Boardman ambulance received a request for assistance O f f T h e W a l l ... Ry AAfrlyn Robinson Bv Merlyn Robinson Seize the moment! A person can be a bit "stuck up" during a sticky situation. Like a fruit fly, I honed in on nature's bounty when prolific apricot trees in Heppner began raining juicy fruit. My fruitful "apricot high" produced colorful jars, dried snacks, sticky jam and apricot cobblers. The kitchen had an orange glow with abundant fruit as my "vvaste-not" mentality contributes to waist expansion. Yet it reminds me o f when we used to process the majority o f our homegrown food fora winter's supply o f fruits and vegetables. Now we just run to the grocery store and expect to find fresh produce year around. It's called taking the easy way so there's more time to play . On the subject o f food, instead o f emphasizing a statement by say ing. "I'll eat my hat if that isn't true." that could now be rephrased to "I'll eat my shirt!" Com is now being used to produce poly lactic acid. Already being produced are shirts made o f 64 percent cotton and 36 percent corn-based poly lactic acid. Because that polymer is corn-based and not petroleum-based, they claim that fabric can be produced which is both biodegradable and compostable. So I guess ifyou get tired of washing your dirty shirts, you just throw them in the compost pile. However. I'd prefer that my jeans not disintegrate after they've acquired air conditioning holes. Many people are against further oil exploration, even in a frozen hunk of Alaska so perhaps manufacturing companies can switch from petroleum- based products to grain-based poly mers. Grain farmers, crank up those ethanol-fueled tractors and start growing more com fiber. Good news for Northwest grain producers is that an ethanol plant is under construction near St. Helens. Many o f the molecules used to make grain-based polymers are derived from the waste stream o f ethanol plants. These polymers are made when microorganisms are introduced into the starches or sugars derived through a fermentation process such as the one used to make alcohol or ethanol. Depending on what type o f process is used, different types o f fibers can be produced. Your zip-lock bags or those plastic boxes could now be produced from a renewable resource. Besides fabric, think of huge quantities of petroleum- based plastic wrap that covers many purchased items and ends up in a landfill. Perhaps the emergence of grain-based polymer products will rival the explosion of the plastic industry in the I % 0s and even contribute to the family farm survival, however corny sounding. But don't get any hopes up that this product will soon see major production. I'm sure the extreme environmentalists will find some objection to the growing ot com or the pnxJuction of polymers. Besides current energy issues, genetically engineered trees, plants and products are under attack. Aside from the impact o f endangered species listings of the sucker fish, spotted ow 1. Washington ground squirrel and salmon, the Tucson-based Center for Biological Diversity is planning to sue for an endangered listing o f the yellow-billed cuckoo. Arizona is considered a cuckoo stronghold, supposedly nothing to do with humans; however. I believe there are too many dangerous, wingless cuckoos with bird brains, walking around spewing untrue propaganda with their wide-open beaks. from Boardman for the caller's seven-year-old brother w ho had a tick on his back and couldn t get n o f f . -Boardman Police Dept, officer arrested Chaunesy l.ynn Alian. 30 lor Disorderly t onduct and on a Umatilla County Circuit Court indictment for Possession of a Controlled Substance.
