St. Pat's brings friends, families together
To the Editor:
Once again, the March event
succeeded in bringing friends and
families and newcomers to Heppner
for a weekend o f activities and
entertainment. And I am speculating*
that, once again, most people had
a grand time.
Once again, I am marveling at
the combined efforts by a legion
of volunteers necessary for putting
together such a weekend. So many
faces reappeared in so many places
during the two-plus days; surely,
our community contained some
exhausted "leprechauns" by Sunday
evening.
So many generous individuals
helped with the major fund raiser
for "A Wee Bit O' Ireland," the
auction. The help came as donations
to the auction and as help with the
staging of the activity itself. Our
auction cannot happen without the
vast number of contributions from
our businesses and citizens who
support us. Each year, I have truly
been impressed with the strong
commitment so many have to
helping out. And the committee is
small, so we need that boost of
energy and helping hands and minds
that we get every year with our
planning, soliciting and auctioning.
This year, the auction committee
chose to experiment with the date,
time and location. We are now
evaluating the results of those
changes and we appreciate the input
we are receiving as we make some
decisions for next year's auction.
Change brings challenge, so we
also appreciate the patience of our
Friday evening participants as we
worked out some "bugs" in the
procedures. The committee is
looking for members, so anyone
interested in making the auction
a "grander" event is invited to let
me know.
I can't think of a finer place to
live most any day of the year, and
I certainly can’t think of a better
place to be than in Heppner on our
March weekend.

A Wee Bit
O’lreland *
By Claudia Hughes
"It's a soft day," said one of our
Irish visitors this past weekend.
What a good description for a day
that put a bit of rain upon our fields,
stayed dry during the festivities,
and was warm enough to walk about
town. (If the sun had been shining,
could we have handled any more
people?)
A large, warm and friendly crowd
of people attended various events
and kept our local people busy
feeding and entertaining them during
our 19th annual Wee Bit O' Ireland
celebration. Heppner received many
compliments thanks to such a great
bunch of behind-the-scenes people.
The St. Patrick's Committee will
hold a wrap-up meeting on
Thursday, March 22, at 6 p.m. at
John's Other Place (formerly Kate's)
to discuss last week's event and plan
next year's.
Hopefully all committee chairs
will attend to report on their event
and will act in an advisory capacity
as 2001 is discussed Those chairs
would be: co-chair, Cara Osmin;
auction chair, Doris Brosnan and
successors; sheep dog trials, Mary
Hamilton and Brian Thompson (the
event could not happen without the
utilization of the Thompson Ranch);
buttons,
Judie
Laughlin
entertainment, Don and Tami
Sneddon; Cruz-In, Dick and Lynnea
Sargent; leprechauns, Molly Rhea;
KUMA Coffee Hour, Dave Sykes;
flags, Jerry and Joyce Hollomon;
Ceili, Mike Duffy; and parade, Craig
Strobel and Monica Hunter.
In addition, heads o f the other
organizations such as the Elks (what
would we do without their facility
and wonderful cooperation),
Motocross, the Old Time Fiddlers,
meals, contests, etc. are invited to
attend to give input and suggestions
for the advisory committee to act
upon. Also encouraged to attend
are the local business owners such
as retail and restaurants who are
a large part of the weekend event.
All are welcome while ideas are
still fresh in their minds.
See you on Thursday and then
we'll let the green rest for awhile.
