Mustangs put Vikings away in second half

boys finally got their running game
going in the second half, outsconng
the Umatilla Vikings, 41 -31, to post
a 65-50 win in their opening game
o f the Columbia Basin conference
season in Heppner on Friday, Jan
4 The win improves the Mustangs'
overall record to 8-1.
The Vikings took a 6-2 lead early
as the Mustangs’ only bucket came
on a Bnan Rust lay-in on a nice pass
from Stefan Matheny. A rebound
basket by Brad Adams made it 6-5,
but a three-pointer by the Vikings
made it a four-point game again.
A David Norton free throw and a
Matheny jum per cut it to one, but
another Viking basket make it 11 -8.
Two driving lay-ins by Matheny gave
the Mustangs their first lead at 12-11
as the first quarter came to an end.
Norton fed McCabe for a lay-in
to open the second quarter, but the
Vikings came back to take a 15-14
lead. Norton's jum per o ff an
inbounds play and Matheny's drive
and lay-in make it 18-15. A basket
by the Vikings got them to within
one, but two long three-pointers by
Matheny and Rust made it 24-17.
The Mustangs took a 24-19 lead into
the locker room.
Matheny opened the third with
a three-pointer and Norton hit a
jumper to make it 29-19. Rust scored
on a nice pass from M cCabe and
drove for a lay-in to make it 33-21.
Chuy Elguezabal scored twice to
make it 37-25, but the Vikings cut
it to 37-29. Elguezabal scored on
a pass from McCabe, then got a steal
and a lay-in. Norton hit a short
jumper as the Mustangs held a 43-33
lead after three.
Matheny opened the fourth quarter
with a three-pointer. The Vikings
responded with a three of their own.
Elguezabal scored, then fed Norton
and M cCabe but the Vikings
wouldn't go away, getting to within
52-44. Matheny hit another three-
pointer that was answered by the
Vikings. McCabe hit back-to-back
baskets to make it 59-47 and a long
jum per to make it 61-49, putting
the gam e out o f reach. McCabe hit
two free throws and Kevin Drake
hit a jum per as the buzzer went off
to make the final margin 65-50.
Matheny hit eight o f 15 shots,
including four of five three-pointers,
to lead the Mustangs with 20 points.
McCabe added 13 points and two
assists. Elguezabal hit five o f eight
shots for 10 points and had two
assists and two steals. Norton had
nine points, 11 rebounds and five
steals. Rust had nine points, five
rebounds and two steals. Adams had
seven rebounds.
Bnan Littrell led the Vikings w ith
20 points and Tony Villanueva added
19 .

Appaloosa Club
elects officers
The Oregon Trail Appaloosa Club
recently held their year-end dinner
2 nd meeting in Hermiston. Members
held an exchange o f tree ornaments
Awards o f silver belt buckles for
the year 2001 were given to Nina
Taylor and Sheldon Marlnee
Taylor has been responsible for
the education o f the club, organizing
the annual potluck and picnic. She
has promoted sales o f articles the
club wants to sell and has helped
with horse shows and concessions.
She has also been responsible for
locations o f meetings.
M arlnee has enthusiastically
organized the annual Poker Ride
and has been regim ental in
encouraging members to participate
in the parades in this area

The Heppner Mustang JV boys
improved to 7-0 on the year, taking
a hard-fought game from the visiting
Umatilla Vikings, 43-38, onFnday,
Jan. 4, and a 60-44 win over the
Sherman County Huskies in Moro
on Saturday, Jan. 5.
The Mustangs took a 13-6 lead
after one against the Vikings, getting
four points from Donald Adams and
three from Conor Kilkenny, but led
just 23-18 at halftime. Josh Winters
hit a three-pointer in the third quarter,
but the Vikings trailedjust 28-26
and got to within 37-36 in the fourth
until Tanner Britt hit a jum per to
make it 39-36.
The Vikings scored to get within
39-38 with 1:15 left, but W inters
fed Kilkenny fo ra lay-in with :36
left and again with :09.4 left to make
it 43-38 and put the game away.
Bnan Haguewood scored five points
in the fourth quarter.
Kilkenny led the Mustangs with
10 points; Adams had eight; and
Brandon Seitz had six points.

The M ustangs raced out to an
18-9 lead after one against Sherman
County, getting six points from
Kilkenny and four each from Adams
and Botefuhr. Kilkenny scored four
more in the second as the Mustangs
took a 29-19 lead into the half.
Adams scored four more in the
third as the Mustangs extended their
lead to43-31. Kilkenny scored seven
points in the fourth as the Mustangs
coasted to the 60-44 win.
Kilkenny again led the Mustangs
w ith 19 points, with Adams adding
10. Winters scored nine and Botefuhr
finished with six points.

Mustang JV girls earn split

The Heppner Mustang girls' JV
team dropped a close game to the
visiting Umatilla Vikings, 43-40.
on Friday, Jan. 4. but came back
strong, routing the Sherman County
Huskies, 50-22. in Moro. on
Saturday, Jan. 5, to improve their
record to 5-2 on the year.
The M ustangs fell behind the
Vikings, 12-8. after one and trailed
18-10. but rallied to within 18-16
at halftime, getting six points from
Chelsea Bntt. Bntt scored five more
points in the third, but the Mustangs
still trailed 26-23 going into the
fourth quarter.
Madison Bailey made one o f two
free throws to tie the game at 37-37
and the Mustangs took a 39-37 lead
as Stcfanie Hanson got a steal and
fed Brooke Rust for a lay-in with
1:48 left. Umatilla tied it up on free
throws with 1:30 left. Hanson made
one o f two free throws to give the
M ustangs a 40-39 lead, but the
Vikings scored the final four points
o f the game to get the win.
Bntt led the Mustangs with 11
points and 14 rebounds, with Hanson
scoring 10 points, grabbing 11
rebounds and dishing out two assists.

County game as Britt scored four
first quarter points to help the
M ustangs to an 11-2 lead Rust
scored seven points in the second
as the Mustangs extended their lead
to 28-7 at halftime and put the game
away in the third, getting five point

for a 37-12 lead.
Hanson led the Mustangs with
11 points and four rebounds, with
Rust adding nine points and two

One more minute and the Heppner
Mustang varsity girls probably would
have caught the visiting Umatilla
Vikings, but the game ended with
the Vikings on top, 51-48, in the
opening game of the Columbia Basin
Conference season on Friday, Jan.
4. The Mustangs trailed by as many
as 17 points late in the third quarter,
but battled back to w ithin two with
seven seconds left, but fell just short.
The Mustangs jum ped out to a
quick 4-0 lead on jum pers by
Meghan Bailey and Jodie Carlson,
but the Vikings came right back to
tie. Brett Barber hit a jumper; the
Vikings cam e back with seven
straight points before Lacey Matteson
hit two free throws. Barber hit a
three-pointer to get the Mustangs
to within 13-11, but the Vikings went
on another run to go up 19-11. Bailey
scored off a rebound; still the Vikings
took a 21-13 lead after one.
Barber hit a rebound basket, but
the Vikings extended the lead to 29-
15 before Shanna Rietmann hit two
free throws and Barber hit another
three-pointer to cut the lead to 31 -20
at halftime.
Starting the third, Bailey hit two
jum pers to cut the lead to 32-24.
The Vikings then ran out to a 42-25
lead before Kelsey Greenup scored
on a rebound to close out the third
quarter.
Barber scored o ff a rebound,
Bailey had a lay-in and Carlson hit
a jumper to open the fourth, cutting
the lead to 42-33. The Vikings
extended it to 45-33, but Carlson
hit another short jum per and
Matteson got a steal and lay-in to
cut it to 45-37. Barber hit two free
throws and Matteson hit a running
jumper to cut the lead to 46-41 with
1:45 left.
Bailey hit one o f two free throws
and Rietmann scored off a rebound
with 40 seconds left to cut the lead
to 48-44. After the Vikings missed
two free throws, Stefanie Hanson
scored on a drive to cut it to 48-46

by Umatilla, Rietmann scored on
a drive to cut the lead to 50-48 with
7.1 seconds left. The Vikings hit
one o f two free throws with 4.5
seconds left, but a final Mustang
shot fell short, ending the game at
51-48.
Barber led the Mufctangs '¡vith
14 points, six rebounds and two
assists, with Bailey adding 11 points
and 13 rebounds, 10 o f them
offensive. Carlson had seven points
and eight rebounds. Matteson had
six points and three steals. Rietmann
had six points. Greenup and Hanson
each had four rebounds.

overall record to 9-1. The Mustangs
will be at Wahtonka on Friday, Jan.
11, and at home against Culver on
Saturday, for their next games.
The Mustangs jum ped out to a
6-0 lead on a basket by Stefan
M atheny and, two by Michael
McCabe. David Norton scored on
passes from Matheny and McCabe,
then Brian Rust scored after a steal
to make it 12-5. The Huskies got
to within 12-10, but Norton hit a
jum per and M cCabe scored on a
nice pass from Chuy Elguezabal to
boost the score. Kevin Drake and
M atheny hit back-to-back three-
pointers and Elguezabal scored off
a pass from Brad Adams to make
it 24-13. Norton then hit a jum per
to m ake it 26-15 after one.
Rust hit two free throws and
M cCabe hit a jum per as the
Mustangs kept up the pressure and
increased the lead to 30-17. Matheny
hit a three-pointer, McCabe scored
o ff a drive and Norton hit a short
jum per to make it 37-19. Norton
hit another jumper. Matheny made
two free throws and McCabe hit a
three-pointer, then scored on a pass
from Norton. A three-pointer by the
Huskies at the buzzer made it 45-24
at the half.

lose to Condon
lone junior varsity men faced the
Condon Blue Devils on Saturday,
Jan. 5.
lone was nearly scoreless in the
first quarter, facing a 2-13 deficit
at the end of the quarter. By halftime,
Condon maintained a 15-point lead.
The C ardinals appeared to be on
the receiving end o f a defeat, when
the lone team held Condon to six
points and dum ped in 15 o f their
own to close the lead to 27-33.
However, C ondon added an
additional 11 points in the fourth
quarter to hand lone a 37-44 loss.
Freshman Nick C hristm an led
the Cardinal brigade with 16 points,
seven rebounds, one assist and one
steal Mike Radie scored nine points,
captured six rebounds, two steals,
delivered two assists and blocked
one Condon attem pt at a basket.
Cayle Krebs played extremely well,
added four points, and led the team
with nine rebounds and seven steals,
while passing o ff one assist and
blocking four shots.
Curtis Thom pson scored two
points, grabbed one rebound, handed
off one assist, and blocked one shot.
Jeff Hunt scored two points and
delivered one assist. Tyler Raible
scored two points, grabbed one
rebound, two steals, blocked one
shot and passed off one assist. Arthur
Ekstrom scored two points, snatched
four rebounds, passed out two assists
and blocked one shot. Also aiding
the Cardinals on the boards were
Til Tulhs with four rebounds and
Tim Doherty and Johnny Collin with
one rebound each. Taylor McElligott
and Cody Bergstrom played tough
defense, each blocked one Devil
attem pt for a basket.
McCabe opened the third with
a lay-in on a baseline drive. Matheny
hit a short jum per o ff a drive.
McCabe hit a three-pointer, Rust
hit a three-pointer and Elguezabal
scored as the Mustangs took a 58-34
lead into the fourth quarter.
Adam s scored o ff a rebound,
McCabe hit a jum per and Adams
hit a lay-in to make it 64-36. Norton
hit a lay-in o ff a pass from
Elguezabal. Adams hit a short
jum per, McCabe hit Norton for a
lay-in and then scored on a lay-in
himself as the Mustangs coasted to
the win.

o ff two assists. Norton also had a
good shooting game, hitting eight
o f 10 for 16 points, pulled down five
rebounds, had three assists and three
steals. Matheny had 13 points, three
assists and three steals. Rust had

13 rebounds and Elguezabal dishdd

How Does it Work?
It is a fun way to raise money for a
benefit.
Each pool team is auctioned off
before the tournament.
Half of all the money raised from the
auction goes to the benefit and the other
half goes to the winning bidders of the
winning teams by paying 50% for 1st
place, 30% 2nd place and 20% for 3rd
place.
1 Person or a group of people can go in
to together to buy a team.
