Mustang kennels Bulldogs

The M ustang varsity team
easily kenneled the Culver
Bulldogs on Saturday, January
13. Heppner team ed a relentless
defense with aggressive offense
to
outscore C ulver in every
quarter.
Shelley Rietmann again led the
M ustang charge with 21 points,
shooting a perfect nine for nine
from the field and three for four
from
the
charity
stripe.
Rietm ann also nabbed six
rebounds with her usual tough
play under the basket.
Lacey Matteson contributed all
around the court with seven
points, seven assists and six
boards for the Mustangs.
The win put the M ustangs 3-1
in
the
Colum bia
Basin
Conference and 8-4 overall.
The Mustangs travel to Athena
on Friday, January 19, to tangle
with the TigerScots, then host the
Stanfield Tigers on Saturday,
January 20.
W eston-M cEwen varsity is
currently 2-2 in CBC and 7-5
overall,
while
Stanfield's
standings are a mystery since
their coach evidently is not
calling in their home games.

lone Lady Cardinals fall
to So. Wasco Co.
The lone Lady Cardinals had
trouble getting shots to fall in at
Mauptn on Friday, Jan. 12, and fell
to South Wasco County, 43-21.
The Cardinals had a nearly dry
first half with only two points scored
in the first quarter and an additional
three points in the second quarter,
allowing the Redsides to lead, 27-5
at the half.
The Cardinals doubled their score
in the third quarter and outscored
South Wasco in the fourth quarter,
11-8, but the damage in the first
half was too great for the lone squad
to recover from.
Natalie McElligott led the Cardi­
nal scorers with eight points, six
o f those launched from the three-
point area in the second half. The
freshman also captured two re­
bounds and led the Cardinal larceny
with four steals.
Allison Halvorsen canned five
points, captured three rebounds and
robbed one Redside possession.
Amellia Peck added three points
and seized six rebounds for the team.
Knstina Powell scored two points,
brought down four rebounds, stole
one ball and delivered one assist.
Olivia Thompson scored three points
in the fourth quarter, grabbed one
rebound and handed out two assists.
Cyndi Heagy did a terrific job for
lone, capturing five rebounds, one
steal and delivering two assists.
Cardinal varsity men defeat
Wheeler Falcons
TTie lone Cardinal varsity men
defeated the Wheeler Falcons, 67-
52, on Saturday, Jan. 13.
lone kept a slim lead throughout
the first half, leading 26-20. Wheeler
matched lone point-for-point in the
fourth quarter with each team adding
19 points to their score, but the
Cardinals netted an additional 22
points in the third quarter, sealing
the fate o f the Falcons.
Brad Burright was the leading
scorer for lone with 16 points.
Bumght also added one assist, three
rebounds and two steals to his team's
endeavors.
Aaron Brown scored 10 points,
delivered five assists, captured eight
rebounds, grabbed one Falcon
point producer for lone with 10
points. M organ also added one
rebound, one assist and one steal
to his team's effort. Koby Rea added
seven points, one rebound, six assists
and one steal. Brian Gutierrez scored
six points, seized two rebounds,
delivered two assists and nabbed
two steals. Andre Rietmann netted
two points, three rebounds, one
assist and two steals. Billy Gates
and Cayle Krebs each scored two
points and delivered one assist.
lone fCf team handed loss
The lone "C" team men were
handed a loss by Spray on Tuesday,
Jan. 9. The Spray Eagles junior
varsity defeated the Cardinals, 28-
11 .
Derek Campbell led the lone team
with four points, two rebounds and
three steals. Til Tullis aided in the
scoring leadership with four points
and two rebounds. Freshman Paul
Neiffer scored two points, captured
eight rebounds and three steals.
Helping on the boards were Aaron
Tworek with three rebounds, Jeff
Hunt with eight, Tim Doherty with
two and Curtis Thompson with one.
lone had a difficult time playing
the first three quarters, but came
alive in the fourth quarter.
Coach Jim Swanson commented
on his team performance, "Ninety
percent o f our turnovers were in
the first half. We are playingjunior
varsity and a few varsity-level
players which makes it difficult to
be competitive. The team is glad
to have the games to play. The guys
play with their entire hearts."

a 13 point lead into the locker
room at half time on Friday,
January 12, then coasted through
the second h alf to pluck the
W ahtonka Eagles, 45-34.
Shelly Rietmann had a stellar
game, racking up 26 points along
with five rebounds.

anticipating rebounds, handing
out

and
creating
turnovers, along with scoring
seven points. Lacey M atteson's
stats included seven points, five
steals and four assists.
The M ustangs are playing
heads up basketball, while
displaying
team work

possession and blocked one shot
attempt. Adam Neiffer contributed
10 points, three assists and five
rebounds. Korey M organ scored
eight points, handed off seven assists

standing game, adding eight points,
one assist, four rebounds and one
steal to the Cardinal tyranny. Brooks
Rea added five points, delivered
two assists, detained two rebounds

Karl Morgan entered the game in
the fourth quarter and added an
additional two points to the lone
score.

Garden Club donates to assisted
living project
lone junior varsity men were
handed a loss by South W asco
County. The Cardinals fell short
to the Redsides, 43-37.
The lone squad was ahead o f
South W asco County at the half,
leading 18-12, but a nearly scoreless
third quarter put them behind the
Redsides, 25-20, at the beginning
o f the fourth quarter.
Karl M organ led the Cardinals
with 14 points, three rebounds and
one steal. Andrew Rietmann added
seven points, four rebounds, five
steals and blocked one Redside shot
attempt. Brian Gutierrez scored six
points, captured one rebound and
grabbed one steal. Billy Gates
supplied five points, five rebounds,
two assists and tw o steals to his
team's endeavors. Zac Fabian scored
five points and snared one rebound.
Koby Rea did an outstanding job
on the boards, apprehending nine
rebounds. Rea was also responsible
for three steals.

Suzanne Jepsen, chair o f the
W illow Creek Valley Assisted
Living project spoke to the Heppner
Garden Club about assisted living
at the January Garden Club meeting.
The Garden Club presented Jepsen
a check for $100 to be used for the
assisted living fund.
"Suzanne gave a very informed
and well-planned program," said
Garden Club President Peggy
Connor. "Their com m ittee has
worked hard and diligently for this
to succeed and need to be com ­
mended for their commitment and
hard work. This will really benefit
Heppner's junior varsity girls
continue to struggle, losing a
close game to W ahtonka's JVs,
24-29, on Friday, January 12.
After a slow start in the first
quarter, the young Mustangs
pulled within two points going
into the locker room for the
break.
Although Heppner played with
them throughout the second half,
the Mustang JVs were unable to
overtake the fledgling Eagles and
dropped the game by five points.
Stephanie Hanson led the
Mustang scoring with six points,
with Tylynn Smith and Kelsey
Greenup adding five points
apiece to Heppner's total.
Wahtonka's Lacey Licks led all
scorers with 10 points.

County telecommunications
plan available
The final M orrow County Tele­
com m unications Plan is now
available. The plan describes how
telecommunication is used currently
in the county and recommends goals
for improvements.
The plan is the result o f over a
year o f work by community stake­
holders representing health care,
education, small business, govern­
m ent, industry and economic
development.
Goals include providing education
on how to use telecommunications
in business development; developing
an integrated high-speed county
telecommunications network and
advocating for broadband Internet
access in every community in the
county.
The plan was produced by Greater
Eastern Oregon Development
Corporation with support from the
Morrow County Court and Oregon
Economic and Community Develop­
ment Department.

Elks Club for the Town and Country
banquet held Jan. 11 with the theme,
"Coming Together". Different scenes
o f what brings people together were
depicted at each table. The colors
green and white were displayed
about the room and green and white
candles were used to compliment
the scene.
The Garden Club has decided to
start their meetings at 6:30 p.m. on
the first Monday o f the month. The
public is welcome to attend.
