Heppner Elementary social studies teacher Karen Smith-Griffith
with fifth and sixth grade voters on election day.
Heppner Elementary School
fifth and sixth-graders are
experiencing
the
electoral
process first hand this year.
The children, all students of
HES social studies teacher Karen
Smith-Gnffith, made patriotic
hats, waved flags and voted in a
mock election on election day,
Tuesday, November 8.
Smith-Griffith reports that 83
percent o f the sixth graders and
81 percent of the fifth graders
cast their votes for presidential
candidate George W. Bush; with
the remaining 17 percent of fifth
graders and 19 percent of sixth
graders voting for A1 Gore.
As of press time Tuesday, it
still remained to be seen if the
HES classes were bellwethers for
the national election.
Smith-Griffith said that as the
two-week election project came
to a close, the students would
learn about Veteran's Day.
CBEC announces contest winners

Safety poster contest.

dinner held in Condon on
Thursday night.
Grange elects
officers
New officers were elected at
the October meeting of the
Lexington Grange.
New officers for 2000 are as
follows: Master, Barbara Gilbert;
Overseer, Tom Wilson; Lecturer,
Jean Nelson; Steward, Wilbur
Jackson; Assistant Steward, Ned
Clark; Lady Assistant Steward,
Kathleen Clark; Chaplain, Zelma

The charter was draped for
Beth Clark who had been a
grange member for over 60
years.
Plans were made to have a
table at the Artifactory on
Saturday, Nov. 18, to raise
money for the grange. The
Artifactory will be held from 10
a.m.-3 p.m.
Tobacco
prevention
meeting slated
A Tobacco Prevention meet­
ing will be held on Wednesday,
Nov. 15. at 4 p.m. in the confer­
ence room above Heppner Hard­
ware.
The discussion topic will be
underage tobacco use.
The public is invited to attend.
First place winners were
awarded $20 and second place
winners were awarded $10. The
competition was open to all
fourth graders in CBEC's service
territory and generated over 60
entries.
DA's Report
Morrow County District
Attorney David C. Allen reports
handling the following business:
Michael Dean Hendricks plead
guilty to two counts of contempt,
a crime, and was sentenced to 90
days incarceration, suspended,
with 18 months probation. He
was ordered to have no contact
with the victim and pay $684 in
fines, fees and assessments.
Daniel Alan Mathews was
found in violation o f probation
for manufacture o f a controlled
substance. His probation was
revoked and he was ordered to
serve six months in custody, with
12
months
post-prison
supervision. He may not be
considered for temporary leave
from custody, reduction of
sentence,
work
release,
alternative incarceration program
or program o f conditional or
supervised release.
Juan Antonio Sauceda-
Sanchez plead guilty to driving
under the influence of intoxicants
(alcohol), a crime, and providing
false information to a police
officer, a crime, and was
sentenced
to
180
days
incarceration with 150 suspended
and 24 months probation and
had his driver's license revoked
for 12 months. He was ordered to
attend a victim's impact panel,
complete an alcohol package and
pay $1,314 in fines, fees and
assessments.
Flood program
rescheduled
A television program on
floods, featuring film shot in
Heppner this summer, has been
rescheduled
for
Saturday,
November 18, at 2 p.m. on the
History Channel.
Heppner footage is included in
the first half of the show and also
over the closing credits.
