Mustangs win two at Dufur

Good pitching and manufacturing
of runs gav e the Heppner Mustangs
wins over the Dufur Rangers, 14-1
in five innings, and the Alsea
Wolverines, 9-2 in Dufur on
Saturday, March 24.
Michael McCabe struck out seven
and allowed just one hit to get the
win against Dufur, w ith relief help
from Conor Kilkenny. Kilkenny
had four strikeouts w hile allowing
just one hit. Stefan Matheny struck
out four while pitching four
scoreless innings to get the win
against Alsea, with relief help from
Chuy Elguezabal and Brad Adams.
The Mustangs got on the board
in the second inning against Dufur
w hen Travis Bellamy got hit by a
pitch He moved around to third
on a single by Donald Adams and
scored on a passed ball. Nick
Anthony and Stefan Matheny walked
and Michael McCabe hit a grand
slam to make it 5-0.
In the third. Brad Adams doubled,
stole third and went home on a
passed ball. Bellamy was hit by
another pitch, stole second, went
to third on a passed ball and scored
on a Donald Adams ground-out to
make it 7-0.
In the fourth, the Mustangs made
it 9-0 when Matheny singled, stole
second and third and scored on a
wild pitch. McCabe singled, stole
second and scored on a double by
Kelly Paullus.
The Mustangs put the game out
of reach in the fifth when Bellamy
singled, Kiel Naims was hit by a
pitch and Kilkenny walked to load
the bases. Elguezabal singled to
score two runs and Matheny singled
in another ran, Brian Gutierrez
singled home a run and Paullus hit
a sacrifice fly to make it 14-0.
Dufur scored a run in the bottom
of the fifth, but the outcome was
never in doubt.
McCabe went two for three with
his grand slam, Paullus went two
for three with two RBIs and
Matheny went two for three and
scored three runs.
The Mustangs loaded the bases
w ith no outs in the first against the
Alsea Wolverines, but managed
to score just one run.
In the third, McCabe walked,
stole second and third and came
home when Billy Gates reached
on an error. Brad Adams walked
and Paullus laid down a squeeze
bunt to score Gates. After Bellamy
and Donald Adams w alked, Anthony
grounded out to score Brad Adams,
making the score 4-0.
In the fourth, Matheny walked,
stole second and third and came
home on McCabe's groundout. Gates
walked, stole second and went to
third on a fielder’s choice by Brad
Adams. Gates then scored on a
Paullus bunt to make it 6-0.
Luke Murray picked up the
Mustangs' first hit in the fifth, stole
second and came around to score
on a Matheny ground-out.
The Wolvennes scored two runs
in the top of the sixth to get within
7-2, but the Mustangs came back
in the bottom half when Gates hit
a ball to deep centerfield and came
around to score, leaping over the
catcher to get a home run. Brad
Adams then doubled and came home
on a Paullus double to make the
score 9-2.
Brad Adams went one for two
with a double, Gates went one for
three and Paullus went one for three
with three RBIs, as the Mustangs
collectedjust five hits but benefitted
from nine walks and three hit batters.
The Mustangs improved their
record to 4-1-1 and will play
Sherman County on Tuesday, April
3, at 4:30 p.m. in Heppner.

Mustangs tie with Eagles 8-8

The visiting Wahtonka Eagles
and Heppner Mustangs played eight
innings until it was too dark to see
and ended tied at 8-8 on Tuesday,
March 20. With the tie, the
Mustangs' pre-season record stands
at 2-1-1.
Stefan Matheny got the Mustangs
on the board by hitting his first home
run of the year in the bottom of the
first inning. Brad Adams led off
the second with a walk and moved
to third on a stolen base and a passed
ball. Donald Adams walked with
two out and got into a rundown,
allowing Brad Adams to score and
make it 2-0.
The Eagles came back with three
runs in the top of the third but the
Mustangs tied it when Chuy
Elguezabal led off with a triple and
came home when a fly ball to right
field by Kelly Paullus was dropped.
Wahtonka took a 6-3 lead into
the sixth when Michael McCabe
w alked and moved to third on a
Paullus double. Brad Adams hit a
sacrifice fly to score McCabe and
Billy Gates doubled home Paullus
Garden Club
plans potluck
luncheon
The Blue Mountain District
Garden Club meeting will be held
in Condon on Saturday, April 21.
A survivor o f the Holocaust will
be in Heppner on April 23 for the
ecumenical salad luncheon. The
annual plant exchange will be held
Saturday. May 5. Greenhouse tours
and a meal at a Chinese restaurant
have been planned for Monday, May
7 Installation of new officers will
be held Monday, June 4.
A potluck luncheon is planned
for the next Heppner Garden Club
meeting on Monday, April 2, at 6
p.m District Director Maijone Hahn
will update members on what is
happening in other areas regarding
garden clubs.

assistant, updated members about
the Morrow County Health District
and answered questions from the
audience at the last meeting.

Neither team scored in the eighth.
Wahtonka scored five runs in the
top of the ninth as darkness arrived
and the umpires called the game.
Because it was called by darkness,
the game returned to the last
completed inning, which was the
8-8 tie.
Elguezabal went two for three
with two RBIs and Paullus went
two for four to lead the Mustangs
at the plate.
