Heppner Junior High championship meet held at Umatilla
The Heppner Junior High track
championship meet was held May
11 at Umatilla, with 10 schools
participating.
Heppner eighth grade girls' team
took first place with 161 points, over
second place Columbia with 110
points.
The eighth grade boys' team
captured fifth out of the 10 schools.
The seventh grade boys' team
took fourth out o f the 10 schools
participating.
Results are as follows.
Eighth grade girls' team: Shanna
Rietmann- 100m hurdles second with
19.76, triple jump second with 30'4"
(her personal best; she also set a
new school record earlier in the year
with 30'7"), 100m first and
undefeated for the season with 13.31
(just shy of Stephanie Payne's school
record of 13.19 set in 1981), 200m
first and undefeated for the season
with 28.64; Cara Kennedy-high
jump a tie for second and third with
4’7", 100m hurdles fifth with 20.52,

BEO awards scholarships
The Bank of Eastern Oregon has
awarded $3,000 in scholarships to
deserving high school seniors in
its trade area.
Shawn Campbell, a graduate o f
Condon High School, plans to attend
the University o f Idaho and enroll
in the College of Agriculture. Shawn
was active in athletics, FFA and
FBLA in high school, as well as
4-H. Shawn was also student body
president during his senior year.
Ann Shear graduated from lone
High School Ann plans to attend
the National American University
in South Dakota and will pursue
a career in veterinarian medicine,
equine science. Ann was involved
in OSSOM and FBLA along with
4-H and Oregon High School Rodeo
Association.
Shelby Krebs is a graduate o f
lone High School. Shelby plans to
attend New Mexico State University
in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and
m ajor in hotel, restaurant and

Scott VanWinkle is a graduate
o f Heppner High School. Scott is
planning to attend University of
Idaho in Moscow, Idaho, and he
will major in land management and
business. Scott received various
academic awards for both math and
science, played varsity golf and was
involved in various community
activities,
including
the
Neighborhood Center, Ducks
Unlimited, and the Booster Club.
Lindsay Ward graduated from
Heppner High School. Lindsay will
be attending Montana State
University and plans to major in
accounting. Lindsay served as
student body president this past year,
was involved in OSSOM, Wlldhorse
Club, National Honor Society and
Outdoor Club. She is also involved
in many community activities,
including the Heppner Chamber
o f Commerce Board. She also
developed a Christmas gift program
that was very widely used and
appreciated.
Krista Adams is a graduate of
Heppner High School. Krista plans
to attend Boise State University in
Boise, Idaho, where she will major
in business and minor in visual arts,
with an emphasis in photography.
Krista was busy with 4-H, Outdoor
Club, National Honor Society,
Wildhorse Club and Spanish Club,
athletic
endeavors,
student
governm ent and community
volunteer work.
The Bank o f Eastern Oregon's
scholarships are open to graduating
seniors from Riverside, Arlington,
Condon, Spray, Wheeler County,
Heppner and lone high schools.
There were no applicants this year
from Riverside, Arlington, Wheeler
County or Spray high schools.

On Sunday the 13th, I was on
one o f my sight-seeing trips. I had
just come o ff o f Hardman Ridge
and came down on the highway
when I came up on a cattle drive.
My reason for being on the ride
was to take photos and I thought,
wow, here you go.
So just as I was going to reach
for my camera, one o f the gals on
her horse rode up and told me that
I had a flat tire and she also of­
fered to have someone help me
change it. In a m atter o f a few
minutes she got on her radio and
a father and son came and helped
me get the tire changed.
I just want to say thank you
again to these wonderful people
who already had enough to do
m oving th eir herd to sum m er
ground, but took the time to help
som eone out. W hat great folks
you are. Thank you from the bot­
tom o f my heart.
