Feb. 2, in a key Columbia Basin Conference game. The loss dropped the Mustangs to 7-2 and second place in the CBC, and 12-5 overall. Blake Know les got the Mustangs going by hitting a three-pointer, but the Vikings came back to take a 5-3 lead. Joe Papineau hit a free throw and made a baseline lay-in but the Mustangs still trailed 9-6 before Stefan Matheny and Ryan Matteson hit three-pointers for a 12-9 Mustang lead. The Vikings came back to take a 14-12 lead after one and stretched it to 18-12 before Michael McCabe hit a running jumper to cut the lead to 18-14. The Vikings led 22-14 before Brian Rust hit a free throw1 and McCabe a three-pointer to cut it to 22-18. David Piper hit a short jumper and McCabe scored on a rebound to cut the lead to 23-22. After a free throw by the Vikings, Craig Scott hit a jumper to tie, then put the Mustangs ahead, scoring on a lay-in after a Matheny steal. The Vikings scored to end the half with the score tied at 26-26. Knowles hit a lay-in off a pass from McCabe to open the third, but the Vikings came back to take a 30-28 lead. Matteson hit a jumper to tie the game at 30-30, but the Vikings came back to take a 34-30 lead. McCabe scored on a rebound, then the Vikings came back to take a 41-31 lead. Rust scored on a rebound and Matteson hit two free throws but the Vikings increased their lead to 48-36 after three Scott opened the fourth, converting a three-point play off an offensive rebound putback. The Vikings came back with a bucket to make it 50-39. McCabe made a steal and fed Scott for a lay-in, Matteson stole the ball and fed McCabe for a lay-in and Knowles scored off a pass from McCabe to cut the lead to 50-45. After a Viking bucket, Knowles hit a free throw and scored on a lay- in to cut the lead to 52-48. A three- point play by the Vikings increased their lead to 55-48. but Knowles hit a short jumper to make it 55-50. Matheny hit a jumper to make it 57-52 and Knowles scored off a Matteson pass to make it 57-54 with :47 left. The Mustangs could get no closer as the Vikings hit seven of 10 free throws in the final :42 seconds to make the final score, 64-54. Knowles led the Mustangs with 14 points, nine rebounds and three steals. McCabe finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and two assists. Scott had nine points and two steals. Matteson had seven points and three assists. Matheny had three steals and two assists. Bv R ick P aullus After a disappointing loss on Friday, Feb. 2, against the Umatilla Vikings, the Heppner Mustang varsity boys rebounded to beat the Sherman County Huskies, 56-47, on Saturday, Feb. 3, at Moro. ITie Mustangs are in second place in the Columbia Basin Conference, tied with Weston-McEwen at 8-2, with a big game against the TigerScots on Friday, Feb. 9, in Heppner. The Mustangs, 13-5 overall, are at Stanfield on Saturday, Feb. 10. Craig Scott hit a lay-in and Ryan Matteson hit a baseline jumper to put the Mustangs up 4-0 early. Scott hit a runmngjumper, but the Huskies came back to tie it at 6-6. Chip Piper then hit a baseline jumper, but Sherman County again tied the score before Joe Papineau scored and Michael McCabe hit a free throw to make it 11-8. After a Husky bucket, Matteson hit a three-pointer and Papineau hit a jumper at the buzzer to give the Mustangs a 16-10 lead. Blake Knowles made a steal and lay-in to open the second, then fed Papineau for a lay-m, increasing the lead to 20-12. McCabe hit three of four free throws to make it 23-15, but the Huskies came back to get within 23-19. Matteson hit a free throw , McCabe hit two more, then fed Brad Adams to give the Mustangs a 28-19 lead at halftime. The Mustangs came out hot in the third quarter. Knowles hit a lay- tn, Matteson hit a long jumper, then a short jumper off an inbounds play, and McCabe scored on a baseline drive to make it 36-19. Die Huskies came back with a 9-1 run before Stefan Matheny hit a nmningjumper to make it 39-28. Matheny got a steal and lay-in. but the Huskies came back to cut the lead to 41-35 going into the fourth quarter. Papineau hit a lay-in off a nice pass from McCabe, but the Huskies cut the lead to 43-38. McCabe hit a short jumper, and Papineau and Scott each hit two free throws to increase the lead to 49-38. Matteson and McCabe each hit a free throw to make it 51 -40. Scott hit three free throws and Papineau and McCabe each hit one as the Mustangs held on to take the 56-47 win. The Mustangs hit 11 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter and 19 of 30 for the game. Papineau led the Mustangs with 14 points on four of five shooting and pulled down five rebounds. McCabe hit eight of 12 free throws and finished with 12 points, three steals, three assists and three rebounds. Matteson hit four of six shots to score 11 points. Scott hit three of five for nine points and had four steals and two assists. Knowles had eight rebounds and two assists before fouling out early in the fourth quarter. Mustang boys roll over Huskies By R ick P au llu s The Heppner Mustang JV boys started slow, but got their running game going in the third quarter to roll over the Sherman County Huskies, 61-45, in Moro, on Saturday, Feb. 3. The win kept the Mustangs' perfect record intact at 14-0 for the year. The Mustangs got four points each from Brian Rust, Brad Adams and Chuy Elguezabal to take a 16-6 lead after one. Rust went for eight and Elguezabal, five, as the Mustangs extended their lead to 32-18 at halftime. Kevin Drake scored six points in the third as the Mustangs got their running game going, outsconng the Huskies, 23-3, to take a commanding 55-21 lead going into the fourth. The Huskies made a run in the fourth, but the game was never in doubt as the Mustangs took the win. Rust led the Mustangs with 14 points and Elguezabal finished with 13. Brad Adams had a strong inside game, scoring 13 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, six on the offensive end. Drake finished with eight and Sam Van Liew had six points and four rebounds. Although the Mustangs won the contest 71 - 67, it was by no means a stroll in the park. The Mustangs jumped to a 17- 10 first quarter lead with strong field goal shooting as well going 100 percent from behind the line. Just when the Heppner fans were thinking the Viking ship had been sunk in the second quarter, Umatilla battled back to within three, 21-24, before the Mustangs put together another scoring frenzy to finish the half with a ten point, 36-26, lead. Heppner maintained this margin of advantage throughout the third, then the Vikings went on the warpath to outscore the Mustangs in the fourth. The Mustangs did not allow the Vikings to come closer than four points, and finished off the game 22 of 32, for 69 percent, from behind the charity stripe, and out-rebounded the Vikings, 50- 32. Lacey Matteson led the scoring with 22 points, including two three-point goals, with Shelley Rietmann slipping through the key to put in 20 points while pulling down 15 boards. Jasmine Campos and Michelle Strong led the Umatilla scoring with 18 apiece. Mustang JV girls lose to Umatilla By M olly R h ea Although Heppner's junior varsity girls lost to Umatilla, 25- 33, on Friday, February 2, the score doesn't really tell the story. The Mustangs were handling Umatilla's JVs just fine until the Vikings subbed a few o f their varsity squad into the lineup. The Mustangs were leading seven-zip after the first eight minutes o f play, then in the second quarter Umatilla shuffled in a couple o f varsity girls to outscore the Mustangs, 2-14. Varsity starter. Jasmine Campos, checked in for the third quarter, scored a quick 10 points toward the Viking effort and effectively nailed the lid down on the young Mustangs. Although Heppner outscored Umatilla 10-5 in the final period, the Mustangs were unable to scramble out o f the hole. Heppner led in the rebounding stats with 42 to Umatilla's 36, Brooke Rust scooped nine o f the boards, with Chantea McCauley grabbing eight and Nikki Sisk getting credit for five. Sisk and Tiffany Piper led Heppner's scoring with six points each, while Campos led all scorers with 10.
