Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, January 31, 2001 - FIVE
By Molly Rhea
The Heppner and Pilot Rock
varsity girls' teams both looked a
little tight at their Friday, January
26, matchup.
The Mustangs were unable to
shake their nerves and control the
tempo, losing 45-57 and allowing
the Rockets to remain undefeated
in the Columbia Basin
Conference.
Score-wise, the contest got a
slow start with both teams
putting up an opponent-fuzzing
full court press. Pressure by
Lacey Matteson forced Pilot
Rock turnovers, while San
Juanita Elguezabal was able to
anticipate Rocket passes for
steals.
Using intense man-to-man
pressure on the defensive end,
the Mustangs kicked in a scoring
frenzy in the second quarter.
Jenni Patton went after rebounds
with a fury and Meghan Bailey
hit a trey to put Heppner ahead
15-13. Converted free throws
helped the Mustangs extend their
lead to six, a 25-19 Heppner
advantage at the half time break.
The Rockets turned the tables
in the third quarter, repeatedly
forcing Mustang turnovers to
overtake Heppner, 25-26, toward
the end of the period. Pilot Rock
was able to capitalize on poor
passes to increase the lead to
* eight, 31 - 39, at the quarter's end.
Matteson exploded with eight
. of her 16 points for the Mustangs
in the fourth, but because of the
deadly combination of turnovers,
as well as the necessity of
forcing the Rockets to the
freethrow line in the attempt to
gain possession, the Heppner
squad was unable to overcome
the deficit, and lost the effort.
The Rocket coaches substitute
freely from a deep bench. They
are quick and aggressive, but
tended to be inconsistent.
The Mustangs are already
looking fo|ward to revengipg tips.,
