Mustang boys win Oregon Trail Classic
By Rick Paullus
The Heppner Mustang boys
outlasted the Condon Blue
Devils, 52- 48, to win the Oregon
Trail Classic Tournament held in
Pendleton on Dec. 29-30,
sponsored by Red Lion Hotel and
Pioneer Bank. The Mustangs
beat the South Wasco County
Redsides, 55-48, on Friday night
to get to the championship game.
The Mustangs improved to 5-3
on the year with the Columbia
Conference season beginning on
Friday, Jan. 5, at Umatilla, and
on Saturday, Jan. 6, with a home
game against Sherman County.
The Mustangs jumped out to a
9-2 lead on the Redsides Friday
night as Ryan Matteson scored
all nine points, hitting a three-
pointer to get the game started.
The Redsides got to within 9-6,
but a short jumper by David
Piper gave the Mustangs a 13-8
lead at the end of the first
quarter.
Blake Knowles hit two free
throws to start the second
quarter, but picked up his third
foul with 7:35 left. Sam Van
Liew scored on a pass from
Matteson, Michael McCabe hit a
three-pointer and scored on a
steal and Matteson hit a running
jumper to give the Mustangs a
24-10 lead midway through the
quarter. The Redsides scored six

scored on a rebound and Van
Liew scored to make it 28-18.
South Wasco wouldn't quit
though, and a three-pointer at the
buzzer narrowed the Mustang
lead to 28-23 at halftime.
McCabe got a steal and a lay-in
and Stefan Matheny and
Matteson eaoh scored to boost
the Mustang lead to 34-23 to
start the third quarter. Van Liew
then scored six of the Mustangs'
11 points, the last two on a lay-in
from a nice pass from Adams to
end the third, to help the
Mustangs to a 45-30 lead.
The Redsides cut the lead to
50-41 before Craig Scott scored
on a pass from Chuy Elguezabal
and Matteson hit a long jumper
to make it 54-43. Elguezabal hit
a free throw and the Redsides hit
a three-pointer at the end for a
final margin of 55-48.
Matteson led the Mustangs
with 17 points, eight rebounds
and two steals. Van Liew had a
strong game off the bench,
hitting five of seven shots for 11
points and pulled down six
rebounds. McCabe finished with
10 points, eight rebounds and
four steals. Brian Rust had six
rebounds, Scott, three steals, and

give the Mustangs an early 3-2
lead, only to see the Blue Devils
take a 6-3 lead. McCabe scored
on a rebound basket, Knowles hit
a long jumper and Elguezabal
scored on a running jumper to
give the Mustangs a 9-7 lead.
Adams hit a baseline jumper to
make it 11-9, but the Blue Devils
scored on a three point play to
end the first quarter to take a 12-
11 lead.
Knowles hit a long jumper to
start the second quarter, but the
Blue Devils came back to take a
16-13 lead. McCabe hit a long
jumper and Matteson hit a three-
pointer to tie it at 18-18. Condon
then came back to take a 22-18
lead. Papineau scored on a tip-in
and Piper hit a free throw to
make the halftime score 23-21.
Piper began the fourth with a
three-pointer and Papineau hit a
short jumper to give the
Mustangs a 42-39 lead early in
the fourth, but Condon came
back to tie it at 43-43. Matheny
hit a long jumper and Matteson
hit another to break another tie.
A rebound basket by McCabe
with 1:28 left made it 49-46. The
Blue Devils made it 49-48, but
Scott took a pass from Knowles
in the key, hitting the short
jumper while being fouled with
16.7 seconds left. Scott hit the
free throw and the Blue Devils
missed on their final two shot
attempts as the Mustangs held on
for the 52-48 win.

Mustang girls drop game to Condon,
beat south Wasco in tourney
By Molly Rhea
The Heppner girls dropped the
opening game of the Oregon
Trail Classic to Condon, 40-51,
on Friday, December 29. The
tournament, hosted by Red Lion
and Pioneer Bank, featuring boys
and girls teams from South
Wasco County and Enterprise, as
well as Condon and Heppner,
was held at the Pendleton
Convention Center.
Early foul trouble spelled the
difference for the Mustangs with
their inside battler, Shelley
Reitmann, sitting out most of the
first half. The Mustangs were
unable to contain the Blue
Devils' scoring trio of Nicole
Jamesian, and the Snyder girls,
Jennifer and Jessica, whp
combined for 40 of Condon's 51
pdihts.
In the final quarter, trailing 27-
43, the Mustangs refused to fold,
outscoring the Blue Devils 13-2.
This flurry narrowed the margin
to five, 40-45, but in the end,
Condon held the trump card
forcing the Mustangs to foul in
order to gain possession. As
three key player were sent to the
bench with five fouls apiece, the
Mustang rally sputtered.
This loss matched the Mustang
girls against South Wasco
County in Saturday's consolation
round.
The Redsides were
bounced by Enterprise on Friday,
38-32.
Each Mustang contributed
points to Heppner’s bottom line
in their consolation win over the
South Wasco County Redsides
on Saturday afternoon.
The
Mustangs ran away with the trout
line, leading the entire game,
with 49-35 for the final score.
Lacey Matteson was named to
the all-tournament team along
with Enterprise's Anderson and
Talbott, Condon's Jamesian, and
Chelsey Hauser from So. Wasco
County.
The Mustangs open their
league season this weekend,
playing in Umatilla on Friday
and hosting Sherman County on
Saturday.
