Last minute shot sends lone to state tourney
Freshman Billy Gates saved the
lone Cardinal boys' varsity from
double overtime on Saturday , Feb.
17 in the Cardinals' game vs.
Condon.
Gates came off the bench in the
last minute to launch a three-point
missile that scored the final and
winning points against the Condon
Blue Devils. The final score was
56-53.
lone defeated South Wasco
County on Friday, Feb. 16,63-37,
to advance to the finals on Saturday.
ITie Cardinal men jumped out
with an eight-point lead in the first
quarter against the Redsides. The
lone squad continued to pound the
Redsides, diminishing their hopes
for a berth at the state tourney.
On Saturday, the C ardinals paired
off against the C ondon Blue Devils.
The game remained close throughout
the game, with lone trailing the Blue
Devils 13-8 at the end o f the-first
quarter.
lone turned up the tempo in the
second quarter to score 20 points
and lead Condon, 28-26.
lone kept their lead at the end
of the third quarter, leading by three
points, 38-35, but the Devils
outscored lone, adding 14 points
to lone's 10 for a tied scored of 49-
49, forcing an overtime situation.
Cory Bennetto, Brooks Rea and
Adam Neiffer fouled out and coach
Dennis Stefam could see that he
would have to change the game plan
to pull out a win. With less than
l minute in the game, Stefani could
see that Condon would be going
all out on Korey Morgan and Aaron
Brown. Stefani called a time out,
and told his players shuffle the ball
to Gates, who has a high percentage
o f sinking the ball from the three-
point area. The Cardinals mbounded
the ball, passed the ball to Gates
and the rest is Cardinal history.
