Mustangs overcome slow
start to beat Eagles

The Heppner Mustang var
sity boys overcame a sluggish
start, outscoring Wahtonka, 43-
18, in the second and third quar
ters, to beat the Eagles, 76-44, at
The Dalles on Friday, Jan. 11.
The sixth-ranked Mustangs im-.
proved their Columbia Basin
Conference record to 3-0 and
their overall record to 10-1.
Stefan Matheny hit a three-
pointer in the first quarter as the
Mustangs struggled to an 11 -8
lead. Chuy Elguezabal scored 10
points and David Norton scored
seven in the second as the Mus
tangs took a 34-17 lead into half
time.
The Mustangs kept up the
pressure in the third, extending
their lead to 54-26 with the help
of
Norton’s
six
points,
Matheny’s five, including an
other three-pointer, and Brian
Rust’s five points, including a
three-pointer. Rust added nine
points and Michael McCabe, six,
as the Mustangs coasted through
the fourth, taking the 76-44 win.
Norton led five Mustangs in
double figures with 17 points and
eight rebounds. Rust added 16
points and eight rebounds. Elgu
ezabal had 14 points, seven re
bounds and three assists.
Matheny had 12 points and four
assists. McCabe had 10 points,
six rebounds and four assists.
Brad Adams pulled down 14 re
bounds and Kevin Drake had 11
rebounds.

Second half surge carries Mustangs to win over Bulldogs

The sixth-ranked Heppner
Mustang varsity boys needed a
38-21 advantage in the second
half to pull away from the
scrappy Culver Bulldogs and
eventually took the win, 57-39.
on Saturday, Jan. 12. in Heppner
The win improves the Mustangs'
CBC record to 4-0 and their
overall record to 11-1. The Mus
tangs will host Weston-McEwen
on Friday, Jan. 18, and will travel
to Stanfield on Saturday, Jan. 19,
for their next games.
Brian Rust hit a short jumper
and Michael McCabe hit two free
throws to give the Mustangs a 4-
1 lead, but the Bulldogs came
back to take a 5-4 lead. McCabe
hit a free throw to tie it up and
Stefan Matheny hit two free
throws to again tie it at 7-7 after
one quarter
Brad Adams hit a free throw
to open the second quarter and,
after the Bulldogs came back to
tie it again, Matheny hit a three-
pointer to start a run. Chuy Elgu
ezabal scored on a pass from
David Norton who then scored
off a steal by Kevin Drake.
Matheny made a free throw to
make it 16-8 but the Bulldogs
made a run themselves to get
within 16-14. Adams made a free
throw and McCabe scored to
make it 19-14. but back came the
Bulldogs to cut it to 19-18 at
halftime.

throw as the Mustangs took a 34-
24 lead into the fourth quarter.
Norton scored off a drive to
open the fourth. The Bulldogs hit
a three-pointer, then Matheny hit
a short jumper and Norton scored
off a rebound to make it 40-27.

bound basket and McCabe got a
steal and a lay-in but the Bull
dogs cut the lead. to 44-34.
Matheny hit a short jumper off a
drive. Rust hit a free throw and
McCabe had another steal and
lay-in. The Bulldogs got within
50-39, but that was the end of
their scoring as Matheny hit four
of five free throws, Norton hit
one and McCabe scored off a
rebound to end the game
Matheny hit nine of 13 free
throws and finished with 18
points, three steals and three re
bounds. Norton hit six of 11
shots for 13 points and had five
rebounds and two steals. McCabe
had 13 points, four rebounds and
two steals; Adams had five re
bounds and Elguezabal had three
assists.

Heppner JV girls win two

The Heppner Mustang JV
girls got two big wins last week
end. traveling to The Dalles and
beating the Wahtonka Eagles
handily, 47-11, on Friday, Jan.
11, and beating the Culver Bull
dogs, 39-21. on Saturday, Jan.
12, in Heppner. Their record is
now 7-2 on the year. The Mus
tangs will play Weston-McEwen
at home on Friday, Jan. 18, and
travel to Stanfield on Saturday,
Jan. 19.
Linsey Mitchell scored four
first-quarter points to help the
Mustangs to an 8-3 lead after one
in Wahtonka. Stefanie Hanson
had five points in the second
quarter as the Mustangs extended
their lead to 18-7. Mitchell added
eight points in the third to make
it 31-9 going into the fourth.
Marcy Miller had six points in
the fourth as the Mustangs left no
doubt as to the outcome.
Mitchell led the Mustangs
with 15 points and 10 rebounds,
with Madison Bailey adding nine
points, eight steals, four assists
and three rebounds. Miller had
six points and six rebounds;
Chelsea Britt had four rebounds
and three steals; and Tiffany
Piper had four steals.

points each in the second as they
extended their lead to 20-9 at

the Mustangs didn’t let up, taking
the 39-21 win.
Britt finished with 13 points,
nine rebounds and four steals,
with Rust adding 10 points, five
rebounds, three assists and three
steals. Hanson had six points,

three steals. Macauley had six
rebounds, Miller grabbed four

A 19-5 lead after one helped
carry the Heppner Mustang var
sity girls to a 57-31 win over the
visiting Culver Bulldogs on Sat
urday, Jan. 12. The win improves
the Mustangs’ Columbia Basin
Conference record to 3-1 and
their overall record to 7-5. The
Mustangs host Weston-McEwen
on Friday, Jan. 18, and travel to
Stanfield on Saturday, Jan. 19,
for their next games.
The Mustangs jumped out to
a 7-1 lead, getting lay-ms from
Shanna Rietmann, Brett Barber
and Lacey Matteson, plus a free
throw from Meghan Bailey
Tylynn Smith scored on a pass
from Matteson. Rietmann scored,
then Matteson scored off a pass
from Barber. Matteson also hit a
short jumper and scored off a
rebound to make it 17-3. Matte
son scored to end the first quarter
then made a lay-in to open the
second. Kelsey Greenup hit a
short jumper off a drive to make
it 23-5.
Barber hit a running jumper
and Bailey hit a short jumper to
make it 27-7, but the Bulldogs
went on an 11-0 run before
Greenup hit a baseline jumper to
end the first half with the Mus
tangs leading 29-18.
The Bulldogs scored to open
the third quarter to narrow the
gap to 29-20, but that was as
close as they would get Barber
hit a jumper, then fed Matteson
for a lay-in. Bailey hit a short
jumper. Barber scored off a re
bound, Jesse Kempas hit a three-
pointer and Barber hit a lay-in to
end the third quarter with the
Mustangs leading 42-20.
Matteson opened the fourth
scoring eight straight points be
fore the Bulldogs hit a three-
pointer to make it 50-23. Kempas

cooking classes
Central Market in Heppner
will offer monthly cooking
classes starting in February in the
market deli department. Mike
and Kim Armato will demon
strate cooking techniques, ideas
and recipes to class participants.
The Armatos will offer their
first class on antipastos, fried
olives and meat and cheese plat
ters. Appropriate wine selection
and sampling will be a part of the
class also.
The class will be held on
Thursday, Feb. 28, from 7-9 p.m.
