Lady Mustangs play where the pros play
On Sunday, July 8, 15 members
o f the Heppner girl's Mustang
basketball team and their coaches
traveled to Portland to play in a pre-
Ftre game at the Rose Garden
Heppner overpowered the Regis
Rams, 27-16. The Mustangs jumped
out to an early lead with very intense
defense and stayed in control the
entire game. Regis couldn't handle
Heppner's pressure defense and the
Mustangs never let up and
dominated every aspect of the game
"The girls played awesome," said
Coach Dana Reid. "They were
relaxed and having fun and it
showed."
The Portland Fire WNBA team
is in its second season and the pre
game games are a way to bring more
fans to the Rose Garden. "It was
a great opportunity for the girls to
play where the pros play. That's not
something a lot o f high school
athletes get the chance to
experience.” said Reid.
Along with the players, over 50
Heppner fans made their way to
Portland to show their support for
the team.
"Playing in the Rose Garden was
the coolest thing I've ever done in
my life.” said Meghan Bailey,
senior. "We played the best we've
played all throughout summer league
and it w as awesome to beat a good
team like Regis." Teammate Shelley
Rietmann, senior, also thought
playing in the Rose Garden was
"cool". "Playing where great players
play gives you an awesome feeling,"
she added.
Follow ing the Heppner/Regis
game, the entire group watched the
Portland Fire take on the Utah Jazz.
After leading the entire game,
Portland let Utah slip away in the
final minute . Utah beat Portland,
65-63.
"It was a great opportunity and
a great experience," said junior
Marcy Miller. "We really learned
a lot from watching them play and
it was a lot of fun."
The Rose Garden was packed
and full of excitement. The Heppner
basketball team showed their support
for Fire and in return received post
game passes to meet two of the
Portland players. Sylvia Crawley,
post player with 16 points, 10
rebounds, signed autographs for
the Mustangs to close out a fun-
filled day at the Rose Garden.
Heppner players were Blake
Allstott, Madison Bailey, Meghan
Bailey. Brett Barber, Chelsey Bntt,
Stephanie Hanson. Blair Keithley,
