While the Heppner varsity girls held the usually prolific Pilot Rock squad to a measly 37 points, the Mustangs were unable to mount enough offense to overcome the visiting Rockets on Friday, February 16, and went down, 32-37. The Mustangs came out with a stingy man to man defense, with SanJuanita Elguezabal and Marissa McCabe aggressively hitting the boards. The Mustangs and their fans were a little frustrated by the lack of whistles in this very physical game, with only one foul called in the first quarter. The scoreboard read Mustangs, 6, Rockets, 10, after one. Lacey Matteson swooshed in a three-pointer to start the second quarter out with a bang. Both teams appeared a little flustered, which resulted in several turnovers and wild scrambles, then Matteson hit an inside jumper to bring the Mustangs within one, 11-12. At the break the Mustangs were trailing, 11- 14. Diminutive Brett Barber fired up her team, and the crowd, early in the third when she blocked a shot. Matteson hit the back side o f a two freethrows to pull Heppner within two points, McCabe hit a bucket and Matteson added another, but the Rockets again pulled away to lead by six, 16-22, after three. Shelley Rietmann put in an offensive rebound to start the Mustang scoring in the fourth. A Rocket made a lay-in and was fouled to again take the lead. Rietmann sunk two from behind the charity stripe to pull the Mustangs even again. The teams traded goals with Rocket Catherine Barkley hitting a three. Back down the floor in the Mustang key McCabe hit a field goal which Pilot Rock’s Erin McLaughlin answered with a bucket, so McCabe came back down the floor to put in another jumper, making the score 29-32. With time running out, the Mustangs were forced to put the Rockets on the line in the attempt to gain possession. This strategy fell flat with Pilot Rock hitting eight o f 15 free throws in the final period. With less than two minutes remaining, Meghan Bailey came in and nailed a three-pointer to bring Heppner back within four points, 32-36. Time ran out on the Mustangs, but the Heppner team proved Pilot Rock can be contained, and the Mustang fans were treated to quite a game. Heppner outscored Pilot Rock from the field, but the contest was won from behind the line with the Rockets converting 11 of their 17 freethrows, while the Mustangs went behind the stripe only four times to make three. Matteson put in an excellent game, leading the Mustang scoring with 17 points, two assists, three rebounds, and two steals. McCabe pulled down eight rebounds while putting in eight points, with Elguezabal grabbing six boards.
