Prior to the game, Heppner Scouts presented a flag ceremony By Rick Paullus The third-ranked Heppner Mustangs easily got by the Pilot Rock Rockets, 44-6, in their homecoming game on Friday, Sept. 21. The win improves the Mustangs' overall record to 3 and 1, and 1 and 0 in the Columbia Basin Conference. It didn't come cheap though, as the M ustangs lost ju nior running back/linebacker Brad Adams to an elbow injury on the third play o f the game. M ichael M cCabe rushed nine times for 83 yards and three touchdowns as the Mustangs rushed for over 350 yards as a team with 10 different players running the ball. The Mustangs took over at their own 40 to open the gam e with Adams picking up 11, then three yards before getting hurt. After a motion penalty, McCabe ran for 11 and Stefan M atheny for four more and a first down. McCabe ran for four and Kyler Lovgren ran twice for seven yards each. Matheny went for seven to the 10 and McCabe took it in for a touchdown. The extra point kick w as no good and the Mustangs led 6-0 midway through the first quarter. The defense held and the Mustangs took over at the Pilot Rock 37. After a clipping penalty, McCabe ran for 23 yards, then six more and a first down. Lovgren picked up three, then five to set up McCabe's 18-yard touchdow n run. Chuy Elguezabal kicked the extra point to make it 13-0 with 1:44 left in the first quarter. The defense held again as Brian Rust tackled a Rocket player for a loss and Conor Kilkenny had a sack to force a punt. The M ustangs took over at the Rocket 39 with M cCabe picking up four before Elguezabal hit Kelly Paullus for a 23-yard gain to the 12. M cC abe took it in for his third touchdown and Elguezabal kicked the extra point to make it 20-0 early in the second quarter. A fumbled snap on a punt by the Rockets gave the Mustangs the ball at the Pilot Rock 35. Matheny broke free for 30 yards to the five where Travis Bellam y scored on a guard around play. Elguezabal's kick was good to m ake it 27-0. The M ustangs again had good field position at the Rocket 43 after another punt, with Matheny picking up eight yards on first down. Lovgren then took o ff up the m iddle for a 35-yard touchdown. After the extra point run failed, the Mustangs took a 33-0 lead at halftime. A good kick-off by Rust pinned the Rockets deep and a bad snap in the shotgun formation was fallen on for a safety to increase the M ustangs' lead to 35-0. The Mustangs took over at the Rocket 44 after the free kick with Donald Adams rushing three times for 14 yards. After two rushes lost six yards, Tyler Boyer made a nice catch on a 36-yard touchdown pass from Tanner Britt. The run failed and the Mustangs led 41-0 midway through the third quarter. On the Rockets' next possession, Justin Botefuhr knocked the ball loose which Donald Adams recovered at the Mustangs' 44. Boyer went for five, but a clipping penalty took the ball back to the 32. David Flynn went for five, then seven, but the Mustangs were forced to punt. The punt was fumbled and recovered by Botefur at the Rocket 26-yard line. Jode Coil ran for six and Boyer went for six more and a first down. Flynn went for seven but a 15-yard improper equipment call backed the M ustangs up. On fourth down, Elguezabal came in and kicked a 35-yard field goal that ju st had enough to get over the cross bar and m ake the score 44-0. The Rockets scored their only touchdown on the ensuing kick-off as Bobby Christensen returned it 80 yards for a touchdown. The run failed and the final score o f 44-6 held up to the end. The defense was led by Donald Adams with 15 defensive points, including a fumble recovery. Lovgren and Rust each had 10 points and Kilkenny finished with eight. Bellamy and Aaron Delveaux each had seven points. After McCabe, Lovgren gained 57 yards on five carries, Matheny had 53 yards on five carries and Boyer carried 11 times for 48 yards. v Flynn had eight carries for 32 yards. The Mustangs held the Rockets to 59 total yards.
