Mustangs rally beat Huskies
lone varsity men handed double overtime loss

lone Cardinal varsity men were
handed a tough loss on Saturday.
Jan. 5, in double overtime against
Condon.
The Cardinals had a 12-0 lead
before Condon finally put their team
on the board in the first quarter,
lone's varsity squad displayed
exemplary teamwork in the first
quarter. Billy Gates canned two
attempts from the three-pomt area
while Brad Bumght, Adam Neiffer
and Adam McCabe all donated to
the Cardinal score to lead the Blue
Devils, 21 -11 at the end o f the first
quarter.
lone continued to play tough
defensively but were able to score
only nine points in the second quarter
while Condon dumped in 16 points
to close the lead within three points
at the half.
The Cardinal men let down a little
in the third quarter, creating several
turnovers. The Blue Devils continued
to apply the heat and by the end of
the quarter, Condon had a 37-40
lead on lone. The Cardinals
outscored Condon in the fourth
quarter to tie the game at 53 to take
the game into overtime.
Adam Neiffer and Brad Bumght
each donated two points at the free-
throw line, along with a basket by
Adam McCabe to tie the game at
59, forcing an additional overtime
situation. The game was tied at 63
points, when Brad Burright drew
a foul and sank one o f one attempt
at the line to have a one point lead.
Condon hit three attempts at the foul
line and had a two point lead, 64-66.
With 10 seconds on the clock, Karl
Morgan scored a basket to tie the
score at 66 but Condon launched
a missile at the buzzer to claim the
victory, defeating lone 66-68.
It didn't take long for the Heppner
Mustang varsity girls to get over their
disappointing loss to Umatilla the
night before as they rallied from a
12-6 deficit after the first quarter
to beat the Sherman C ounty Huskies,
50-38, in Moro, on Saturday, Jan.
5.
A 16-4 run in the second quarter
helped give the Mustangs their first
win at Sherman County in a number
o f years, evening their Columbia
Basin Conference record at 1-1 and
their overall record at 5-5. The
Mustangs will travel to Wahtonka
on Friday, Jan. 11, and come home
to play Culver on Saturday, Jan. 12,
in their next games.
Two free throws by Lacey
Matteson were all the M ustangs
could muster as they fell behind 8-2
midway through the first quarter.
A lay-in by Kelsey Greenup on a
nice pass from Meghan Bailey and
a short jum per from Jodie Carlson
were all the offense the Mustangs
could get through one quarter.
Tylynn Smith got a steal and lay-
in and Matteson hit two more free
throws to cut the lead to 12-10 in
the second. A three point play by
Shanna Rietmann and free throw
from Smith tied it at the 5:00 minute
mark. Rietmann scored on a nice
pass from Brett Barber to give the
Mustangs their first lead o f the game
and Barber scored the last five points
o f the quarter to increase the lead
to 22-16 at the half.
The Huskies came out and scored
four quick points to open the third,
but Matteson hit a short jum per to
make it 24-20 Bailey hit two free
throws and M atteson hit a jum per
to make it 28-22. Smith hit a short
jum per o ff a pass from Matteson
and hit one of two free throws while
Barber scored o ff a drive to make
it 33-26. Matteson got a steal and
lay-in, then fed Stefame Hanson for
a basket at the end o f the third to
make it 37-30.
Greenup hit two free throws and.
after a Husky basket, Rietmann hit
one o f two and Smith hit three o f
four to make it 43-32. The Huskies
came back to cut it to 44-36. The
Mustangs put the Huskies away as
Matteson hit Bailey on a long pass
for a lay-in, then scored on a lay-in
to make it 48-36. Bailey scored on
a nice pass from Rietmann to end
the game, 50-38.
Matteson led the Mustangs with
13 points, pulled down five
rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Smith came off the bench and scored
nine points, and grabbed 11
rebounds, seven o f them offensive.
Barber had seven points, four
rebounds and an assist. Rietmann
had seven points and an assist. Bailey
had six points, 10 rebounds and an
assist.

Lady Cardinals burned

The lone Lady Cardinals varsity
squad was burned by Condon, losing
to the Blue Devils, 36-67, on
Saturday, Jan. 5.
lone trailed 19-40 at the end ot
the quarter but dumped in 17 points
in the fourth quarter to close the lead,
lone ladies were weak on the boards,
but led the Devils with blocked shots
and tied with 18 steals.
Natalie McElligott scored nine
points, blocked one shot, swiped
five Condon possessions and
delivered four assists. Cyndi 1 Icagy
scored six points, apprehended one

one assist. Kristina Powell also
donated six points, captured four
rebounds, blocked one shot attempt,
led her team with six steals and
delivered two assists. Diana

Amellia Peck contributed four
points, led the team with nine
rebounds, seized one steal and
handed out one assist. Salli
McElligott canned one basket from
three-pomt range to add three points
to her team score. Barbara Holland
added two points, one rebound and
one blocked shot to the Cardinal
arsenal.

Brad Bumght scored a game time
high o f 35 points, delivered five
assists, led the team with 28
rebounds, blocked two shot attempts
and swiped one Devil possession
Adam M cCabe added 10 points,
captured five rebounds, four steals
and delivered two assists. Billy Gates
hit three attempts from the three-
pomt range for a total o f nine points.
Adam Neiffer scored eight points,
handed out one assist, and grabbed
nine rebounds and four steals. Karl
Morgan added four points and two
rebounds to the team effort. Ashley
Roberts aided the lone squad with
four assists, six rebounds and three
steals.

lone varsity women were handed
a 25-49 loss on Saturday, Dec. 29
against Pilot Rock. The Rockets
came out strong in the game to
outscore lone in the first three
quarters. lone dumped in 10 points
and held Pilot Rock to six points
in the fourth quarter but it was not
enough to catch the Rockets.
Amellia Peck led the Cardinal
women with six points, six rebounds,
four steals and one assist. Diana
M cElligott also contributed six
points, brought down two rebounds
and absconded four steals. Natalie
McElligott scored four points, seized
one rebound, four steals and
delivered four assists. Salli
McElligott canned a three-point shot,
grabbed two rebounds and distributed
one assist.
Tracy Griffith did an outstanding
job of coming off the bench to donate
two points, two rebounds and one
steal to her team 's effort. Cyndi
Heagy scored two points,
apprehended three rebounds and
one Rocket possession. Kristina
Powell also donated two points, led
the team on the board with eight
rebounds, blocked two Rocket shot
attempts, grabbed two steals and
delivered one assist. The Cardinal
women fielded 47 percent o f the
rebounds, and had a total of 16 steals
for the game.

Mustang girls drop two at tourney

The Heppner M ustang girls
suffered two hard-fought losses at
the Oregon Trail Classic basketball
tournam ent in Pendleton at the
Convention Center on Dec. 28-29.
and had their pre-season record drop
to 4-4.
The M ustangs lost 55-41 to
Condon Friday and 57-51 to the
fourth-ranked Enterprise Savages
on Saturday.
The Columbia Basin Conference
season began for the Mustangs with
a home game against Umatilla on
Friday, Jan. 4, and an away game
against Sherman County on Saturday.
Dec. 5.
Condon took a 9-4 lead after one
and 23-12 halftim e lead as the
Mustangs found themselves in foul
trouble. The Mustangs stayed with
the Blue Devils in the third, getting
five points from Brett Barber, a three-
pointer from Lacy M atteson, and
nine points from Shanna Rietmann
in the fourth quarter, but couldn't
close the gap.
Rietmann led the Mustangs with
12 points, four rebounds, two assists
and two steals, with Matteson adding
eight points and three rebounds.
Stefame Hanson had six points and
two steals, with Barber grabbing
five rebounds and getting two steals.
Jodie Carlson and Kelsey Greenup
each grabbed four rebounds and
M eghan Bailey grabbed three.
Nicole Jamieson o f Condon led
all scorers with 29 points, hitting
13 o f 14 free throws.
The M ustangs stayed with
Enterprise in the first quarter, getting
a basket by Barber, three free throws
from Matteson, a free throw from
Bailey, a basket from Hanson and
a steal and lay-in from Nikki Sisk
to end the quarter tied at 10-10.
Matteson put the Mustangs up
12-10 to open the second, but the
Savages came back to take a 19-13
lead. Matteson made three o f four
free throws, but the Savages took
a 21-16 lead into halftime.
Bailey hit ajumper. then a three-
pointer to pull the Mustangs even,
then Barber made a free throw to
put the M ustangs ahead, but the
Savages came back with four straight
before Greenup completed a three
point play to tie it up at 25-25. The
Savages came back w ith 10 straight
points to close out the third quarter
with a 35-25 lead and extended it
to 40-25 to open the fourth.
Bailey scored five straight to get
the Mustangs within 10. Matteson
hit two free throws and Rietmann
scored to make it 44-35. Enterprise
extended the lead to 48-35 before
Bailey scored, then Matteson hit
three o f four free throws to make
it 50-40. The Mustangs got to within
54-47 on three points from Rietmann
and a basket from Matteson. I lanson
scored to make it 56-49 and Barber
scored to get w ithin five, but time
ran out with the Savages hanging
on for the 57-51 win.
Matteson hit 11 o f 15 free throws
and finished with 17 points, pulled
down seven rebounds and had three
steals. Bailey finished with 14 points
and had six rebounds. Greenup led
the Mustangs w ith eight rebounds.
Barber had six rebounds. Hanson
had six rebounds and three steals.
Rietmann had five rebounds and
two assists.
Matteson was named to the All-
Tournament Team along with
Condon's Nicole Jamieson and
Jessica Snyder. Kazzie Daw son of
Enterpnseand Enn PlottsofSantiam.
who was also named Most Valuable
Player.
The Mustangs received some bad
news before the tournament: senior
Shelley Rietmann will be lost for
the season due to a tom ACL
(ligament) in her knee which w ill
require surgery.

Ione JV men lose to Rockets
lone junior varsity men came back
from a 13-30 deficit at the hal f during
their game against Pilot Rock on
Dec. 22 to nearly tie the Rockets
at the end o f the third quarter w uh
a score o f 36-40.
The beginning of the third quarter
started out dry for the Cardinal men
but, with four minutes remaining
in the quarter, the lone team started
to heat up and added 23 points to
the board.
Cayle Krebs had remarkable
defensive play. Krebs made a save
with two minutes left in the third
quarter and then followed with
another save that was passed inside,
beneath the lone bucket to Adam
McCabe, w ho scored to close the
gap 32-34. The Cardinal men had
a difficult time holding onto the ball
in the fourth quarter creating several
turnovers. With 50 seconds
remaining in the game. lone trailed
Pilot Rock. 43-56. when Tim
Doherty launched a three-point shot
to close the game. 46-56.
Nick Christman led the Cardinal
score w ith 12 points, one rebound,
live steals and two assists. Adam
McCabe scored 11 points, grabbed

traveled to Helix on Friday. Jan. 4
The girls varsity team easily defeated
the Grizzlies. 48-33. The Cardinals
leapt out to a 14-0 lead at the first
quarter and by the third quarter had
a 44-19 lead
