The Mustangs fell to Culver in

double for the Mustangs' other hit.
The Rockets took a 1 -0 lead in
the first, but the Mustangs turned

as Chuy Elguezabal led off with
a single and came around to score
on a passed ball as Matheny singled.

field for a 3-1 lead. Brad Adams
and Kelly Paullus walked, Donald
Adams had an RBI double and Luke

third as Travis Bellamy led off with
a double, Kiel Naims walked and
Murray sacrificed Bellamy home.
Elguezabal reached on an error as
Naims scored and Matheny had an
RBI double. McCabe doubled. Gates

H eppner, lon e kids ’rough it’ at outdoor school
By Debbie Harper
"Great," "awesome," "cool,”
"tiring" were some of the words
returning HES sixth graders used
to describe their week at Outdoor
School.
This year 32 kids from Heppner
and six kids from lone attended
Outdoor School at Tupper.
For four days they lived in cabins
they cleaned themselves. Classes
were held outdoors. Instead of
watching television and playing
video games in the evenings, they
sang songs around the campfire.
Patriotic songs, familiar songs, even
songs made up by the campers
themselves. Every evening they had
a flag ceremony and taps. Glen Ward
taught them how to fold and handle
a flag.
Even with rain and bad weather
the first couple of evenings, kids
took night hikes and played games
with their counselors.
Phyllis Danielson, principal of
Heppner Elementary School, feels
the sixth graders learn some valuable
lessons through their experiences
at Tupper. "They learn responsibility
in a safe environment. Helping with
chores and living in nature boosts
their self esteem and their self
respect."
In addition to the four main staff
people. Dean Robinson, Karen
Smith-Griffith, Jannie Allen and
Kay Alldntt, lots of people come
up and help each year.
Gary Hunt from lone High School
taught a weather class. Glen Ward
taught classes about wild life. Brian
Spivey and Keith Hanson gave
archery lessons in the evening.
Clint Krebs took the students
on a nature hike and taught them
about wildflowers. Krebs's family
collects wildflower specimens and
he said he'd buy milkshakes for kids
if they could find wildflowers that
he wasn't able to identify. There
were several.
Clint's son Cameron was a first
time counselor from lone High
School. A sophomore, he was the
youngest counselor this year "I liked
helping the kids. They were coming
asking me questions, trusting my
advice, trusting my answers. You
realize you have to be responsible
and grown up."
Cameron also helped with ¿he
wildflower identification "They
collected several flowers we didn't
identify up there. We're still working
on identifying them."
On Wednesday they went to Bull
Prairie. They made fishing poles
out of willow branches. Some kids
even caught fish using their poles.
A favorite class was outdoor
survival, taught by Randy Rayburn.
Groups of five to six students were
given 30 minutes to build a shelter
from what they'd brought with them
in their survival kits and what was
available in the environment.

counselor than as a kid going,
because 1 got to meet all the kids,
to work with all of them."
