Obituaries
Bessie Mae Kerlin
longtime Irrigon resident, Bessie
Mae Kerim, 73, died Saturday.
January 5, 2002, at Good Shepherd
M edical Center in Hermiston.
Disposition was by crem ation
with a memorial serv ice to be held
later in Montana.
Mrs. Kerim was bom November
25, 1928, at Antelope. Montana,
to John and M attie Harshbarger.
She was a lifelong and active
member of Eastern Star. She enjoyed
sewing and gardening.
Mrs. Kerlin sold Avon products
for 30 years.
She was preceded in death by
her husband, Duane Otto Kerlin.
Survivors include a daughter,
Gloria Dunn o f Pendleton;
grandchildren, Karen Kriger and
Teny Dunn; two great-grandchildren;
five brothers and nine sisters.
Bums M ortuary o f Hermiston
was in charge o f arrangements.
Dee Gantenbein
Former Boardman resident Dee
Gantenbein, 53, o f Portland, died
Wednesday. December 26. 2001.
at Portland.
A memorial service will be held
at the Good Shepherd Lutheran
Church in Boardman on Saturday.
January 19, 2002, at 11 a m. A
service was held earlier in Portland.
Private burial was at Rose City
Cemetery in Portland. Disposition
was by cremation.
Mrs. Gantenbein was bom August
23. 1948, at Portland. She graduated
from high school at Boardman in
1967. She had been a mem ber o f
Job's Daughters in her youth.
She was a dairy owner/operator
at Hillview Dairy in Boardman. and
a special order clerk for nearly six
years at Meier and I rank Furniture
Special Orders in Portland
She was involved in the PTA.
Bluebirds. C am pf ire Girls and 4-11
when her children were young.
She had been a resident o f the
Portland area since 1994 and was
a resident o f Boardman from 1967-
1994.
Survivors include daughters. Amy
Verley and Kristi E. Sams, both of
Boardman; her fiancee. Jim Tedder
o f Portland; father, Dean W ear o f
M cM innville; sisters, Karrol C
Britton o f Maui, Hawaii, and Mary
M. Sauter of Vancouver. Washing­
ton; and a brother, Larry F. Wear
o f Vancouver.
Memorial contributions may be
made to the American Cancer Society
of Oregon Chapter, 0330 SW Curry.

Meeting set on
school design
Local girl attends national 4-H
Twenty-five Oregon youth have
returned from a trip across the
country to take part in a unique 4-H
growth experience. 1 he 4-H members
comprised Oregon's delegation to
the 79th National 4-H Congress in
Atlanta, Ga.. w here they joined 1,200
teens from all over the nation tor
four days.
Shelby Krebs, a 2001 graduate
from lone 1 hgh School and currently
a freshman at New M exico State
University, was among these teens.
"Celebrate the Possibilities" was
the theme o f this year’s congress,
said Mary Arnold, Oregon State
University Extension 4-H Youth
specialist and one o f the chaperons
for the delegation.
While at congress, the delegates
attended cultural Workshops, heard
inspirational speakers and enjoyed
historical tours o f Atlanta, including
the Martin Luther King Center for
Non-Violent Social Change. The
delegates also participated in Art
o f the Season, a city-wide holiday
craft fair for children that benefits
Atlanta's Children's Health Care

The Four Com ers Snowmobile
Club held a playday at Kelly Prairie
on Dec. 30.
There were over 50
snowm obilers there to enjoy
hotdogs, chili and a poker-run.

presented Ihursday, Jan. 17, at 1:30
p.m. at the Heppner Elks Lodge as
the kick o ff o f the "country" in the
Heppner Town and Country Day
celebration as the Morrow SWCD
and Morrow County Livestock
Growers jointly present an afternoon
program o f diverse information to
Morrow County citizens.
"Weed" was written by Micki
Panttaja and is performed by the
Repertory Theatre Troupe o f
M oscow. ID. Lhe one-act play
depicts the "very real struggles and
conflicts that make natural resource
decisions so complex".
Chances are. spectators w ill be
able to relate to at least one o f the
characters in the play, whether it’s
an unknown plant, an endangered
fish, or a struggle to reach consensus,
according to a news release. I his
play helps people realize "where
we sit depends on w here we stand",
said the release, lhe play also show s
the danger o f losing the western
lifestyle cherished in rural eastern
Oregon.
"All this is done in a lighthearted
style to bnng the message home and
is a convincing way to see ourselves,
evaluate our beliefs and consider
the beliefs of others." stated the
release.
Funding for travel expenses of
the troupe is prov ided by a grant
from the Oregon Watershed
Enhancement Board and the
Columbia Blue Mt. Resource

Congress are selected through a
rigorous application process based
on the applicant's involvement in
leadership,
com m unication,
citizenship and 4-H projects.
"Attending National 4-H C (ingress
is the highlight o f many 4-H
members' careers," said Jim
Rutledge, OSU Extension 4-11 Youth
program leader. "It is quite an honor
to be selected as an Oregon
delegate."
The 4-Hers in the Oregon
delegation range fromjumors in high
school to college freshmen, according
to Arnold.
