Shirley Lucille Blake
Heppner native Shirley Lucille
Blake, 78, of Salem, died Monday,
April 2, 2001, at Salem.
Private family services were
held Friday, April 6, 2001, at
Willamette National Cemetery in
Portland.
Mrs. Blake was bom June 2,
1922, at Heppner, to David and
Lucille Elder Wilson.
On July 3, 1942, she married
Willard Blake. Mr. Blake died
February 4, 1989.
Mrs. Blake had been employed
as office manager for Dr. Wolff
and administrator assistant at
Pioneer Memorial Hospital in
Heppner. She was later office
manager for White Poultry in
Portland and then secretary for the
History Department at Western
Oregon University in Monmouth.
She was a member of the
Episcopal Church.
Mrs. Blake enjoyed knitting and
playing bridge.
Survivors
include
her
daughters, Bev Fitzgerald of
Salem; Barbara Teachout of
Livingston, Montana, Jennifer
Weaver o f Pinehurst, North
Carolina, Karen Kreder of
Jefferson, and Kathy Ross o f Lake
Oswego; a sister, Dorotha Barratt
Knecht o f Corvallis; eight
grandchildren and three great­
grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be
made to St. Hilda's Episcopal
Church in Monmouth or the
Willamette Valley Hospice.
Keizer Funeral Chapel was in
charge o f arrangements.
Alma Devin Clouston
Heppner native Alma Devin
Clouston, 99, o f Salem, died
Saturday, April 7, 2001, at her
home in Lancaster Woods, at
Salem.
A private celebration o f life
service will be held with private
interment.
Mrs. Clouston was bom
November 25, 1901, at Heppner,
to pioneers, S.B. and Sylva Shaner
Devin.
She was employed as a
telephone operator prior to her
marriage to John Clouston on
November 22, 1926, at Heppner.
The couple lived at Pendleton and
Lakeview before Mr. Clouston
was transferred to Portland in
1952. Mrs. Clouston moved to
Salem in 1997.
Mrs.
Clouston
was
a
homemaker and was active in
community affairs at Pendleton
and Lakeview, where her husband
was employed by the U.S. Forest
Service. She was also an active
volunteer and member of the
Episcopal Church.
She had a lifelong interest in
the study of birds and gardening
and had traveled extensively.
Her husband, John Clouston,
preceded her in death. Survivors
include daughters, Louise Vogler
of Boulder, Colorado and Jean
Cahill o f
Salem;
seven
grandchildren and eight great­
grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be
made to the Willamette Valley
Hospice or the William Temple
House in Portland.
Restlawn Funeral Home of
Salem was in charge of
arrangements.

Mrs. Schmidt was bom August
15, 1907, at Logan, North Dakota,
to John C. and Barbara Huether
Gellner.
On October 8, 1927, she
married Edward Schmidt at
Mobray, Manitoba, Canada. They
lived at Isabel, South Dakota, until
1935, when they moved to Idaho.
They lived at Hayden Lake, Priest
Lake, Coeur d'Alene and Boise in
Idaho, and at Heppner and
Pendleton before moving to
Lewiston, Washington in 1960.
Mrs. Schmidt worked at Fuch's
Flower and Garden Center and
Smith's Garden Square.
She was a member of the
Orchards Community Church.
Survivors include her children,
Evelyn DeClark of Cornelius, E.
Robert Schmidt o f Lewiston,
Washington
and
Jacqueline
Allstott
of
Heppner;

grandchildren;

grandchildren.

Christine Schmidt, 93, former
resident
of
Heppner
and
Pendleton, died Saturday, April 7,
2001, at Tri-state Health and
Rehabilitation Center in Clarkston,
Washington.

away. Kiel Naims walked,
Elguezabal singled and Matheny
hit a two RBI double. McCabe
then hit his second two-run
homerun of the game, followed by
Adams' solo homerun. Kelly
Paullus was hit by a pitch and
scored on a Travis Bellamy double
to make it 12-3.
The Rangers added a run in the
seventh, but it was a little too late.
Adams came on in relief in the
third and pitched three innings,
allowing just one run to pick up
the win.
Matheny went four for four
with two doubles and four RBIs.
McCabe went two for four with
two homeruns and four RBIs.
Adams was two for four with a
double, a homerun and two RBIs.

Mustang JVs sweep LaGrande

The Heppner Mustang JV
baseball team improved to 5-0 by
sweeping the visiting LaGrande
Tiger freshmen, 11-1, in five
innings and winning the second
game, 7-3, in the cold and rain on
Friday, April 6.
In the first game, the Mustangs
put three runs on the board as Kiel
Naims walked and scored on a
Brian Gutierrez single. Gutierrez
later scored on a passed ball. Kyler
Lovgren walked and later scored
on a passed ball to make it 3-0.
The Mustangs made it 4-0 as
Koby Rea was hit by a pitch, stole
second and third and scored on
another Gutierrez single.
The Tigers made it 4-1 in the
top of the fourth, but the Mustangs
came back with two of their own
as Rea walked, stole second and
third and scored on a Gutierrez
double. Donald Adams then
singled to bring home Gutierrez
and make it 6-1.
The Mustangs ended the game
in the fifth as Trevor Rhea walked
and came home on a Karl Morgan
triple. Conor Kilkenny walked.
Rea had an RBI single, Naims and
Gutierrez each had RBI singled
and, after Adams walked, Lovgren
walked with the bases loaded to
make it I l-l and end the game on
the 10-run rule.
Adams went four innings,
striking out five and allowing just
three hits and walking none to pick
up the win. Gutierrez pitched a
perfect fifth in relief.
Morrow County District
Attorney David C. Allen has
released the following report:
Huber Landeros Senior
plead guilty to three counts of
Assault 4. He was sentenced to
180 days in the Umatilla County
Jail, with approval for the
electronic survel lance program for
180 days, 36 months formal
probation and 80 hours of
community service. He was also
ordered to complete an alcohol
treatment program, a domestic
violence treatment program and
have no contact with the victim or
her children unless approved by
the treatment provider and
probation officer. He was ordered
to pay $1,677 in fines, fees and
assessments.
Joseph L. LaChapelle was
found to be in violation of
probation for Assault 3 and
Conspiracy to Commit Theft I. He
ws sentenced to 30 days in jail and
his probation was extended for 18
months
Matthew Ned Clark plead
guilty to Assault 4 and was
sentenced *to 120 days in jail,
suspended on the condition that he
complete all conditions of
probation, and 24 months
probation. He was also ordered to

Monies are still available
to local merchants through the
downtown renovation project,
according to George Koffler,
president of the Bank of Eastern
Oregon.
Koffler said that local
businesses may apply for loans to
improve the facades of their
buildings. Additionally, the five
percent interest on the loans will
be paid by the city of Heppner
through an Oregon Economic
Development Department grant.
Koffler said that $60,000
is remaining in the fund. Loans
can be up to $ 10,000 with a four-
year maximum term. The loans
may be used for painting,
windows, awnings and other
improvements to the exterior of
the buildings.

M ustangs pound out win

The Heppner Mustang baseball
team pounded out 12 hits,
including five doubles and three
homeruns, to beat the visiting
Dufiir Rangers, 12-4, on Saturday,
April 7, on a cold, windy day. The
win improved the Mustangs'
record to 6-2-1 on the year. The
Umatilla Vikings visit Heppner on
Saturday, April 14, for a
doubleheader at 11 a.m. to open
Columbia Basin Conference play.
The Rangers scored a run in the
top o f the first, but the Mustangs
came back with two o f their own
as Stefan Matheny singled and
Michael McCabe drove a pitch
deep over the right field fence.
After the Rangers came back to
tie it at 2-2, the Mustangs took the
lead for good when Travis
Bellamy was hit by a pitch and
later scored on a two-out Josh
Winters single. Chuy Elguezabal
walked and Matheny had a two
RBI single to make it 5-2.
The Mustangs added another
run in the third when Billy Gates
doubled and came home on a Brad
Adams single.
The Rangers added a run in the

In the next game, the Tigers
took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of
the second when Morgan reached
on an error and scored on a
Kilkenny double. Kilkenny later
scored on an error.
The Tigers took a 3-2 lead into
the bottom of the fifth when Rea
singled, Naims doubled and
Winters had an RBI single.
Gutierrez then drove a pitch over
the centerfield fence for a three-
run homerun to make it 6-3.
The Mustangs added another
run in the sixth as Rea walked,
stole second and later scored on a
passed ball to make it 7-3.
Winters went four innings to
get the win, with Gutierrez striking
out six and allowing no runs in
three innings of relief.
Gutierrez again led the way at
the plate going two for three with
a homerun with Winters also going
two for three. Rea went one for
two and scored two runs.
