Last week was the first Eighth Grade Job Shadow in Heppner with 30 students going to area businesses to become aware of different career opportunities. The Chamber of Commerce did some of the legwork and worked with teacher Greg Grant to promote the program, but the success of the day can be attributed to the school, the youth and the participating businesses. All 70+ were treated to an excellent lunch prepared by the Heppner High School students and cooks. Older students decorated, set-up and cleaned up. The Elks were kind enough to lend their facility. A day the Chamber hopes will become an annual event. Do you have legislative concerns you'd like to share with those who care? Then you'll want to visit with Senator Gordon Smith and Congressman Greg Walden at the Heppner town hall meeting, Thursday, Feb. 22, from 10-11 a.m., Gilliam Bisbee Conference Room. The auction crew is busy recruiting items for the first-ever Friday night auction on March 16, immediately following the stew feed. There will live and silent auctions and a country store at the Elks. Call Doris Brosnan, Kim Cutsforth or Susie Thompson if you have a donation. Next week at Chamber, Abby White o f Community Oregon will share the plan for the Portland visitation and gather community input; there will also be a conference call with Senator Greg Smith. The meeting will be held upstairs at Kate's Pizza at noon. Thought for the week: "Life is like a 10-speed bike; most of us have gears we never use." - Charles M.
