Firewood permits
available May 1
Personal-use firewood permits
will be available May 1, for
woodcutting on the Umatilla
National Forest, according to Jeff
Blackwood, forest supervisor.
Firewood cutting areas on the
North Fork John Day, Heppner,
Walla Walla and Pomeroy districts
open May 1, though many areas
at higher elevations or on northern
exposures may not be accessible
until later this spring.
The cost of firewood permits will
remain at $5 per cord with a
minimum purchase of two cords
for $10. A maximum purchase of
10 cords total from National Forest
lands is allowed during the calendar
year.
"We're encouraging people to
cut their firewood early to avoid
possible late summer closures," said
Blackwood. Over the last few years,
parts of July, August and September
were closed to woodcutting due to
severe fire danger. "With drought
conditions in the forecast we could
be looking at similar firewood
cutting closures for this year," he
said.
Permits are available at all
Umatilla National Forest offices.
Permits will also be available at
the Chevron station in Heppner,
Mentzer and Elliott in Pilot Rock,
Smitty's Ace Hardware in
Hermiston, Dean’s Market and Deli
in Pendleton, Rhode’s Supply and
Granny's Store in Ukiah, and the
Dale Store in Dale (some vendors
may not be set up to sell permits
until mid-May).
