The Royals were geared up to stop the run so the Mustangs went to the air as Stefan Matheny caught three touchdown passes, tw o from Chuy Elguezabal and one from Michael McCabe on a halfback pass. The win puts the M ustangs in the quarterfinals against the Oakndge Warriors in Oakridge on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m. The ninth-ranked Warriors won the Tri-Co. League title and won their first round game. 34-14 over Bonanza. The Royals caught the Mustangs o ff guard by com ing out in a no huddle offense, driving the ball down the field and appeared ready to score, but Mdtheny got the first o f his two interceptions in the end zone to stop the drive. A short gain by McCabe set up a 48-yard pass play to Matheny from Elguezabal to the 29-yard line o f Portland Christian. After an illegal procedure penalty, Kyler Lovgren ran twice for 10 yards and on fourth down, M cCabe hit a wide open Matheny for a 24-yard touchdown. Elguezabal kicked the extra point to make it 7-0. The Royals turned the ball over again on a fumble recovered by Adam Bergstrom at the Portland Chnstian 36-yard line. Matheny ran for two, and. after an incomplete pass, McCabe went for 13 yards to the 22. After an offsides penalty on the Royals, Matheny made a diving catch for a 14-yard gain to the three. Lovgren took it in on his second try for the touchdown, then Matheny hit Luke Murray in the back o f the end zone for the two-point conversion and a 15-0 lead. On the Royals' next possession, David Norton made a juggling, diving interception in the backfield to give the Mustangs the ball at the Portland Christian 45-yard line. Elguezabal hit McCabe for 17 yards but the Royals' defense stiffened to bring up a fourth and eight. Elguezabal found Matheny behind the defense for a 28-yard touchdown to make it 21-0 late in the first quarter. Brian Rust made a tackle in the backfield fora six-yard loss to force a punt which took a Mustang bounce and was downed at the Royals' 24 yard line. Matheny ran for one then five to set up an 18-yard scramble for a touchdown by Elguezabal, who also kicked the extra point to make it 28-0 early in the second quarter. The M ustangs' defense held, forcing a punt which was returned to the Heppner 46. Lovgren ran for one, then six, Brad Adams went for two, then eight and a first down. Elguezabal went for three, then nine, McCabe ran for five, then caught a 12-yard pass from Elguezabal on a fourth and five down to the three. A motion penalty brought it back to the eight where Lovgren went for five and McCabe took it in for the touchdown. Matheny ran in the two-point conversion to make it 36-0 at halftime. The Mustangs received the second half kick-off, but couldn't move the ball and were forced to punt. The Royals moved it down to the Heppner 31-yard line before they were stopped. McCabe went for nine and Adams ran for seven more to set up a 53- yard touchdown pass from Elguezabal to Matheny. The pass failed on the conversion but the Mustangs led 42-0 midway through the third. The Mustangs held again to force a punt which Matheny returned 40 yards, getting several good blpcks along the way, down to the Portland Chnstian 28-yard line. After a fumble lost four yards, Brian Rust ran for five then caught a 21 -yard pass from Tanner Britt on fourth down to the 10. But they went backward from there and a 35-yard field goal try came up short. Matheny ran for three. Rust, one, Elguezabal for 12 and a first down at the 20. M cCabe ran for two, Adams, five, and McCabe, five more and another first down. Aaron Delveaux ran for one, then Bntt hit Justin Botefuhr for 21 yards. Delveaux ran for one more but the Royals took over at their own 39 on downs. The Mustangs and Royals took turns having the ball around the 40 yard line before McCabe scored his second touchdown late on a 40-yard run to make the final 48-0. McCabe led all rushers with 83 yards on 13 carries, caught two passes for 29 yards and completed a 24 yard touchdown pass. Matheny caught five passes for 167 yards and three touchdowns. Elguezabal completed six o f 11 passes for 172 yards and ran six times for 44 yards. Adams ran for 36 yards and Lovgren for 25 yards as the M ustangs ran for 208 yards and passed for another 238 yards. The defense held the Royals to 36 yard rushing on 16 carries and 104 yards passing on six o f 28 with three interceptions. Matheny led the way with 22 defensive points with two interceptions, while M cCabe picked up 17 points and Norton 14 points along with an interception. Donald Adams had 12 points and Brad Adams and Conor Kilkenny had 11 each. Brent Eckman, 10, a fourth grader at Heppner High School, was challenged this Halloween after he had been diagnosed with diabetes. Brent still went trick-or-treating, but turned his bounty into a benefit for someone else. The day after Halloween Brent, with the help o f his mom, Judy, began selling his candy-for a good cause. He raised $62.30 which he donated to the Matheny family fund. David M atheny was critically injured in a horse riding accident. Brent got the idea to donate to the M atheny fund because his older brother Jared and M atheny's older son, Shane, are good friends.
