basketball team will play at the Big High School at 3:30 p.m. The Du fur

the lengthy program included the

Smith; an oration, "Night Brings
Out the Stars." by Estelle Rhea;
"Kentucky Babe" by the Ladies
Quartet of the Class; "Our Flag”
by Anna McBride: "Woman's
Place" by Lulu Hager; a vocal
solo by Elsie Ayers; a "History
of the Class" by Emmaline
Farnsworth; the Prophesy by
Heppner Blackman; "The Marble
Waiteth” by Lillian McNay;
"Missus Winslow's Soothing
Syrup" by the Male Quartet: the
"Regeneration of Cuba" by L.ouis
Balsiger; "Difficulty Our Best
Friend" by Bertha Adkins; and
"Commercial Advancement" by
Charlotte Shipley.

delivered the
graduation address. Judge
Bartholomew
made
the
presentation of diplomas and
Principal W.C. Howard offered
words to the class. The ceremony
ended with the class song
Ryan Campbell, 13,
Heppner Junior High School
eighth grader, learned first hand
what it was like to put together a
newspaper. Campbell and the
rest of his eighth-grade class at
Heppner Junior High School
participated in a job shadow
experience with local businesses
on Tuesday, February 13.
Campbell, whose job
shadow partner was April Sykes,
editor of the Heppner Gazette-
Times,
gathered
news,
researched information on the
Internet, wrote a news story and
headlines, took photos, and
prepared news copy for layout.
The program was part of
the work experience program at
Heppner Junior High and High
School which is headed up by
teacher Greg Grant.
Around 30 students
partnered with area businesses
and government agencies to give
students a taste of the business
world.
The morning culminated
in a noon Chamber of Commerce
luncheon for the students and
business people. The lunch was
catered by Heppner High School.

MCGG holds Customer Appreciation Day
1899 program makes way to Heppner
A program for the
Heppner High School graduating
class o f 1899 has made its way
home again, albeit by a very
circuitous route.
The hundred-and-two
year-old program was included
with items purchased in an estate
sale in Wickenburg, Arizona.
Nick Nusz, a maintenance
supervisor at the Wenden
Elementary School in Wenden,
AZ, came across the program and
forwarded it to Elaine Miller,
secretary at Heppner High
School.
The program, six pages,
approximately 4"x5" on heavy
ivory parchment paper and
printed with green logos and
lettering, is tied with a pink and
white string and tassel.
According to the
program, the
graduating
exercises were held at the Opera
House on May 26, 1899. at 8
p.m.
Class officers were listed
as Jennie Kirk, president; Louis
Balsiger, vice-president; Lulu
Hager, secretary; Pearl Wells,
treasurer, Emma Farnsworth,
historian,
and
Heppner
Blackman, prophet.
The class motto was
"Press forward, he conquers who
will." Class flower was the wild
rose.
BEO to sponsor scholarship
The Bank of Eastern Oregon will
again sponsor an agriculture/
business scholarship for graduating
seniors at Heppner. lone. Arlington.
Condon, Riverside, Spray and
Wheeler C ounty schools, announced
George Koffler. president of the
Bank of Eastern Oregon.
This marks the sixth year the
bank has sponsored the $500
scholarships to Morrow, Gilliam
and Wheeler county students This
year the awards will total S3.000
Applicants must plan to enroll
in college in either agriculture or
business. Selection will be based
on scholarship, leadership and
citizenship.
Applications may be picked up
from school counselors. The
deadline to submit applications is
May 11.
