W aldreps to become missionaries in Brazil
4-Hers take 'novel' approach to help Library
Books N' More Books members (left to right): Kara Clay, Miranda Hunt, Aimee Emery, Kim Morris,
Stephanie Holland, Shannon Clay and leader Becky Hunt. Not pictured is Emily Rietmann.
Some lone 4-H'ers have
discovered a "novel" way to help
out the lone Library.
The Books N' More
Books 4-H Club, with the help of
their leader, Becky Hunt, the
lone Library and the lone Topic
Club, which operates the library,
is helping restock children's
classics at the library.
The girls, assisted by
librarian Christy Crowell, first
selected well-worn classics they
would like to have replaced.
Then, once a month they
illustrated a poster about each
book, and included the book's
check-out card on the poster. The
posters were then hung at the
lone Post Office. People in the
community then selected cards
from the posters and purchased
new edition of the books, which
are then donated to the library.
"We just don't have the
money (to replace the books) and
the community has been really
nice," said Hunt, who is also a

Story and photo by Cathy McCabe
Much to the delight of lone Elementary School students, Duane
Neiffer, lone High School science teacher, brought his milk cow to
school. Most of the children had never seen a cow milked before and
some even had the unique experience of milking the cow first hand.
The cow, who is named Irene, was very patient with everyone. The
activity lead to lots of laughter and excitement.
member of the lone Topic Club.
"Some (book cards) have been
taken within a half an hour."
Out o f 10 books selected
for replacement, only three
remain, "Little Women", "Heidi",
and "Treasure Island", says Hunt.
She said that some books
that were selected to be replaced
date back to the late 1800s or
early 1900s and are often very
worn and unattractive for modem
day tastes.
Books N' More Books
members include Kara Clay,
Shannon Clay, Aimee Emery,
Stephanie Holland, Miranda
Hunt, Kim Morris and Emily
Rietmann. The group only
recently became a 4-H Club.
A Heppner couple, Brent
and Jennifer Waldrep, have
decided to make missionary work
their career.
The Waldreps, both 28,
came to Heppner around St.
Patrick's Day three years ago to
establish the Willow Creek
Baptist Church. Brent has been
pastor o f the church since their
arrival and Jennifer assisted with
the ministry and was also
employed with Morrow County
Behavioral Health.
The
Waldreps
are
planning to travel to Brazil where
Brent will work in a seminary
teaching Brazilian students about
planting churches, through the
missionary-sending agency of the
Southern Baptist Convention.
Jennifer will assist her
husband and also hopes to
incorporate theatre with ministry,
working with children and young
adults.
"Our primary purpose,"
said Jennifer, "is to share how
people can be right with God
through Jesus Christ and to
partner with Brazilians to
strengthen the church."
"We feel a very strong
leading," said Brent. "It's not
short term. This is a career. We'll
go and stay till something else
happens."
"I'm excited that people
are really friendly there," he said.
"They will open up and be your
friend ”
"There’s also a real
openness to hear the message,"
added Jennifer.
"Obviously our ministry
will be shaped as we get there
and see the needs of the country.
Our goal is to help Brazilian
seminary
students
plant
churches," said Brent. "We have
confidence that we're doing what
we need to be doing."
The Waldreps say that
Brazil is a mix o f cultures and
religions. They say that the
population
includes
many
immigrants from Africa who
practice
animism,
whereby
natural phenomena, animals and
inanimate objects are spiritual
beings and possess a soul.
The
Waldreps
left
Brent and Jennifer Waldrep
Heppner March 27 to visit
Brent's relatives in Texas. They
will attend a five-week training
course in Richmond, VA, before
leaving for for Brazil May 31.
They will first travel to
Campinas, in southern Brazil
near Rio. They will spend their
first year at Campinas learning
the Portuguese language and
Brazilian culture.
Brazilian language and
culture and life in a missionary
family are not foreign concepts
to Jennifer who spent her first six
years growing up in Brazil,
mainly in Rio and Sao Paolo. Her
father, a professor of philosophy
and ethics, was also a missionary
there. Her family now lives in the
Northwest. Brent has been on
previous mission trips and has
been to Brazil several times.
After the first year at
Campinas, the Waldreps will
move to Recife in northeast
Brazil where they will begin
work at the seminary.
