Mustang girls fall to Condon eBay auctions

Too many trips to the free throw
line by the Condon Blue Devils
spelled defeat for the visiting
Heppner Mustangs as they fell, 63-
47, in the first game o f the season
for both teams. The Blue Devils hit
25 o f 38 free throws to the Mustangs'
10 o f 14 to help them get the win.
'Die game was put together at the
last minute as snowy roads kept Elgin
from traveling to Condon and
Heppner from getting to Joseph. The
Mustangs host Joseph on Friday,
Dec. 7, in their next action.
Meghan Bailey and Jesse Kempas
each hit three-pointers in the first
as the Mustangs trailed 14-12 after
one and eventually took a 19-16 lead
on another three-pointer by Kempas.
Bailey hit a second three-pointer
to make it 22-20, but the Blue Devils
went on a 7-0 run to end the half
with a 27-22 lead.
Shelley Rietmann scored on a
pass from Lacey Matteson to open
the third quarter, but the Blue Devils
scored four straight before Tylynn
Smith scored on a rebound. Kempas
converted a three- point play to cut
the lead to 35-31, but the Blue Devils
went on another 7-0 run to end the
quarter and take a 4 2 -3 1 lead.
The Blue Devils increased their
lead to 52-34 before Matteson hit

victory over Walla Walla
lone junior varsity men hosted
Walla Walla Valley Academy on
Tuesday, Nov. 27. lone led by three
points, 9-6, at the end o f the first
quarter. Walla Walla scored 13 points
in the second quarter and held the
Cardinal men to only six points to
lead lone 19-15 at the half. The
C ardinals came out in the third
quarter and scored 12 points, nearly
matching point for point, when Walla
Walla scored 11 points to close the
WW VA lead within three points,
27-30.
lone's big quarter came in the
fourth when the Cardinals outscored
Walla Walla by adding 19 points
to the quarter and holding WWVA
to nine points. lone men capped the
game with a 46-39 victory.
Nick Christman led the Cardinal
crusade with 10 points, five
rebounds, three assists, three steals
and blocked one shot attempt. Cayle
Krebs had an outstanding game,
scoring 10 points, grabbing 14
rebounds, dishing out six assists,
stealing one ball and blocking one
WWVA shot attempt. Til Tullis also
contributed 10 points, grabbed four
rebounds and handed out two assists.
Tyler Raible scored eight points
and brought down seven rebounds.
Jeff Hunt landed eight points,
grabbed seven rebounds, grabbed
one WVWA possession and blocked
one shot attempt. Mike Radie made
his presence known, grabbing six
rebounds, delivering one assist,
robbing two Walla Walla possessions
and blocking one shot attempt. Also
helping the Cardinals on the boards

rebounds, Johnny Collin with two

lone JV boys lose to Enterprise
lone junior varsity teams hosted
Enterprise on Saturday morning,
Dec. 1. The game ended with a loss
to the Savages.
lone men were com petitive
against the Savages with a score o f
11-18 at the end o f the first quarter.
The Savages widened the lead by
adding an additional 16 points and
allowing the C ardinals 10 points
in the second quarter for a 21 -34
lead at the half. The Cardinals had
a slow fourth quarter while Enterpnse
turned up the tem po scoring
additional 19 points for their final
quarter securing the Savage victory.
Nick Chnstman led the Cardinal
men with 13 points, five rebounds,
tw o assists, two steals and one
blocked shot. Mike Radie scooped
in 11 promts, grabbed 10 rebounds,
handed out four assists, robbed two
Enterpnse possessions and blocked
one shot attempt. Tyler Raible added
four points, two rebounds, one assist
and one steal to the Cardinal arsenal.

New members named to
HES Site council
The Heppner Elementary
School Site Council introduced
two new m em bers, Nancy
M cElhany and Mary West, at
their Nov. 5 meeting.
Also at the meeting,
teacher Sherry M atteson was
elected chaiiperson, teacher Cara
Osmin, vice-chair, staff m em ber
M cElhany,

parent
representative West, distribution,
and Principal Phyllis Danielson,
team builder.
The group updated the
site
council
by-law s
and
constitution,
m aking
them
consistent with district and state
by-laws.
The
council
was
provided
the
Heppner
Elem entary School test analysis
and then broke into groups to
form measurable goals to meet or
exceed benchmarks.
Danielson reported that
"Authors in Autum n," a reading
activity organized by teacher
Jannie Allen, was attended by
over 50 children.
The council heard that
the "Galaxy o f Stars" reading
program at HES is at 56 percent
participation.
Danielson read a letter
written by a second grader to
President Bush, sharing her
"heartfelt" thoughts concerning
the W orld Trade C enter crisis.
The next site council
m eeting was scheduled for Dec.
3.

National 4-H Council is
conducting a series o f auctions o f
Limited Edition Prints on eBay.com
that benefit each 4-H State
Foundation.
The prints, entitled "Celebrating
100 Years o f 4-H (1902-2002)",
feature comic stnp character Garfield
and the 4-H Pledge. Fifty-four
15"x35" numbered prints have been
produced and each is hand signed
by Garfield creator, Jim Davis. Davis
is a former 4-H 'er whose father
founded the Lake Galatia 4-H Club
in Fairmount, Indiana. Founded in
1952, the club continues to exist
today.
Fifty-three prints will be auctioned
on eBay.com between November
18 o f this year and November 23
o f 2002. Each week a 4-H State
Foundation will receive one-half
of the sale price (highest bid) o f the
print. Bidding is open to residents
(18 years or older) o f all states for
all auctions regardless o f which state
benefits from the sale.
The Oregon 4-H Foundation will
receive o ne-half o f the sale price
o f the pnnt sold between December
9-15,2001.
