M ustangs overcome
turnovers to beat TigerScots

Mustang quarterback Chuy Elguezabal rolls out for a pass

Despite turning the ball over seven
times and spotting Weston-McEwen
a 7-0 lead after one quarter, the
Heppner M ustangs cam e back to
beat the Tigerscots, 34-7, in Athena
on Fnday, Oct. 5. The won improved
the third-ranked Mustangs' Columbia
Basin Conference record to 3-0 and
6-1 overall.
The M ustangs host the fourth-
ranked Culver Bulldogs in a CBC
showdown for first place on
Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m.
The M ustangs had their first
fumble on their second play and the
fired-up Tigerscots drove down and
scored on an Eric Delph 10-yard
run, kicked the extra point and took
a 7-0 lead.
The Mustangs took over at their
own 21 after the kick-off and Stefan
Matheny had a short gain, then broke
free around end for 48 yards to the
Tigerscots' 28-yard line. Kyler
Lovgren went for 11, but a fumble
on the next play gave the ball back
to W sston-M cEw en.
The Tigerscots drove to midfield
before the defense finally held and
forced a punt. The Mustangs took
over at their own 24, but a 10-yard
gain by M atheny was taken back
to the 20 on a face m ask penalty.
After a loss o f three, Michael
McCabe ran for 19 yards and a first
down. Lovgren ran for two, McCabe
for 14 and Chuy Elguezabal went
for 24 yards to the 25 as the first
quarter ended.
On the first play o f the second
quarter, Elguezabal hit David Norton
for a 25-yard touchdown pass.
Elguezabal kicked the extra point
to tie the gam e at 7-7.
The Mustangs got the ball back
at their own 40 after the defense held.
Lovgren w ent for four and
Elguezabal kept the ball on the option
and went for 56 yards and a
touchdown. He then added the extra
point to give the Mustangs a 14-7
lead.
The defense held again with the
Mustangs taking over at their own
26 after the punt. After an incomplete
pass, Lovgren ran for nine. McCabe
went for 10, then five, and Lovgren
went for 31 to the Tigerscot 20. After
a loss o f one, M cCabe picked up
six to set up a 15-yard pass from
Elguezabal to M atheny for a
touchdown. Elguezabal's kick was
again good to m ake it 21-7.
The Mustangs’ defease again held
and they took over at their own 33
after a punt. McCabe picked up nine,
Elguezabal ran for four, then passed
to M cCabe for 14 yards and then
11 more yards. With just 15 seconds,
left in the half, Elguezabal hit
M atheny for 31 yards and a
touchdown. The kick was blocked
but the Mustangs took a 27-7 lead
into the locker room.
Elguezabal was six o f seven for
105 yards and three touchdow ns
and ran for another in the second
quarter.
The Mustangs' defense held to
open the third quarter, forcing a punt,
but an interception gave the ball back
to the Tigerscots. Brian Rust
recovered a fum ble but W eston-
McEwen got the ball back on another
interception at their own 14.
The defense held with the
Mustangs taking over at midfield.
Elguezabal went for three and
Lovgren for four. M cCabe picked
up four more and Elguezabal three
more to the Tigerscot 38-yard line.
Matheny ran for 10, then 12, but
an interception in the end zone gave
the ball back to the Tigerscots.
The Mustangs took over at their
own 40 after forcing a punt early
in the fourth quarter. Elguezabal
hit Lovgren for 31 yards and McCabe
ran for 13. A fumble lost two yards,
but Donald Adams ran for nine and,
on fourth and three. Matheny picked
up five yards and a first down.
McCabe then ran five yards for a
touchdown and Elguezabal's kick
m ade it 34-7.
The defense held one more time
with the M ustangs taking over at
the Tigerscots’ 48-yard line. Lovgren
ran for four, M cCabe for 12 and
Matheny for 12 more. Tyler Boyer
was held to no gain and Lovgren
ran for seven, but a fumble gave the
ball back to the Tigerscots at their
own 12 as tim e ran out.
The defense was led by Travis
Bellamy who racked up 26 defensive
points. Elguezabal and McCabe each
had 17 points, with Adams adding
14. M atheny and Conor Kilkenny
each had 11 and Norton and Rust
each finished with 10 points.
Elguezabal ended up completing
seven o f 12 passes for 136 yards
with three touchdow ns and three
interceptions. He also rushed for
58 yards and a touchdown.
Matheny rushed eight times for
104 yards and also caught two passes
for 46 yards, both touchdowns.
McCabe had 14 carries for 94 yards
and caught three passes for 34 yards.
Lovgren rushed 13 times for 79 yards
and caught one pass for 31 yards.

lone Cardinal Cardinals lose to Dufur in tough game
varsity stuns
Condon
Thursday, Oct. 4, was definitely
Cardinal night at lone High School.
The lone varsity volleyball team
stunned Condon by handing them
a loss, 15-8, 8-15, 19-17.
Condon held the sole spot for
the number one position in the league
before Thursday's match and now
shares the top position with lone.
Meghan M. McCabe served the
first serve o f the match, sent over
two aced serves and scored one more
to lead the Devils, 3-0, early in the
match. The Lady Cardinals came
to the game ready to play and pretty
much dom inated the Blue Devils
in the first game, defeating Condon,
15-8.
In the second game, lone led the
Blue Devils by three points, but
then let down their defenses and
started m aking some bad passes.
Condon capitalized on lone's
mistakes and took the second game
with a 15-8 win.
lone started the third game with
a 9-6 lead, but bad passes and some
missed serves allowed Condon to
take a 9-14 lead. Amellia Peck pulled
out all the big guns and aced five
consecutive serves to tie the score
at 14.
The Cardinals and the Blue Devils
engaged in a vicious dogfight. The
score was tight, going back and forth
with long rallies in between. The
score was tied at 17 when,
sophom ore Natalie M cElligott
delivered a huge kill from the back
row for the Cardinal side out. Salli
McElligott served out the remainder
o f the match, sending over a serve
that the Blue Devils couldn't touch
for an ace. Condon returned the
second o f M cElligott's serve but
Amellia Peck made an excellent
block to end the match with a score
o f 19-17.
Am ellia Peck was one o f the
leading point creators with nine
points, six aced serves, 15 passes,
eight hits, one kill, one diving save
and two blocks. Megan E. McCabe
led the team with set assists and
scored nine points, including one
ace. Natalie McElligott also delivered
nine points, one ace, five passes,
three diving digs, two blocks, six
hits and four kills.
Meghan M. McCabe scored six
points, delivered three aced serves
and distributed 28 set assists. Diana
McElligott added five points, four
o f which were unanswered serves.
M cElligott also contributed 11
passes, six hits, four kills, two diving
digs, two blocks and three set assists.
Salli McElligott scored four points,
all on aced serves, and delivered
10 passes, 10 hits, one kill, one
diving dig and one block. Cyndi
Heagy played outstanding at the net
with three kills and one spike.
Kristina Powell also did some
damage to the Devils by hitting two
kills and blocking two hit attempts.
Creamery
receives
USDA grant
The U.S. D epartm ent ot
Agriculture recently announced the
approval o f 32 value-added
agricultural
product
market
developm ent grants in 21 states,
totaling over $ 10 million. The grants
will foster the development o f new
products
and
m arkets
for
agriculturally based products.
The Tillamook County Creamery
Association will receive $500,000
for its Columbia River Processing,
Inc., subsidiary to open a new cheese
plant in Boardman. The grant funds
will be used to help pay the start-up
costs o f the new plant, including
salaries and inventory costs.
"The food and energy products
derived from raw agricultural
com m odities will allow producers
to reahze greater economic benefit
for what they produce," said USDA
Secretary Ann M. Veneman.
"Agriculture remains the cornerstone
o f America's rural econom y, and
if s important to develop new markets
for agricultural products."

lone’s Adam McCabe brings down Dufur ball carrier

lone fans traveled to Dufur
Saturday, October 6, for what was
believed to be one o f this year's
toughest league football games.
lone started out strong by making
the first touchdown o f the game and
scoring the extra points. Although
the Dufur Rangers were concerned
by the offensive attack, they rallied
back and defeated the Cardinals 48-
lb , lone's only loss thus far this
season.
The Cardinals' offense was led
by quarterback Brad Bumght who
completed three passes for 17 yards,
had 15 carries for 137 yards and as
a receiver, caught two passes for
68 yards.
lone's offensive team was strong
against one o f the biggest defensive
lines in the state. Andrew Rietmann
ran eight times. Nick Chnstman came
in as quarterback, completing seven
passes for a gain o f 28 yards. Ashley
Roberts carried the ball four times
for 12 yards. Adam McCabe received
six passes for 32 yards and Adam
Neiffer received two for seven yards
and rushed once for two yards and
on defense blocked a pass.
Koby Rea intercepted a pass and
blocked another pass. Adam Neiffer
recovered a fumble and Brad
Burright caused a fumble, which
was recovered by M ike Radie.
Tackling was aggressive and Hard
against this tough competitor. Ashley
Cardinal varsity loses tight match to Dufur
The Cardinal varsity volleyball
team lost a tight match against Dufur
on Saturday, O ctober 6.
The Cardinals were plagued with
bad passes at the beginning o f the
first game but came back and started
blocking the Rangers on the net to
tie the game at 7. Diana McElligott
served the last two points in the first
game, defeating the Rangers, 15-12.
In the second game of the match,
the C ardinals had a slow start,
coming from a 5-9 deficit to tie the
score at 11. lone had difficulty
making good passes and stopped
covering the hitters at the net,
allowing Dufur to take the second
game, 11-15.
lone trailed early in the third
game, but fought their way back to
close the score. Natalie McElligott
aced a serve to tie the score at 15
but Dufur retaliated by earning the
side out and scoring the last two
points o f the match, 15-17.
Coach Charity M cElligott
commented. " We really had some
inconsistent play. We had some
controversial calls during the match
and also had penods when our passes
weren't up to par."
Natalie M cElligott served 14
points for the Cardinals, three o f
which were aced serves. McElligott
also controlled 10 passes, made two
saves, eight hits, two kills and five
blocks. Diana McElligott scored eight
points, passed 12 balls, made seven
saves, delivered six hits and four
kills and led the team with five

The Heppner Mustang JV football
team lost at Boardm an to the
Riverside Pirates, 14-6, on Monday,
Oct. 1, but came back to beat the
visiting lone Cardinals, 44-16, in
an eight-man game on Monday, Oct.
8, to even their record at 2-2 on the
year.
The JVs host Pilot Rock next on
M onday, Oct. 15, at 6 p.m.
Against the Pirates, the Mustangs'
only touchdown came on a 45-yard
pass from Tanner Britt to Justin
Botefuhr. They had the ball on the
three yard line when time ran out.
Against the C ardinals, the
Mustangs took a 6-0 first quarter
lead on a 24-yard run by Britt, who
opened the second quarter by sconng
on a five-yard run. Botefuhr then
scored on a 51 -yard pass from Bntt.
David Flynn kicked the extra point
to m ake it 19-0.
Aaron Delveaux broke free on
a 35-yard run to the 10 where Tyler
Boyer took it in for a touchdown.
Flynn kicked the extra point to make
it 26-0. Brian Smith blocked an lone
punt which was recovered by Robert
Whalen at the 21. Boyer then scored
on a 13-yard run to m ake it 32-0.
Jode Coil picked o ff a pass and
returned it 30 yards to the 25 to set
up a one-yard run by Flynn to make
it 38-0 at halftim e.
On the Cardinals' first possession
o f the third quarter, they drove to
the Mustangs' 20, but fumbled. The
fum ble was recovered by Ben
Turrell. The Mustangs fumbled the
ball back to the Cardinals, but held
on downs.
The Cardinals got on the board
in the fourth quarter on a 54-yard
run by Nick Christman. Christman
passed to Koby Rea for the two-point
conversion to m ake it 38-8.
Delveaux broke free for a 40-yard
gain to the Cardinals' seven, where
Coil scored to m ake it 44-8.
The Cardinals drove down the
field but Britt intercepted a pass
inside the 10 and returned it to the
20 late in the fourth. The Mustangs
then fumbled the ball back to the
Cardinals, who scored on a pass from
Christman to Billy Gates from 15
yards out. Gates ran in the two-point
conversion to make the final 44-16.
