Mustangs end season

The second-ranked Warrenton
W arriors took advantage o f six
walks and two errors to beat the
1 leppner Mustangs, 9-7, in the first
round o f the OSAA Class 2A
baseball state cham pionship on
Friday, May 25, in Warrenton. ITie
M ustangs finished a fine season
w ith a 20-7-1 record and return the
entire team next year as there were
no seniors on the team.
ITie Warriors followed a walk
with a home run in the second inning
and scored another on two singles
in the third to take a 3-0 lead.
Brad Adams hit a solo home run
in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-1,
but the Warriors came right back
with a home run following a walk
in the bottom half to make it 5-1.
In the top o f the fifth, Luke
Murray and CTiuy Elguezabal walked
and Stefan M atheny was hit by a
pitch to load the bases for Michael
McCabe who hit a grand slam home
run to tie the game at 5-5.
Ehe game stayed that way until
the bottom o f the sixth when the
W arriors hit another home run
follow ing a walk and scored a run
on a wild pitch and an error after
two more walks to take a 9-5 lead.
The game was seemingly over
when McCabe reached second on
a two-out throwing error and scored
on a Billy Gates' single. Adams
doubled and Kelly Paullus singled
home Gates to make it 9-7 with the
lone holds spring awards program
tying run at first, but the rally ended
there.
McCabe went two for four with
four RBIs and Adams went two for
four with a double and a home run.

Garden Club
The Heppner Garden Club will
meet Monday, June 4, at 6:30 p.m.
at St. Patrick's Senior C enter for
installation o f new officers for two
years.
President is Chuck Bailey; vice
president is JoAnn Burleson;
treasurer, Bebe M unkers; and
secretary, Eleanor Gonty.
The club will share ideas about
programs for the coming year and
members will sign up as hostesses
for the monthly club meeting.
Club members have been busy
planting at the mini park on main
street, the planters in front o f the
senior center and at the fair grounds.
One o f the members is waters the
plants daily.
The club welcomes newcomers
as well as oldcomers too. It is open
to the public and meets the first
Monday o f the month at St. Patrick's
Senior Center at 6:30 p.m.
Wedding
Munkers - Greenup
Tiffanie and Travis Greenup
Tiffame Munkers o f Lexington and Travis Greenup o f lone were
married January 13,2001. in a double-rmg ceremony at the United Church
o f Christ in lone.
The Reverend Paul Clay perform ed the ceremony.
The bnde is the daughter of Barry and Mary Ann Munkers of Lexington
and granddaughter o f Rocky and Juanita Proctor o f Im gon and Leonard
and the late Edith Munkers o f Lexington. The groom is the son o f Bill
and Cindy Greenup o f Lexington and grandson o f Herb and Nancy
Ekstrom o f lone and Don and the late Colleen Greenup o f Heppner.
The bride was given in m arriage by her father.
Maid o f honor was Angela Munkers o f Lexington, sister o f the bnde.
Bridesmaids were Katie Garthwaite o f Merritt, B.C., Canada, Crystal
Bonds o f Altus, OK, Sara Greenup o f Heppner, Casey Seeger o f Echo
and Cara Gover o f Benton City, WA.
Best man was Truitt Greenup o f Chandler, AZ, brother o f the groom.
Groomsmen were Jason Hanna, Tim Hedman, Rob Ashbeck and Tony
Greenup, brother o f the groom, all o f Heppner, and Jimmy Walton o f
Long Creek.
Candlelighters were Josie.and Roy Proctor o f Heppner. cousins o f
the bnde. Flower girls were Blake Greenup of lone, daughter o f the groom,
and Jaycie Clucas o f Umatilla, cousin o f the bnde. Ring bearer was Cole
Clucas o f Umatilla, cousin o f the bnde. Musicians included harpist Amy
Jepsen o f lone, guitarist David Bates o f Heppner and soloist Angela
Munkers. Assisting at the guest book were Kay and Julie Proctor o f Heppner.
Videographer w as Ginger Bowman and photographers were Sandy Mathews
and Judy Barber.
The bride wore a princess-style designer gown with a long train.
The dress was made of white silk accented w ith pearls and lace throughout.
She wore a double-tiered fingertip length veil attached to a small headpiece
of pearls and sequins. A delicate arrangement of pearls covered the veil.
She carried a large cascading bouquet consisting o f frosted roses, w hite
lilies and ivy designed and created by Julie Ashbeck o f Echo.
The reception and dance following the wedding, attended by
approximately 700 friends and family members, was held at the lone
Legion Hall. It was decorated with western table decorations made of
horseshoes, candles and dried flower arrangements as well as artificial
lighting and ornamental trees set throughout. A dinner o f pit barbecue
pig was served as well as a AVi tall western wedding cake designed and
created by Erancine Evans o f Im gon, cousin o f the bride. It consisted
o f five flavors and was decorated with flowers, horseshoes, barbed w ire
and a lighted water fountain Punch servers were Anne Munkers of Hermiston
and C hristine Laws o f Orofino, ID, aunts o f the bride.
The couple honeymooned in C ancún. Mexico, and now reside in
lone w here the groom is a self-employed custom applicator for Greenup
Custom Spraying and the bride is a special-ed instructor for Morrow
County Schools.

lone High School held its spring
sports and academic aw ards program
Tuesday, May 22, at the school
cafeteria.
Athletic director Dean Robinson
started the evening by thanking the
individuals who had supported the
students throughout the year by
volunteering their time. He then
introduced Sheldon Pratt o f the
Dairy Farmers o f Oregon, who
presented pins to the boys' basketball
team for placing in the top 10
academically in the state with a 3.69
GPA. The girls' tennis team received
pins and "Got Milk?" sweatshirts
for being the top academic tennis
team in the state with a 3.94 GPA.

Robinson gave out Big Sky
Academic Awards. A student must
have at least a 3.5 GPA for seven
sem esters and have at least five'
varsity letters, two o f which have
to be Big Sky.
Students receiving awards were
Jeremy Rietmann, Cory Bennetto.
Molly Barrow'. Allison Halvorsen,
Jennifer Thom pson. Adrienne
Swanson. Jerem iah McElligott,
Shelby Krebs, Aaron Brown and
Charissa Gates. The same students
were also honored with Oregon
Scholar Athlete certificates for
having at least a 3.5 GPA and
lettering in one varsity sport.
The 19 tennis team members were
honored by coach Cathy McCabe
and assistant Charity McElligott.
ITie "Tennis the Menace" Award
for frustrating her opponents went
to Sheena Christman. Paul Neiffer
and Billy Ross received the Most
Improved Player Awards.
Coach Del LaRue and assistant
Ryan Rudolf presented track letters.
The boys were recognized for their
first place finish at the district meet
and their second place finish at state.
The girls were honored for finishing
second at the district meet and, with
only four girls competing, placing
second at state.
The following science awards
were presented by teacher Duane
Neiffer: Biology-Caitlin Orem,
Stream Restoration Program- Shelby
Krebs and Allison Halvorsen,
Chem istry-Kristina
Powell,
Outstanding Science- Jeremiah
McElligott.
Conditioning class awards went
to Karl Morgan. Jeff Hunt, and Paul
Neiffer.
Dale Holland, math teacher, gave
the following awards:

Improved-Brad Bumght. Integrated
III-Caitlin Orem and Kristina
Powell, Calculus-Cory Bennetto,
Outstanding Math Student- Jeremiah
McElligott.
International Club pins were
presented by advisor Ryan Rudolf
He also recognized Sheena
Christman, who got second place
statewide in the Holocaust Senior
W riting Contest and won $200.
Gary Hunt presented health and
tech ed awards: Outstanding Health
Student- Caitlm Orem and Meghan
McCabe. Snow Day- Mike Radie,
Technology Well Rounded Student-
Cyd Tullis, Technology Problem
Solver- Billy Ross.
Drama teacher Jim Raible
presented awards to Cyndi Heagy,
Molly Barrow and Cory Bennetto.
The Most Improved Student
Award in music was presented by
Darlene Marquardt to Koby Rea.
She also presented the following
business awards: Most Improved
in Web Design- Brian Gutierrez,
Most Creative in Web Design- Koby
Rea. Most Rapid Advancement-
Andrew Rietmann, Computer
Applications- Sheena Christman.
Most Inquisitive- Aaron Tworek.

Awards were given to individuals
who placed in the BMCC Skill
Contest. Academic letters were
awarded to students who had a 3.8
or higher GPA for the second
sem ester o f 2000 and the fall
sem ester this year.

The Citizenship Award, voted
on by lone High School staff, went
to Molly Barrow and Jeremiah
McElligott.
