Four Heppner High School track
athletes qualified for the state 2A
track and field meet at Monmouth
this coming weekend as a result of
the district meet last weekend in
Hermiston.
David Piper set a district record
in the high jump at 6' 8" to win that
event and also won the long jump
to pace the HHS thinclads. He also
was third in the 200 meter dash and
anchored the 1600-meter relay team
to fifth.
Stephanie Dyer was the lone girl
qualifier by placing second in the
shot put with a throw of 33' 8'/»".
Other qualifiers were Craig Scott
in the triple jump and Sam VanLiew
in the high hurdles. VanLiew edged
out teammate Scott by one one-
hundredth of a second to claim the
second place finish.
Fully-automatic-timing was used
for the first time at the District 7
2A track meet and it proved to be
very decisive in determining several
tight races.
Freshman distance runner Brooke
Rust had an outstanding meet by
capturing fourth place in the 3.000-
meter run and fifth in the 1500-meter
run. Her time of 12:15.05 at 3.000
meters was the sixth fastest time
ever at HHS and her 5:40.61 at
1500-meter ranks ninth all-time.
She also anchored the 1600-relay
team to fourth Other relay members
were Stefame Hanson. Paula
Spicerkuhn and Tiffany Piper.
Hanson high jumped to a 4' 10"
mark for third place, barely missing
out on a state trip. Her mark ties
her for seventh all-time at HHS.
Tiffany Piper set a personal
record in the triple jump with a leap
o f 29' 2” for sixth at district and
seventh best at HHS. She was third
in the 800 with a 2:40.92
On the boys' side. Scott had a
tough day, finishing third in 300-
meter hurdles with a 44.26 time,
below his season's best of 43.6
He also ran on the 1600-meter relay
team to a fifth-place finish along
with VanLiew, Daniel Jepsen and
Piper.
Senior Chris Peck came up with
a pair of season's best throws in the
shot put and discus. He threw the
shot 42' 8" good for fourth and 10th
all-time at HHS Peck improved
to 111' 6” in the discus for sixth

Rust teamed w ith Jepsen. VanLiew
and Peck to place fifth in the 400-
meter relay.
Spicerkuhn failed to place in
either the 1500 and 3.000 meters
and sophomore Dawn DeBoer did
not get into the finals of either spnnt
race.
Not competing in district was
Brett Barber w ho suffered a season
ending injury two weeks before

quite well with a triple jump best
of 29' 9'-22" which ranks her fourth
all-time at HHS. She also had run
: 13.6 for 100 meters and long
jumped 13' 8"/a".
Head coach Dale Conklin is
optimistic the Mustangs will score
points at state as David Piper is
favored to win the high jump and
has leaped 20' 6" in the long jump
