Siren testing to be conducted
Siren testing of individual sirens
in thè CSEPP outdoor warning
system will be conducted November
14, 15 and 16 in order to help
determine where additional new
sirens will be placed, according to
Chris Brown, Oregon State CSEPP
manager. The tests will run
intermittently from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
each day
Jeff Whattam of SAFR Systems,
a Richland, WA„ engineering and
communications firm, will be testing
the acoustic propagation patterns
of 13 sirens added or moved to new
locations two years ago. The study
will measure the acoustic range of
each siren to determine where new
units will be installed. Each siren
is usually spaced about a mile apart
but hilly terrain, heavy foliage or
other obstacles may limit the range
o f a siren's wail.
Each siren will be turned on and
off for a few seconds at a time to
take acoustic readings. Residents
should not be alarmed when they
hear a siren start to wail.
The siren system can be activated
from four different locations
including the Morrow County 9-1-1
Center in Heppner, the Umatilla
Chemical Depot Emergency
Operations Center, the Hermiston
Safety Center and the Umatilla
County 9-1-1 center in Pendleton.
For more information on the
CSEPP siren system, call 966-9640.
