Mustangs start season with tournaments

Heppner M ustangs JV and
Varsity teams started out the season
on Saturday, Sept. 8, with
tournam ents in Riverside and
Im gon. Team s from Enterprise,
M ac-Hi, Im bler, Heppner. and
Riverside competed. At the end o f
the tournam ent Enterprise had
received first place, Mac-Hi second,
Heppner third. Riverside fourth,
and Im bler fifth.
Heppner worked hard throughout
the tournament and left Riverside
with two wins, one loss, and a split
match. Heppner won against Imbler,
15-4, 15-3, and against Riverside,
15-9, 15-2. They lost against
Enterprise, 9-15,11-5, and they split
with M ac-Hi, 15-9, 9-15.
Heppner had outstanding serves
from #1 Shelley Rietmann, and #4
Jodie Carlson. Another key player
was #3 Lacey Matteson. The three
Mustang players served for 74 o f
the team 's 94 hard-earned points.
Serves from #7 Codi Rosecrans,
#10 Brett Barber, #6 Nicole*Sisk,
#2 Meghan Bailey, #5 Jesse Kempas
and #9 Tylynn Smith also helped
put the team on the board for their
wins.
Representing Heppner High this
year are nine hard-working girls.
Returning for their second year on
varsity are seniors, Shelley
Rietm ann, Jodie Carlson, Brett
Barber, Meghan Bailey and Codi
Rosecrans, with returning junior
Lacey M atteson.
Joining the team for the first time
arejuniors, Jesse Kempas, Nicole
Sisk and Tylynn Smith. The girls
expect a great season, and look
forward to districts that are being
held here this year.
Heppnefs JV worked hard at the
tournament, leaving with a second
place spot. First place was awarded
to Riverside, third place to Mac-Hi,
fourth place to Enterprise and fifth
place to Im bler.
M ustang JV s ended the
tournament with three wins and one
loss. Heppner won against Mac-Hi,
15-8,15-12, Enterprise, 15-3,16-14,
and Imbler, 15-13, 15-10. They lost
against Riverside, 7-15, 12-15.
This year's JV team consists o f
10 players. Juniors are Genia Grant,
Rachel How ard and Marcy Miller.
Sophom ores are Blake Allstott,
Stefanie Hanson, Danielle Looslie,
Chan tea Macaulay and Brooke Rust.
Freshmen are Madison Bailey and
Shanna Rietmann.
Two C-team floaters went with
the JV this weekend, sophom ore
Danielle Prindle and freshm an
Chelsea Britt.
The C-team had their first game
o f the season on Monday, Sept. 10,
against Riverside's C-team . They
left the scene with a win, but had
to play three games to claim their
win o f the match.
The first game Heppner lost, 13-
15, but team members showed hard
work and improvement when they
came back for the next win, 15-1.
In the third and final gam e to
determine the match, they showed
com plete dom ination for a win o f
15-4.
This year's C- team has 12
players: junior Dawn DeBoer;
sophomores Lindsay Clough, Tasha
Hlavmka, Tiffany Piper, Danielle
Prindle and Sheena Shank; and
freshm en Chelsea Britt, Blair
Keithley, C ara Kennedy, Lm sey
M itchell, Elizabeth O rw ick and
Terra W ilson.
The next gam es for all three
team s are Thursday, Sept. 13,
against Riverside. The gam es will
be at Riverside, starting at 5 p.m.
Christmas invitational set
Dec. 28-30
A m eeting will be scheduled to
Blue Mountain High Five and
the Heppner Elks Lodge announce
the first H eppner C hristm as
Invitational Basketball Tournament
on Dec. 28-30.
Heppner men and women alumni
will form teams to compete against
each other and against teams from
neighboring com m unities. The
num ber o f team s invited will be
determined by the num ber o f spots
available after the Heppner teams
are formed.
The men's tournament will consist
o f an 'A' division and a 'B' division.

Players are encouraged to register
by Sunday, Sept. 30, to allow time

High Five will also be conducting
a free holiday clinic for Colt
basketball players on Dec. 26-27
preceding the tournam ent.

will go tow ards prom oting C olt
basketball and the High Five athletic
developm ental and com m unity
services program .

at the Morrow County Fairgrounds
on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 1 p.m. Rules

Marriage Licenses Area man hurt in riding accident
A locat man, David
M atheny, was seriously injured
in a horse nding accident on
Sunday, September 9, in the Pole
C reek/Potam us area.
Matheny, 53, Lexington,
was n d in g horseback in the
rem ote area with his sister and
brother-in-law, Sally and Mark
Brosnan, when the horse fell and
he was thrown. M ark Brosnan
rode out o f the area to call for
help
while
Sally
Brosnan
initiated
rescue
breathing.

Heppner Methodist to
celebrate 125th
Records show that in 1876, Rev.
J. C. Kingman, a Methodist circuit
riding preacher, was in charge o f
a circuit o f churches that included
Heppner. Since that time, services
have continued uninterrupted at the
M ethodist Episcopal church, as it
was then called, up to the present
day at the United Methodist Church
in Heppner.
This Sunday, Sept. 16, the United
Methodist Church will celebrate its
125th anniversary with a service o f
worship beginning at 10:30 a.m.,
and concluding at 12 noon with a
Creative Care

will hold its annual m eeting on
Thursday, Sept. 20, at 7:30 p.m. at
the school.
Business items include election
o f officers, enrollment report, budget
discussion, rem odeling plans and
fund raising brainstorm ing. All

There are still available slots in
both the three and four-year-old
classes, which are each held two
mornings a week. Interested persons

Departm ent, Forest Service and
O regon D epartm ent o f Forestry
personnel searched the wooded
area for several hours before

w ere able to locate the injured
man.
M atheny, who sustained
spinal injuries, was initially air­
lifted to St. Anthony Hospital in
Pendleton and then transported to
St. C harles M edical C enter in
Bend. He was listed in critical
condition M onday m orning, but
later was listed in stable
condition w ith a neck injury.

formally dedicated, and three copper
crosses, designed by local lone
artisan Mark Bruno, will be blessed
and affixed to the steeple. In addition,
an anniversary quilt depicting some
o f the history o f the church will be
