Renewed confidence in Dept, of Justice
To the Editor:
The Oregon Department of Justice
deserves high marks for their first
rate defense of Measure Seven, the
property rights measure voters
approved last November.
As the author of Measure Seven,
I was publicly very critical of the
defense, or lack of defense of
Measure Seven by the Department
o f Justice in the Marion County
Circuit Court. Under the leadership
o f then Deputy Attorney General
David Schuman, the state's defense
of Measure Seven at the trial court
level was deplorable: almost
nonexistent. It appeared the state
didn't want to win the case.
However, the Measure Seven case
is now at the supreme court level
and the state's defense of Measure
Seven is being handled by Stephanie
Strifiler and Janet Metcalf. David
Schumah is ‘no longer with the
Department of Justice. Curiously,
after losing the Measure Seven case

at the trial court level, David
Schuman was appointed to the
Oregon Court o f Appeals by Gov.
John Kitzhaber, a Measure Seven
opponent.
I have read carefully the legal
briefs the state has filed with the
Oregon Supreme Court and have
had those briefs evaluated by our
attorneys. We agree that the state
is now doing a first class job of
defending Measure Seven.
I doubt that many of the staff of
the Department of Justice are
Measure
Seven
supporters.
Nonetheless, they have approached
their responsibility to defend
Measure Seven with the level of
integrity and professionalism the
citizens of Oregon deserve. They
have given us renewed confidence
that the will of the voters will be
upheld.

Slow down, watch for kids
As
back-to-school
time
approaches, transportation officials
are reminding motorists to be alert
for children walking and riding bikes
to and from schools and bus stops.
When school resumes drivers will
see children in places where they
did not see them during the summer.
"As an adult, you have the
responsibility to be alert and avoid
injuring children," said Rick Wanng
of the ODOT Transportation Safety
Division. "Imagine seeing a child
in the street unconscious and
bleeding in front o f your car. You
don't want that to happen."
The best way to avoid such a
tragedy is simple: slow down and
be alert. Obey the posted speed in
school zones whenever children
might be present. Extracurricular
activities mean that children will
be traveling in school zones from
early morning to well into the
evening hours.
"This is not about avoiding a
ticket. This is about avoiding a
7
. .
tragedy. As drivers we need to
remember that we are the adults
driving the 3,000-pound steel
machines. We are responsible,"
Wanng said. "The vulnerable ones
are the children who are not protected
by a vehicle and who often cannot
understand
complex
traffic
situations."
