The Heppner varsity girls were
a little surprised by a much
improved Umatilla Viking team
on Friday, February 2. Although
the Mustangs won the contest 71 -
67, it was by no means a stroll in
the park.
The Mustangs jumped to a 17-
10 first quarter lead with strong
field goal shooting as well going
100 percent from behind the line.
Just when the Heppner fans were
thinking the Viking ship had
been sunk in the second quarter,
Umatilla battled back to within
three, 21-24, before the Mustangs
put together another scoring
frenzy to finish the half with a
ten point, 36-26, lead.
Heppner
maintained
this
margin of advantage throughout
the third, then the Vikings went
on the warpath to outscore the
Mustangs in the fourth. The
Mustangs did not allow the
Vikings to come closer than four
points, and finished off the game
22 of 32, for 69 percent, from
behind the charity stripe, and
out-rebounded the Vikings, 50-

Rietmann
slipping
through the key to put in 20

boards.

scored a quick 10 points toward
the Viking effort and effectively
nailed the lid down on the young

Although Heppner outscored
Umatilla 10-5 in the final period,
the Mustangs were unable to
scramble out o f the hole.
Heppner led in the rebounding
stats with 42 to Umatilla's 36,
Brooke Rust scooped nine o f the
boards, with Chantea McCauley
grabbing eight and Nikki Sisk
getting credit for five. Sisk and
