Kate Kendrick spent her birthday
taking a test. But it didn't bother
the Heppner Elementary School
fifth grader. She tied for first place
in Division 1 of the district's spelling
contest, held May 17 at Columbia

District students competed in
three divisions. Each division's 30
word written test was given by a
teacher, then graded by a group of
correctors. The students and their
families had punch and cinnamon
rolls while they waited for the
results.
Recognitions were given through
sixth place, but there were numerous
ties for places within each division.
