Bridge Creek fire contained
The Bridge Creek Fire near Dale
was officially contained Monday,
Aug. 20. Fire managers are
estimating control of the fire by
Thursday evening, Aug. 23. Mop-up
continues with a concerted effort
in the timbered draws of Bridge
Creek, D ay Creek and the north
slope above the mouth of Fivemile
('reek. Good progress has been made
on preparing fire trails for fall and
winter rains.
The majority of firefighters will
be released and the fire camp was
to be dismantled Wednesday
morning, Aug. 22. Approximately
60 people, six engines, two water
lenders and a dozer will remain to
make sure the area is safe and that
the fire will not cause any additional
problems.
The section of State Highway
395, between Ukiah and Dale, will
remain closed and vehicles are
required to take alternate routes.
Concern for the public's safety and
congestion from firefighting
equipment and traffic are two factors
keeping the highway closed. The
Oregon
Department
of
Transportation
(ODOT)
is
continuing clean-up efforts removing
rock, debris and other safety hazards.
ODOT estimates this section of
highway, (between mile points 50
and 65), could remain closed for
the next few days.
The detour route between U.S.
26 and Interstate 84 is as follows.
Off U.S. 26 at mile point 98 head
north on Oregon Route 19 near
Picture Gorge. Continue on Oregon
Route 19 for about 30 miles to
Oregon Route 207, two miles east
of Spray. Follow Oregon Route 207
for about 95 miles through Heppner
and Lexington to 1-84. Connect to
1-84 at mile point 182.
Resources assigned to the fire
on Aug. 21 included: four
helicopters, 15 hand crews, 12
engines, ten dozers. 14 water
tenders, and miscellaneous overhead
and camp crew members. Personnel
assigned to the fire now stands at
437.
The fire is being managed by
an Oregon Department of Forestry
Incident Command Team and is
being assisted by the US Forest
Service. Oregon Department of
Corrections, Oregon Dept, of Fish
and Wildlife, Oregon State Police.
State Fire Marshal, ODOT. Oregon
Parks and Recreation Department,
State of Missouri, State of Colorado.
Umatilla County, Columbia County.
Washington C ounty, S hen dan Rural
Fire Department and numerous
private contractors.
Good progress continues on the
Big Creek Fire, burning m the North
Fork John Day Wilderness south
of Ukiah, with the addition of two
more crews, the use o f one heavy
and two medium-sized helicopters.
This fire began as a lightning
strike on Aug. 13. By Monday, Aug.
20, the fire had burned 620 acres
and was 60 percent contained.
A total o f 255 firefighters from
around the west are working on this
fire which continues to bum in steep,
difficult terrain. On Monday, Aug.
20, one firefighter was confined
to spike camp with badly blistered
feet. But it wasn't a day off for the
firefighter who spent the time
washing socks for the entire 20-
person crew. The crew person said
they would have much preferred
to be out firefighting.
Visitors traveling on the Blue
Mountain Scenic Byway (Forest
Road 52) are cautioned that traffic
is being controlled at Blue Springs,
the entrance to fire camp and at Big
Creek, where helicopters are dipping
out of a portable tank. Travelers
can expect short delays on Forest
Road 52. Several other roads, trails,
and campgrounds in the vicinity
o f the fire are closed to public
access.
With continued favorable
weather, firefighters are optimistic
o f gaining containment on the
stubborn
blaze
