Mustangs dominate Eagles

The third-ranked Heppner
Mustangs rushed for 361 yards to
run past the Wahtonka liagles, 42-14,
in The Dalles on Friday, Sept. 28,
to improve their Colum bia Basin
Conference record to 2-0 and 4-1
overall. A solid defensive effort held
the Eagles to 46 yards on the ground
and 169 overall with most o f those
coming late when the outcome had
already been decided.
On their first possession, the
Eagles were forced to punt but the
M ustangs gave the bail back on a
fumble. The defense held again with
the Mustangs taking over at their
10 after a long punt.
Stefan Matheny ran for five and
M ichael M cCabe for three. An
offsides penalty gave the Mustangs
a first down. McCabe picked up 14
more and a personal foul penalty
moved the ball to the Eagle 48 yard
line. Kyler Lovgren ran for three,
Matheny for eight and another first
down; McCabe for nine and Lovgren
for four more and another first down.
Kelly Paullus then caught a 24-yard
pass for a touchdown from Chuy
Elguezabal. Matheny ran in the two-
point conversion to make it 8-0 with
4:05 left in the first quarter.
The defense held again with the
Mustangs taking over at their own
37 yard line. Lovgren went for three.
Matheny broke free for 19 yards.
McCabe ran twice for six yards and
Elguezabal ran for 15 and a first
down at the 19. A clipping penalty
took it back to the 34. Elguezabal
went for 11, then 16 yards to the
seven. M atheny went for four and
McCabe took it in from there for
, a touchdown, with Elguezabal
kicking the extra point to m ake it
15-0 early in the second quarter.
The team s traded punts with a
fumble on fourth down, giving the
Mustangs the ball at the Eagle 38-
yard line. Lovgren ran for 19, then
14 yards to set up a M atheny five-
yard run for a touchdown.
Elguezabal's extra point make it 22-0
late in the second quarter.
Brian Rust intercepted a pass
tipped by M cCabe and returned it
to the Eagle 37, but the Mustangs
were unable to score again before
halftime.
The M ustangs held the Eagles
to minus-four yards rushing and 26
yards passing in the first half.
The M ustangs were unable to
move the ball on their first possession
o f the second half, but got the ball
back on a M cCabe interception at
their own 46. David Norton caught
a 23-yard pass from Elguezabal.
Lovgren ran for two and McCabe
for four. M cCabe then broke free
around end for 23 yards to the one-
yard line. A fter losing a yard,
Matheny took it in for the touchdown
and Elguezabal kicked the extra point
to make it 29-0 midway through the
third quarter.
The defense held again and the
Mustangs took over at their own 31
after a clipping penalty on the punt
return. After a m otion penalty,
Matheny ran for 11 and Lovgren
for six more and for a first down
at the 43. Matheny ran for 17 more
before McCabe took off on a 41 -yard
touchdow n run. The kick was
blocked but the Mustangs led 35-0
late in the third.
The Eagles then got on the board
on a long pass but the M ustangs
blocked the extra point to make it
35-6 after three.
The Mustangs took over at their
ow n 37 after the kick with
Elguezabal going for 12, McCabe
for four and Donald Adams for seven
m ore and another first down.
McCabe went for 12 and Matheny
for six. After an incomplete pass,
McCabe caught a 21 -yard touchdown
pass from Elguezabal who kicked
the extra point to m ake it 42-6.
A M ustang fum ble late in the
game gave the Eagles the ball at the
Mustangs' 27 and they scored with
41 seconds left on a 15-yard pass.
McCabe led the defense with 21
defensive points. Donald Adams
had 16 points, Luke Murray and
Paullus each had 13 points with Rust,
C onor Kilkenny and Adam
Bergstrom adding 10 points each.
Norton and Elguezabal each had
eight points.
McCabe led all rushers with 126
yards on 13 carries and three
touchdowns. He also caught three
passes for 37 yards and another score.
M atheny rushed 13 times for 87
yards, Elguezabal seven times for
66 yards and Lovgren had 10 rushes
for 65 yards.
Elguezabal completed six o f 12
passes for 81 yards with two
touchdowns and no interceptions.
The Mustangs again had many
penalties called on them, with a total
o f 10 for 105 yards.

tight at the net, blocking several
Mustang hits. lone trailed Heppner,
9-13, in the first game, but Amellia
Peck turned up the heat, slammed
over a kill and served an ace to pass
the M ustangs, 14-13.
With the score tied at 14, Natalie
McElligott delivered a huge kill for
the side out, allowing Meghan
McCabe to score the last two points
in the first game for a score o f 16-14.

let down a little, allowing the
M ustangs to gain the lead and
eventually the win.
Natalie M cElligott delivered
several diving digs in game three
but the Lady Cardinals were unable
to pick up the pace needed to pull
out the match.

two diving digs, one block, seven

accumulated 19 set assists. Natalie
McElligott scored six points for the

lone delivers
loss to Wheeler
The lone varsity volleyball team
delivered a 15-3, 15-9 loss to
W heeler on Friday, Sept. 28.
The Lady C ardinals totally
dominated the Falcons in the first
game, leading 13-0 before Wheeler
scored their first point. In game two,
lone let down their defenses and
allowed Wheeler a 0-3 lead before
Megan E. McCabe scored the first
four points for lone. Amellia Peck
served over one point and Meghan
M. McCabe followed with one point
for a 6-3 lead.
W heeler began to pull away
leading lone 9-6, when Diana
M cElligott delivered one point
followed by two aced serves to tie
the score at nine. lone commanded
the lead and did not allow Wheeler
to score the remainder o f the game.
Megan E. McCabe led her team
with 10 points, delivered two aces
and 10 set assists. Diana McElligott
scored seven points, five o f which
were unansw ered by W heeler.
McElligott also passed four balls,
controlled five diving digs, three
blocks, three hits and one kill.
Natalie McElligott added seven
points, serving 100 percent, delivered
five hits, five diving digs and blocked
four hits. Salli M cElligott served
three points, one ace, four passed
balls, two hits and picked up five
diving digs. Meghan M. M cCabe
scored two points, picked up three
diving digs and led her team with
15 set assists.
The Cardinals served 91 percent
and hit 88 percent for the match.

September 29. at the Hardman Community Center. The dinner,
which drew a large crowd of hunters and local people, benefited the
center and W illow Creek Valley Assisted Living.

The Arlington Saddle Club will
hold Queen try-out competition on
Sunday, Oct. 21, at the Saddle Club
arena in Arlington.
The new queen will represent
the Saddle Club for the 2002 rodeo
season at club events and other rodeo
events held in Oregon and
W ashington.
Girls between the ages o f 16 and
21 years o f age by May 1,2002, are
eligible to compete. Contestants must
ride the same horse for the
competition that they would use if
they were chosen queen.
C andidates will be judged on
horsem anship, speaking ability,
personality and appearance.
All queen candidates and their
parents must attend a group meeting
at 11 a m.. Oct. 21. The m eeting
covers all rules and requirements,
and answers questions for both
candidates and parents.
A potluck lunch will be served
at noon and all participants are
welcome to attend. The horsemanship
portion o f the competition will begin
following lunch.

Doris Brosnan has announced.
"Dan and I started the business

book store and soon after added a
color copy service. M ost notably,
Dan became a county commissioner,
almost three years ago, which left
responsibility for the store up to me

"With occasional help from a friend,

don't set a date for closing and stick
with it, I could be here another seven
years from now saying that I am
going to quit."
