Thomas D. Springer
Thomas D. Springer, 67, of
Heppner, died Monday, Novem
ber 27, 2000, at Pioneer Memo
rial Hospital in Heppner.
Graveside service was held
Friday, December 1, 2000 at the
Heppner Masonic Cemetery.
He was bom October 20,1933,
at Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Harry
and Vivian Gasquint Springer. He
grew up and attended schools at
Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, then en
tered the military, serving with the
U.S. Army during the Korean
Conflict.
On October 20, 1956, he mar
ried Viola L. Jessop, at Gearing,
Nebraska. They moved to Ver-
nonia before coming to Heppner
in 1957. They owned and oper
ated Tom ’s TV and Repair in
Heppner. Mrs. Springer died in
January 1998.

A great amount of work went
into the Light Parade and the
"Stroll Heppner" Open Houses.
The Chamber and the merchants
hope that one and all had a great
time.
All who made it possible are to
be commended for publicity,
parade entries, speaker system
repair, announcing, lining up the
parade, making sure the trees had
lights, living nativity, cookie
baking, decorating, hanging
banners, door prizes, working
extra hours behind a counter and
all the myriad of behind-the-
scenes details that go into
"Heppner Happenings" and all
Willow Creek Valley events.
For the first time, the light
parade was judged by you, the
public. If you are reading this,
you have also read the results.
Your patience is appreciated. If
woi;d leaked oyt, the results were
known'giqly to three people and
the Gazette-Times. When the
decision was made to let you be
the judge, thus taxing your
patience, it had nothing to do
with the current state o f affairs
across the U.S. Past judges
wanted the public to decide.
Prescription for December:
keep your sense o f humor, read
the Christmas Carol, give a thank
you to all who took the time to
create a float; hug a child, help
make Christmas from the heart,
attend "The Best Christmas
Pageant Ever," take a child to
have a photo with Santa and the
Reindeer on Sunday, Dec. 17,
attend programs, just relax and
above all, enjoy the reason for
the season.
Next week Tom W olff will
report on the Rural Ag
Conference held last week in
Rufus. Visitors to Chamber are
welcome. We'll be at Kate's,
upstairs, at noon.

County short
$700,000
Following voter defeat of the
four-year Morrow County levy
last month, county officials are
carrying through on their promise
to
cut
county
services,
commissioner Dan Brosnan said
Tuesday.
Brosnan told the Heppner
Chamber of Commerce that the
county is $700,000 short on their
budget this year and he and the
other commissioners will begin
meeting with department heads
soon to discuss where to cut.
"It is going to be pretty
devastating," Brosnan said o f the
task ahead. "We are going to get
into the real meat of the budget."
Brosnan said the only way to
reduce costs is to cut personnel,
and now all that's left is to decide
where.
The levy, which was defeated
county-wide by a 2-1 margin,
would have raised $1.5 million
per year for the next four years.
By Merlyn Robinson_________
Years ago if someone from my generation wanted more
information on a subject that wasn't fully discussed on the farmer
party phone lines, there were encyclopedias. Or we often sent for
books from the state library, before there was a local public library.
Today many people are turning to the Internet for everything
from information to stock options, banking and shopping. Yet
some o f those sources might not be anymore reliable than that
information once gleamed from those party line conversations. In
magazines, newspapers and television, they try to hook you with,
"If you want to know more, log on to www.whatever.com." I
suppose if one had a ingrown toenail you could access "
www.soretoe.com" and leam all about how you should have been
taken care of your 50-something old toenails. .
I’m a firm believer that you are never too old to leam something
new or useful, even it does take a bit longer to latch on. It's just
that I never had a hankering to leam a foreign language. However
it seems that if one is to acquire computer competency, you have
to upgrade your language skills.
Okay, I've accepted that a mouse isn't only a furry little creature
that scurries across the floor and evades traps. I've become quite
comfortable with this little piece o f plastic, even if the thing
doesn't always accomplish what I want. I'll also concede that
memory is reliably stored in something besides the brain, since
books have been written since the stone age. Storing information
on dicey little disks, that sometimes come up wordless, is perhaps
a good thing, since my mental cells often come up empty too.
As to computer savvy, the mention o f menu reminds me I'm
hungry or that I haven't thawed out any meat for dinner. Perhaps
I'll have to recycle what's in the refrigerator, unless it has to be
deleted in the trash bin.
When there's talk about RAM details, I picture a buck sheep and
wonder if he has all the necessary accessories for a herd sire. Alas,
my "hard drives" weren't the kind you face while sitting in a
comfortable chair at home. The hard drives I'm more familiar with,
involved long days in the saddle under a baking sun. That type of
cowboys could also be called floppy drivers. Other times those
hard drives required toughing it out in a snow or rain storm as your
digits turned to ice therefore lacking any system speed. City folks
should know that chips also refers to what a cow leaves behind as
ranchers routinely monitor their herds.
Slot machines are also known as slots. Or ranchers refer to the
number o f slots at a feed bunker. A drive bay may be in a
computer but it’s also where the feed truck is parked to keep it out
o f the weather. Scanning also refers to counting the number of
four-legged critters that need hay, just as I once assumed that you
needed a body o f water in order to surf. Likewise, a family blaster
may occur when little Johnnie plays his stereo too loud.
Now that I've latched on to some o f this computer terminology,
it's time to scroll over misspelled words. A spell checker often tries
to make sense out of gibberish. Also it's time to get my modem in
gear. Like the Alice in Wonderland fairy tale, I'll be late for a very
important date, if I don't get all my Christmas cards scribbled on.
I perhaps need to log on to a yule log- -just kidding- and if I had an
organized file manager in this computer perhaps it.would tell me
where I stored the Christmas decorations. Happy web searching!
