Heppner's tight defensive play
held lone to one point in the first
quarter w hile the Mustangs dumped
in 14 points. Even with the 13-point
deficit in the first quarter, the Lady
Cardinals did not give up and were
able to get themselves back into the
gam e.
lone outscored Heppner in the
second and third quarters but was
unable to take the lead, losing to
H eppner 43-55.
Diana McElligott led the Cardinals
-with 16 points, two assists and led
the team w ith six steals. Aniellia
Peck scored 10 points, grabbed four
rebounds and delivered one assist.
Salli McElligott made three attempts
from the three-point area for a total
o f nine points. M cElligott also
captured two rebounds, seized one
steal and delivered one assist. Natalie
M cElligott scored four points,
apprehended four rebounds, and
handed out one assist.
Kristina Powell scored three
points, grabbed one rebound and
one steal. Cyndi Heagy scored two
points at the free throw' line, passed
o ff two assists and captured four
rebounds and three steals. Tracy
Griffith aided in the team pilferage
with two steals.
lone varsity men were also
unsuccessful at claiming a victory
over Heppner Mustangs. Heppner
outscored lone, 86-56.
lone had a 28-40 deficit after the
first half but the Mustangs released
29 points in the third quarter alone.
lone’s leading point producer was
Brad Burright with 25 points.
Bumght also grabbed three rebounds
and blocked one shot. Ashley Roberts
contributed 11 points, delivered three
assists, three rebounds and one steal
to the team effort. Adam Neiffer
scored eight points, handed out two
assists, and nabbed two steals.
Andrew Rietmann scored seven
points, passed o ff four assists and
grabbed two rebounds. Billy Gates
added five point, delivered three
assists, grabbed two rebounds and
one steal.

totally dominated the Stanfield Tigers
on Tuesday, Dec. 11.
The Lady Cardm alsjum ped out
early in the first quarter to lead the
Tigers 9-2. Salli McElligott
intercepted a ball, passed it off to
her sister, Diana, w ho took the ball
inside for two points. Diana
McElligott and Amellia Peck should
have been cited for petty larceny
as both had several steals in the first
quarter o f the game.
Salli McElligott launched a three
point shot in the second quarter and
was fouled, adding insult to injury.
At the close o f the first half, lone
led Stanfield, 24-9.
Amellia Peck led the team w ith
20 points. Peck also seized the team
with six steals, captured five
rebounds and delivered one assist.
Diana McElligott scored 13 points,
led the team larceny with eight steals
and captured two rebounds. Natalie
McElligott contributed nine points.

During the lone varsity girls’ game
on Dec. 14, Natalie McElligott drew
a foul in the first minute o f the game
against Umatilla and scored the first
two points o f the game at the free
throw line. Toward the end o f the
first quarter, the Lady Cardinals
threw up several shots that just
wouldn't fall. With two seconds
remaining in the first quarter, the
Lady Cardinais were down 5-8 w hen
Salli McElligott launched a three
point shot to tie the score at eight.
In the beginning o f the second
quarter, Umatilla made a foul shot
to lead lone by one point. Amellia
Peck drove to the center for two
points and then repeated the
perform ance to lead 12-9. The
Vikings followed up with several
steals and soon the lone team trailed
12-13. The game remained extremely
tight. When the score was tied at
14-14, Salli McElligott pumped in
two consecutive three point shots
to take the lead at 20-14. Amellia
Peck then drove into the center,
scored two points and drew' a foul,
making two additional points at the
free throw line to lead 24-14.
Umatilla applied a full court press
m an effort to keep the Cardinals
from scoring the last two minutes
o f the first half. With 10 seconds
remaining in the first half, Natalie
M cElligott made a steal, the ball
was passed to Diana McElligott and
at halftim e, lone had a 26-16 lead.
In the third quarter, lone w'as
plagued with turnovers. Umatilla
capitalized on the Cardinals'
misfortune and with three minutes
remaining in the quarter, both teams

In the fourth quarter, Kristina
Powell was called upon and donated
tw o points at the free throw line when
U m atilla drew a technical foul.
Am ellia Peck had outstanding
offensive play throughout the game,
grabbed an offensive rebound and
scored a basket to lead the Vikings
51-47. The Lady Cardinals kept their
lead the rem ainder o f the quarter
and finally closed with a 81-55
victory.

junior varsity women lost a tight
battle against the Tigers, 22-24.
Eva Chitty put lone on the
scoreboard with two points at the
beginning o f the first quarter. Megan
E. McCabe did an outstanding job
otrebounding, captured an offensive
rebound and scored two points for
the Cardinals. Alyssa Rietmann drew
a foul and hit one o f two attempts
for a 6-8 deficit at the end o f the
quarter.
Meghan M. McCabe launched
a shot from three-point territory and
donated one point at the charity
stripe. Sara Peck hit a basket for two
points and made one of two attempts
at the free throw line for a 12-16
score at the half.
In the third quarter, Emily Key
intercepted a Stanfield pass, drove
the ball down to the basket to score
and drew a foul in the process. Key
canned one o f two attempts at the
free throw line. With 10 seconds
left in the quarter, Barbara Holland
scored two points to tie the score
at 18, drew a foul and scored one
point to lead the C ardinals 19-18
at the close o f the quarter.
The fourth quarter remained
extremely tight. Stanfield added four
points to the scoreboard to lead the
Cardinals by three. Emily Key robbed
another Tiger possession and scored
two for the Cardinals to close the
lead within one. Stanfield scored
an additional two points to secure
the win..
Sara Peck displayed an
outstanding performance, leading
her team with five points, three
rebounds and one steal. Barbara
Holland added four points, five
rebounds and one steal. Meghan M.
McCabe scored four points, captured
one rebound and nabbed two steals.
Emily Key scored three points, led

captured one rebound.

Tournam ent on Friday, Dec. 14.
Within two minutes o f the first
quarter the score was tied at 4-4 when
Billy Gates fired a missile from the
three-point territory to lead Umatilla
7-4. Billy Gates and Ashley Roberts
pumped in an total of seven buckets
from the three-point territory and
w ith three m inutes o ff the clock,
Roberts sent an impressive pass
inside to Adam McCabe for a basket
and a 25-15 lead.
Adam Neiffer seized a rebound
under the Viking bucket and made
a long pass to Brad Bumght to score
two. Andrew Rietmann repeated
the performance with another long
pass to B um ght for an additional
two points and a 31 -21 lead. lone
men did an outstanding job of getting
the ball to the middle for Burright
to score.
Umatilla turned up the heat, and
with two and a h alf minutes
remaining in the first half, had closed
the lead to w ithin two points, 34-32.
Adam Neiffer came out in the
third quarter, captured a Viking
possession and took it down the court
to score two. Neiffer continued on
a mission, donated two points at the
free throw line and then scored an,
additional two points off an offensive
rebound to help the Cardinals secure
a 57-40 lead at the end of the quarter.
The Cardinal men had nearly
Haw less passing in the fourth quarter.
Umatilla had a difficult time keeping
up with the lane men. With two and
a half minutes left in the game, lone
had a 69-58 lead. Umatilla made
a comeback to close the lead to tour
points. With three seconds remaining.
Um atilla scored three points to
tighten the score to 72-71. Ashley
Roberts drew a foul with tw o seconds
remaining and secured the 73-71
victory for his lone squad.
Brad B um ght was the leading
point manufacturer with 26 points.
B um ght delivered one assist,
apprehended 16 rebounds, overturned
one Umatilla possession and blocked
one Viking attem pt for a basket.
Ashley Roberts scored 16 points,
brought down five rebounds, two
steals and delivered nine assists. Billy
Gates scored nine points from three-
point territory, delivered three assists
and earned one steal. Adam McCabe
scored eight points and grabbed one
rebound.
Adam N eiffer contributed six
points, delivered one assist, brought
down four rebounds and nabbed
three steals. Andrew Rietmann scored
five points, passed out seven assists
and grabbed three rebounds.
