Mustang JVs roll over Rockets

Big second and third quarters

boys to a 69-48 win over the Pilot
Rock Rockets on Friday, Jan 26,
in Pilot Rock. The win kept the
Mustangs unbeaten at 11-0 on the
year.
Brian Rust scored eight and
Kevin Drake, five, in the first as
the Mustangs took a 10-15 lead.

The lone Lady Cardinals shot
down the Arlington Honkers with
a 68-18 win on Saturday, Jan 27.
The lone women jumped out
with a 12-2 lead at the end of the
first quarter. Arlington scored 11 .
points in the second quarter, but
lone answered with an additional
13 points to end the half at 25-13.
The Lady Cardinals scored a
massive 25 points in the third
quarter and followed up with an
additional 18 points in the fourth
quarter.
Amellia Peck led the Cardinal
slaughter with 13 points, four
steals and four assists.
Shelby Krebs shot 100 percent
from the three-point range and
scored a total of 10 points. Krebs
was also one of the leaders on the
boards, bringing down seven
rebounds. Natalie McElligott
added 10 points, four rebounds,
two steals, four assists and
blocked one Arlington shot
attempt. Kristina Powell scored
eight points, blocked one attempt
for a Honker basket, captured one
steal and delivered one assist.

team girls lose

The Heppner girls' 'C' team
worked hard to keep up with
Condon’s junior varsity oi>
Tuesday, January 23, but were
unable to handle the Blue Devils’
press and went down, 16-33.
Both teams got off to a slow
start with the Mustangs trailing at
the half, 6-10.
The Heppner squad came into
the third quarter fired up and
quickly turned it into a tie game
with Tiffany Piper popping in'
two quick shots. With a time out’j
the Blue Devils regrouped and:
concentrated on full court-
pressure,
forcing
Mustang
turnovers which resulted in easy
lay-ins.
Piper and Tiffany Matheney
combined for all six of the
Mustang points for the third
quarter as Heppner was unable to
overcome the continued pressure.
Piper led Heppner’s scoring
with five points. Matheney added
four. Brooke Rust displayed her
strength and aggression by
cleaning up under the boards to
grab several rebounds.
Although with this loss the ’C
team record is 0-3, the girls are
learning
fundamentals
and
improving steadily.

The junior varsity Mustang
girls started off the action against
the Culver Bulldogs on Saturday,
January 27, on the Heppner
hardwood.
The Heppner squad kept close
for the first part of the ball game,
but eventually was overcome by
Culver’s dogged defense and
lost, 25-36.
Stephanie Hanson led the
Mustangs' scoring with nine
points and Jesse Kempas put in
seven.
