Ellis, chair of the Oregon Heritage Commission, announced that the commission has awarded $250 grants to 99 Oregon museums, including the Morrow County Museum in Heppner. In making his announcement, Ellis said that the grants, while small, are regarded by recipients as very important in helping them improve museum services. He noted that many of Oregon's museums are operated by dedicated volunteers. To qualify for an Oregon Museum Grant, a museum must meet seven basic eligibility criteria: (1) to be organized as a public or private non profit institution; (2) care for and own or use tangible objects; (3) exhibit those objects to the public on a regular basis through facilities the museum owns or operates; (4) provide services to the public at a designated place and reasonable hours; (5) have been open and providing services to the public for two full years prior to the date of the grant application; (6) have a responsible, competent attendant on duty when museum services are open to the public; and (7) be open to the public for a minimum of 120 hours per year. The amount of the museum giant award is determined by dividing • the appropriation available for the year ($25,000 for 2001) by the number of qualifying institutions. This year, 104 museums applied for grants. More information about the Oregon Museum Grant program can be obtained by writing to the Oregon Heritage Commission at 1115 Commercial Street NE, Salem, OR 97301-1002, by telephoning commission staff at (503) 378-4168, ext. 299, or by e-mailing the commission at heritage.mfo@state. or.us.
