Ione doubles team takes
second in district

held in Eugene Friday and Saturday, May 18-19. Their first game
will be Friday at 11:30 a.m.
Seeded as number six going into
the district tournament, the doubles
team of Adam McCabe and Adam
Neiffer upset the District 3, 1A-3A
tennis brackets by claiming second
place at the single elimination
tournament this past weekend.
In
the
first
round,
McCabe/Neiffer defeated Craig
Gribble and Jeremy Hall of
Riverside High School in two sets.
6-1, 6-4. The duo o f Adams then
advanced to play against the number
three-seeded team from Mac Hi,
Murco Felix and Daniel Christian,
defeating their opponents 6-4,6-3.
The lone team then flabbergasted
the number-two seed, Umatilla's
Adrian Palamino and Paul Valle,
by taking them into three sets to
post a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 win.
McCabe/Neifler then played against
the number-one seeded Umatilla
team of Jose Apancio and Robert
Gray, losing their match and settling
for second place.
Coach Cathy McCabe was
pleased with McCabe and Neiffer's
performance. "These two played
their best match o f the entire year
against Valle/Palamino ofUmati 11a.
They have been capable of this level
o f play all year long."
In other boys' action, Billy Ross
lost to Bill Routson o f Umatilla,
0-8. Colin McElligott lost his match
against Ben Schwarz of Helix, 2-6,
0-0. Aaron Brown easily defeated
. Cameron Sanders of Riverside High
School, 8-2. Brown then defeated
Israel Sanchez of Mac Hi, 6-2,6-3.
i Brown then lost his quarterfinal
match against Cole Shelton of
Sherman County, 2-6,0-6. Shelton
advanced on to claim the boy's
singles' title.
The doubles' team of Cameron
Krebs and Jeff Hunt won their first
match against Justin Griffin and
Josh Hubbard from Mac Hi, 8-2.
Krebs/Hunt then played against the
number one seeded Apancio/Gray
o f Umatilla, 1-6, 0-6. Derek
Campbell and Aaron Tworek
defeated Bud Drummond and Blake
Dennley o f Arlington, 6-3, 6-3.
In the girls' singles' bracket,
Caitlin Orem easily defeated Stacie
Garcia o f Echo. Orem's match
against Garcia started out as a
slugfest but Orem pulled away to
post a 8-4 win. Orem then fought
a long, hard match against Mac Hi's
Heather Harding. Orem's two-and-a
half -hour match took Harding into
three sets, 6-4 in set one, 6-7, with
a tie breaker score of 4-7 in set two,
and the third set with a score of 2-6.
Sheena Christman posted a 8-1 win
against Kellie Davis of Stanfield
and then advanced to play against
Yuko Ueno o f Riverside High
School, losing 0-0, 0-6.
The doubles' team o f Salli
McElligott and Emily Key lost their
match against Stanfield's Cherilyn
Spencer and Emily Marcum, 3-6,
2-6. Shelby Krebs and Allison
Halvorsen easily defeated Meghan
Johns and Mayra Saucedo of Weston
McEwen, 8-1. Krebs/Halvorsen then
sparred against Katie Ketchum and
Codie Stroud of Sherman County,
losing that match, 3-6, 1-6.

McCabe overwhelmed their
Sherman County opponents,
defeating Enn Weedman and April
Olson, 8-3. Barrow/ McCabe lost
their following match against
Nichole Jamieson and K'Lynn
Kennedy o f Condon, 3-6, 1 -6.
Area student
awarded
scholarship
Key Technology, Inc. has
awarded its 2001 scholarship to Wes
Haynes, a 2001 graduate of
Hermiston High School in
Hermiston. Haynes, a former
Heppne resident, will study
engineering at Willamette Uni versity
in Salem. The Key Technology
Scholarship will contribute $ 1,500
per year for four years, subject to
renewal each year, toward Haynes'
education.
Eligibility requirements state
that the scholarship be awarded to
a high school senior who resides
in either Walla Walla or Umatilla
County and has plans to major in
engineering or electronics.
Key Technology awards this
scholarship to one student on an
annual basis. Interested seniors
graduating in 2002 should contact
their high school counseling office.
The scholarship is administered by
the Oregon Student Assistance
Commission.

Condon taking six matches.
Caitlin Orem lost to Taunia
Trotter, 1 -8. Shelby Krebs was down
0-5 but came back before she was
defeated by Breana Anderson, 4-8.
Sheena Christman was beaten by
Tessa Nicholson, 0-8. Meghan
McCabe was unable to get a lead
on Maggie Barnett, losing her match
6 - 8 .

to the Pirates 3-4 and the lone
women won with a 3-2 win.
In men's singles' action, Aaron
Brown lost to Shawn McKimmey,
1 -8. Colin McElligott was handed
a 6-8 loss by Cody Bowline. Billy
Ross was defeated by Brian Bunch,
4-8. In doubles, the team of Adam
McCabe and Adam Neiffer defeated
Craig Gnbble and Jeremy Hall, 8-5.
Derek Campbell and Aaron Tworek
conquered Israel Carillo and Matt
Weseman, 8-5. Jeff Hunt and
Cameron Krebs was handed a 3-8
loss by Rafal Trzepanowski and
Cameron Sanders. The freshman
doubles duo o f Paul Neiffer and
Johnny Collin posted a 8-3 win
against Jason Imus and Kns Smith.
In girls' singles' action, Caitlin

The lone boys track team took
home the gold at the Big Sky Track
District meet held in Hermiston on
May 11-12. TheCardinals finished
in first with a total o f 158 points,
with Wasco County taking second
with a total of 120 points.
Brad Bumght finished first in
the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.55,
first in the 300 hurdles with a time
o f42.83 and first in the long jump
with a jump of 20'-IV«".
Andrew Rietmann took first in
the 100m with a time of 11.56, first
in the 200m with a time of 23.34
and second in the triple jump with
a jump of 38-6.
The 400m relay team of Mike
Radie, Andrew Rietmann, Korey
Morgan and Brooks Rea finished
first with a time of 45.97. Brooks
Rea also took second in the high
jump with a jump of 5-10, second
in the pole vault with a jump of 9-6.
and third in the 100m with a time
o f 12.01.
Mike Radie placed second in the
200m with a time of 24.81 and
fourth in the 100m with a time of
12.37. Korey Morgan finished third
in the triple jump with a jump of
38-4, third in the 110 hurdles with
a time of 19.57 and third in the 300
hurdles with a time of 48.10.
Jeremy Rietmann finished fourth
in the 400m with a time o f 55.75
and fifth in the 200m with a time
of 25.47. Til Tullis placed fifth in
the 300 hurdles with a time of 50.84
The 1600m relay team of Til Tullis,
Jeremy Rietmann, Cody Bergstrom
and Mike Radie finished fourth with
a time of 4:19.6.
Corey Bennetto finished second
in the discus with a toss of 127-4,
fourth in the shot put with a throw
o f 39-8 and fourth in the javelin
with a throw of 154-5. Cayle Krebs
finished fifth in the discus with a
throw of 117-9 and fifth in the shot
put.
The lone girls' team finished
second at district with a total of 126
points, despite only having five girls
on the team. They were runners up
to Wasco County, who had 133
points.
The Lady Cardinals were led by
Diana McElligott who finished first
in the 100m with a time of 13.19,
first in the 200m with a time of
27.23 and first in the 400m with
a time o f 1:00.64.
Natalie McElligott also took three
first places. She finished first in the
high jump with a jump of 4-10, first
in the triple jump with a jump of
33-3 and first in the long jump with

Amellia Peck took first place
in the 300 hurdles with a time of
51.84, first in the 100 hurdles with
a time of 17.6 and second in the

with a time of 51.87.
Jaysi Bennetto placed third in
