Ione track teams compete
at Cascade Locks

The lone boys' and girls' truck
teams competed at the Cascade
Locks Invitational in Hood River
on Friday, April 27. The boys placed
second with a overall score o f 77,
while the girls finished third with
a total o f 52 points.
The boys were led by Andrew
Rietmann who took first in the 100m
with a time o f 11.35 and first in the
200m with a time o f 23.25. He also
finished second in the triplejum p
The 400m relay team o f Mike
Radie, Korey Morgan, Brooks Rea
and Andrew Rietmann finished in
second place. Brooks Rea also
finished fourth in the 100m. sixth
in the 200m and third in the high
jum p.
Brad Burfight finished first in
the 300m hurdles w ith a time of
42.91 Jeremiah McElligott finished
sixth in the 3000m run. Corey
Bennetto took fifth in the shot put.
third in the discus and third in the
javelin. Cayle Krebs finished sixth
in the discus.
For the girls' team. Natalie
McElligott took first place in the
long jum p with a jump o f 14-5 and
also won the highjump with a jump
of 4-10. She also finished fifth in
the triple jum p.
Diana McElligott finished first
in the 200m with a time o f 2 8 .14.
She also took second in the 100m
and second in the 400m. Jaysi
Bennetto placed fourth in the 100m
hurdles.
Commission seeks grant proposals
The Morrow County Commission
on Children and Families is seeking
new com m unity developm ent
proposals for the April-June 2001
quarter.
Approximately
$1.390
is
available this quarter. O f this
amount $1,616 is available in the
child care developm ent funds to
assist registered child care providers.
An additional $986 is available for
other general purposes. The
m aximum per grant is $500.
Examples
o f com m unity
development fund requests include
seasonal program needs; small
capital expenditures (except for
private property); service program
staff training, one-time events and
pilot projects.
The deadline for these proposals
is Tuesday. May 22. Proposals must
be in the commission office by 5
p.m. The proposals will be awarded
approximately June 5. Applications
are available at the commission
office at 120 South Main in Heppner
or by calling 676-9675.
The Community Development
Fund was established for anticipated
yet unidentified community needs
and to leverage other funds and
resources into services, advocacy
and projects for the children, youth
and families o f Morrow County.

it 3-0.
Die Blue Devils scored two runs
in the top o f the second, but the
Mustangs came back with four in
the bottom half as Murray walked.
Josh Winters reached on an error
and Matheny beat out an infield
single. McCabe forced home a run
w ith a walk and Paullus brought
home two more with a single.
McCabe then stole home as Paullus
got into a rundown and the Mustangs
led 7-2.
It stayed that way until the top
of the fifth when the Blue Devils
scored two to get within 7-4 and
took the lead tn the sixth at 8-7.
McCabe hit a homerun in the
bottom o f the seventh to tie it and
send it to extra innings, setting up
the dramatic finish.
Elguezabal picked up the win
in relief o f M atheny.
McCabe led the way at the plate
again, going three for three with
a homerun. three RBIs and scoring
three runs. Paullus went three for
four with a double and four RBIs.
M atheny went two for four and
scored twice.

Luke Murray scored the winning
run on a C'huy Elguezabal two-out
single to give the Heppner Mustangs
a 9-8 win in eight innings and
complete a sweep o f the visiting
Condon Blue Devils on Saturday.
May 5. The Mustangs banged out
seven extra base hits in the first
game to take a 15-4 win in five
innings in the first game.
The wins give the first place
Mustangs a 10 and l record in the
Columbia Basin Conference f ast
Division and a 16-4-1 overall record.
The Mustangs play at Pilot Rock
in a key doubleheader for first place
in the CBC Hast on Friday, May
11, beginning at 2 p.m.
In the first game, Condon took
a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but
the Mustangs came back with four
o f their own as Stefan Mathcnv
reached on a fielder's choice,
Michael McCabe had an RBI double.
Kelly Paullus walked. Brad Adams
had a two-RBI double and Travis
Bellamy, an RBI single
In the second. Matheny singled.
McCabe reached on an error and
Billy Gates scored both with a
double, but the Blue Devils came
back with two runs in the third to
get to within 6-4.
In the fourth, Chuy Flguezabal
reached on a fielder's choice and
scored on Matheny's triple. McCabe
had an RBI double. Gates reached
on an error and Paullus hit a three-
run homerun. Brad Adams doubled
and scored on Bellamy's single to
make it 12-4.
The Mustangs ended the game
in the fifth as Elguezabal reached
on an error, M atheny walked and
McCabe hit a homerun to make it
15-4.
McCabe went the distance,
striking out nine, walking three and
scattering six hits to get the win.
He went three for four with a double
and a homerun. had five RBIs and

A five-run first inning helped
the Heppner Mustang baseball team
beat the Umatilla Vikings, 13-4.
on Tuesday, May 1, in Umatilla.
The win improved the first place

overall record to 12-4-1.
Chuy Elguezabal led off by
getting hit by a pitch. Stefan
Matheny singled and Michael
McCabe walked to load the bases.
Kelly Paullus had an RBI single
and Brad Adams brought two more
home with a double. Travis Bellamy
had an RBI single and another run
scored on an error to make it 5-0.
The Mustangs added two more
in the second as Elguezabal singled
and scored on a Billy Gates single,
while Gates later scored on a passed
ball.
The Vikings scored three in the
bottom half, but the Mustangs came
back with two more in the third to
make it 9-3. Bellamy walked, stole
second and scored on a Donald
The first weekend in May brought
a break in Oregon High School
Rodeo action. Several area youth
are doing well in the standings and
are looking forw ard to the final six
rodeos o f the regular season. The
top 20 in each event w ill qualify
for the state finals in Redmond on
June 12-16.

in breakaway roping and 22nd in
pole bending. She has teamed with
Meghan Bailey. Heppner. for 24th
in the team roping. Bailey is also
19th in breakaway roping
