Mustangs end season with Amity loss

A very successful season for the
Heppner Mustang football team
ended in the semi-finals o f the
O SAA-U.S. Bank 2A playoffs at
the hands o f the top-ranked, three
time defending state champion Amity
Warriors, 34-8. at Hare Field in
Hillsboro on Saturday, Nov. 24. It
was the third straight year the
Wamors ended the Mustangs’ season
in the state playoffs on their way
to the title.
The Mustangs finished the year
with a 10-2 record and advanced
to the semi-finals for the third time
in school history with the last time
coming in 1992 when they won the
state championship.
It also ended the high school
Careers of 10 seniors who have been
together since sixth grade as they
were part o f the first Colt football
team. Taking o ff their Mustangs
jerseys for the last time were Stefan
Matheny, Brian Rust, Michael
M cCabe, Kelly Paullus. Brad
Bowman, Travis Bellam y, Sam
VanLiew, Jody Maddem. David
Norton and Leland Rill.
The game started out well for the
Mustangs as the defense held and
they took over at the Wamors' 26
yard line after a short punt. Chuy
Elguezabal hit McCabe for a 14-yard
gain on third down for a first down
at the 10, but the drive stalled and
Amity took over on downs.

The Warriors drove down the
field and scored their first touchdown
on an eight-yard run by Baltazar
Campuzano on the first play o f the
second quarter. Clint Groom kicked
the extra point to make it 7-0, Amity.
The Mustangs took over at their
own 22 after the kick-off and Brad
Adams ran for seven yards on first
down. An illegal motion penalty and
two incomplete passes later they were
forced to punt.
The Wamors were unable to move
the ball and were forced to punt with
the Mustangs taking over at their
own 38-yard line. Elguezabal hit
Norton for an eight-yard gain but
was sacked for a seven-yard loss
to force a punt.
Amity drove down the field and
Campuzano scored his second
touchdown on a one-yard run with
Groom's lack making it 14-0 midway
through the second quarter.
Taking over at their own 25 after
the kick-off, Elguezabal hit Matheny
for six yards with a face mask penalty
tacking on another five yards and
a first down. McCabe ran for 10
yards and a first down and
Elguezabal hit Matheny for nine
more, but the drive ended on an

side o f the Buttercreek junction on
Highway 207. There was one fatality.
