Cub Scout Pack 661 has record popcorn sales
Cub Scout Pack 661 sold over
$10,000 of popcorn during their
yearly popcorn sale. Of that
amount, the pack keeps $4,562

The money raised by Pack 661
will be used to pay for
achievement badges, day camp,
den crafts and activities and for
books and uniforms for boys who
cannot afford them.
"Pack 661 has always operated
on a limited budget and due to
the generosity of the people of
Heppner and the surrounding
area, they'll be able to do some
things they might otherwise not
have been able to do," said den
leader Debbie Harper.
Matt Holland was the pack's
top salesman, with sales over
$2,000. He will received a
college scholarship which is a
percentage of his sales. He was
also the high seller in the district
and will receive a $100 gift
certificate to the Cub Scout store
in Kennewick, WA.
Every boy who sold $1000 or
more of popcorn received a
camping package from Trails

popcorn. Four boys sold over

B/yan Holland, $1,189, Curtis
Harper, $1,097, and Drew
Johnson, $1,043. They also
• received first through fourth
place prizes given by the pack.
Matt received a two-man pup
tent; Bryan, a first aid kit and an
insulated sleeping bag; and
Curtis and Drew both received
camping cook kits.
The pack also gave the top
three sellers in each a den a two-
liter pop. They were: Tiger Cubs-
Chance Raver, first, Zach Hintz,
second, Cody Orr, third; Wolf
Den-Donald Matthews, first,
, Justin Gutierrez, second, Brett
Hjrrison, third; Bear Den-Bryan
Holland, first, Curtis Harper,
second. Drew Johnson, third;
Webelos Den 1-Matt Holland,
first, Chris Hickerson, second,
Taylor Disque, third; Webelos
Den 2-Cameron McCurry, first,
Trent Miles, second, Zach
Alford, third.
Harper Holsters donated a
pocket knife to each boy who
sold over $250: Tyler Robinson,
Drew Johnson, Trent Miles,
Bryan Holland, Matt Holland,
Curtis Harper, Chance Raver,
Colter Raver and Donald
Matthews.
Every boy who sold $500 or
over received a compass: Drew
Johnson, Bryan Holland, Matt
Holland, Curtis Harper, Cameron
McCurry and Trent Miles.
Darrell
Raver was the
"Popcorn

who
coordinated the sales effort.
Because of such an outstanding
sales year, the Scouts were able
to give something back to the
community. They donated $200
to the Neighborhood Center for
their winter heating fund, to help
pay for fuel for low-income
families.

To the Editor:
I would like to respond to the
letters concerning the "Harry
Potter" series that have been
printed the last two weeks in the
G-T paper. When I read the first
letter, written by Jannie Allen, I
was tempted to respond, but I
haven't read the books and knew
nothing o f the author, so I held
back. I appreciated the courage
of Teri Lynch, found in her reply
to Jannie Allen's letter, and
wondered why a young, pregnant
mother of two has to sound the
alarm,
instead
of God's
preachers.
Today I read the letter by Jason
Just and found it most
interesting. If his information
concerning the author of the
Harry Potter series is accurate,
then I believe, as parents and
Christians, it is our responsibility
to stay away from literature that
promotes witchcraft or wizardry
as being a solution for
overcoming hardships or evil.
Jannie's letter plainly stated
that the main character in the
book, Harry, is a wizard.
According to the dictionary,
wizardry and witchcraft as one in
the same. Deuteronomy 18:10-12
says: "There shall not be found
among you any one that maketh
his son or his daughter to pass
through the fire, or that useth
divination, or an observer of
times, or an enchanter, or a
witch, or a charmer, or a
consulter with familiar spirits, or
a wizard, or necromancer. For all
that do these things are an
abomination unto the Lord: and
because of these abominations
the Lord thy God doth drive them
out from before thee."
In the New Testament, the
Apostle Paul confirmed God's
will concerning witchcraft and it
didn't change from His will in the
Old Testament. Galatians 5:19-
21 says: "Now the works of the
flesh are manifest, which are
these: Adultery, fornication,
uncleanness,
lasciviousness,
idolatry, witchcraft, hatred,
variance, emulations, wrath,
strife,
seditions,
heresies,
envyings, murders, drunkenness,
revelings, and such like: o f the
which I tell you before, as I have
also told you in time past, that
they which do such things shall
not inherit the kingdom of God."
Acts 19:17-20 also says:
"When the Jews and Gentiles in
Ephesus heard about this, they
were so frightened that they
praised the name of the Lord
Jesus. Many who were followers
now started telling everyone
about the evil things they had
been doing. Some who had been
practicing
witchcraft
even
brought their books and burned
them in public. These books were
worth about fifty thousand silver
coins. So the Lord's message
spread and became even more
powerful."
I believe the Bible clearly
instructs Christians to denounce
the practice of witchcraft. I also
believe Christian parents have
every right to be concerned if
their children are reading books
that promote witchcraft as being
acceptable. I do not believe it is
wrong to read books that have
stories of witchcraft in them,
otherwise I would not be able to
read my own beloved Bible.
What concerns me is when
stories full o f witchcraft and
wizardry are read to children
without any warning of God's
opinion on it being sounded.
For the most part, children
believe what their teachers tell
them. It's wrong when books that
promote witchcraft and wizardry
can be read by teachers in the
public schools based upon their
literary value, yet the Bible,
which is full of literary value, is
forbidden. Maybe parents and
teachers
who
consider
themselves Christians, yet find
themselves aboard the "Harry
Potter Hysteria Wagon," should
first re-read their Bibles before
supporting books that contradict
their confessed beliefs.

Harry Potter - satanist link questioned
To the Editor:
I was intrigued by Jason Just's
reference to a "London Times"
article in which J.K. Rowling,
author of the Harry Potter series,
claims to be a satanist.
I conducted an on-line archive
search of "The Times" for the
last year and found nothing close
Traps cruel
To the Editor:
Cheers and congratulations to
the kind people of Washington
State for voting to abolish the use
of the non-selective, cruel, flesh
cutting, bone-breaking steel jump
traps and 1080.
A nation is judged by the way
they treat their animals. Oregon
will not rate very high on the
totem
pole
for
humane
compassion. 1080 is the most
abominable poison on earth with
its potential to kill 10 times over.
Since many birds eat fresh
meat, it is no wonder that the
birds are not in abundance like
they were a few yean ago.
The statement, made by Sharon
Ham son, that the traps currently
used in Oregon are the most
humane is gratuitous, groundless
to the article he used in his
argument. Would he please
provide us all with the exact
citation so we can look it up for
ourselves?
And by the way, I seriously
doubt if die leader of the satanist
church is a reliable source.

and uncalled for.
Traps have always been cruel,
are cruel and always will be cruel
as long as they are set out to
catch unsuspecting animals and
birds.
