight rebounds,
delivered two assists and pilfered

The Heppner Mustang JV
girls had two convincing wins
over the weekend, beating the
Weston-McEwen T lgerscots, 47-
29. on Friday, Jan. 18. in Hepp­
ner, and the Stanfield Tigers, 37-
18, in Stanfield on Saturday, Jan.
19. The wins improved their re­
cord to 9-2 on the year. The Mus­
tangs will host Pilot Rock on Fri­
day, Jan. 25 and will travel to
Culver on Saturday. Jan. 26. for
their next games.
Madison Bailey hit a three-
pointer in the first quarter to help
the Mustangs to a 7-7 tie at the
end of one against the Tigerscots.
Brooke Rust scored six points
and Nikki Sisk hit a three-pointer
in the second quarter as the Mus­
tangs took a 20-13 lead at half-
time.
Chelsea Britt scored four
points in the third as the Mus­
tangs kept up the pressure and
increased the lead to 30-18 after
three. Stefanie Hanson had five
fourth quarter points. Britt hit
three of four free throws and
Blair Keithley had three points as
the Mustangs extended their lead
and coasted to the win.
Hanson had nine points and
nine rebounds, with Britt scoring
nine points and grabbing five
rebounds. Rust had six points and
Bailey had five points and five
rebounds.

The Mustangs jumped out to
a 7-0 lead at Stanfield, only to
have the Tigers come back and
take an 8-7 lead midway through
the second. The Mustangs came
back to take a 15-9 lead at half­
time with the help of four points
from Bailey. Hanson had four
points and Britt, three points in
the third as the Mustangs in­
creased their lead to 28-18 after
three. Rust went four for four
from the line and Miller chipped
in four points as the Mustangs
blanked the Tigers in the fourth,
increasing their lead to 37-18.
In a very balanced scoring
effort, Bailey had six points, four
steals and three rebounds; Rust
had six points and six rebounds;
Hanson had six points and four
steals; and Miller also had six
points. Britt had five points and
Keithley had four points and four
rebounds.

The local competition for the
30th Annual Elks Hoop Shoot,
the national free throw shooting
contest for youth ages eight
through 13. will be held at the
Heppner High School gym on
Sunday. Jan. 27. at 5:30 p.m.
Over three million youth
from throughout the country en­
tered last year’s competition for
boys and girls in age categories
eight-nine; 10-11; and 12-13.
Each contestant has 25 shots at
the hoop. The boy and girl in
each age group with the best
scores advance through four tiers
of competition to qualify for the
national finals.
Local winners w ill compete
against other contestants in the
district event at Sandstone Mid­
dle School in Hermiston on Sat­
urday. Feb. 2.
