Colts lose to Kiwanis

The Heppner Colts saw their
record drop to 0-2 with a 14-6 loss
to the Kiwanis team from
Hermiston in Grid Kids action on
Wednesday, Sept. 20, in
Hermiston.
The Colts opened a 6-0 lead in
the first half on a 45 yard run by
Quinn Peck, but the Kiwanis team
scored a touchdown in each of the
third and fourth quarters to get the
win. Scotty Maker made a touch-
down-saving tackle in the fourth
quarter to keep the game close.
The Colts play at Stanfield on
Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 6 p.m.
The Colts lost their first game
of the season to Knerr Construc­
tion o f Hermiston. 14-6, in
Heppner on Sept. 13.
Casey Maben scored on a
fourth and goal from the one to
get the Colts to within 7-6 but a
long touchdown run by Knerr
Construction in the fourth quarter
hurt their chances for a come­
back.

Helix has traditionally been
one of the weaker volleyball
teams in the Big Sky League in
the past years. On Thursday,
September 28, however, the
Grizzlies gave a strong showing
and defeated the Lady Cardinals,
15-9, 9-15, 13-10, in a three
game match. The Lady Cardinals
had a good team effort, covered
the court well and had a strong
defense on the net but were
unable to keep up the momentum
to take the third game from the
Helix squad.
Chanssa Gates led the Cardinals
with 10 points, had one kill and
had 41 set assists. Amellia Peck
scored eight points, had 19 hits,
eight kills and led the team with
blocks. Salli McElligott had an
outstanding match with eight
points, led the team with serve-
receives, and hammered five hits,
two kills. Shelby Krebs scored
five points, nine hits, one kill and
two blocks. Diana McElligott
scored three points, had 10 hits,
one kill and three blocks.
The Cardinal junior varsity
team posted another victory
when they defeated Helix, 17-15,
15-8. Emily Key guided the
Cardinals with 11 points. Tracy
Griffith had a strong showing
with eight points and played the
entire court well. Meghan M.
McCabe posted five points, hit
well from the front row and was
key in getting the passes to her
hitters in the first game. Megan
E. McCabe had four points and
also did an outstanding job of
getting her sets to her hitters in
the second game. Caitlin Orem
scored three points and led the
team with set assists for the
entire match. Kristina Powell, a
newcomer to the Cardinal squad,
scored one point and was a
strong competitor at the net,
leading the team with blocks.
Dejah Haskett had well-placed
hits and did an phenomenal job
of getting to the ball in the back
row. Olivia Thompson scored
one point and has shown great
improvement on her back row
passes. Sarah Barrow also had,
noteworthy passing from the
back row.
Coach Cathy McCabe said she
was
pleased
with
the
performance of the entire team.
"All the girls worked extremely
hard, they had terrific teamwork
and did all the right things at the
right times," she said.

The lone Cardinal volleyball
team played excellent defense
and forced the Dufur Rangers
into a three game match before
losing 12-15, 15-10, 13-15.
Salli McElligott scored the
team-high of 11 points. Amellia
Peck scored eight points, had
four blocks and 17 hits, including
three kills. C'harissa Gates added
seven points to the Cardinals'
score. Diana McElligott had five
points, 18 hits, including four
kills. Shelby Krebs had five
points and Adrienne Swanson
added four points to the team
effort. Senior Jeanette Brantley
did an excellent job of hustling to
the ball in the back court, even
getting a pass on a diving dig in
the front court.
The team served an average of
88 percent, was 91 percent
successful on serve receives and
87 percent successful on hitting.
Coach Charity McElligott
credited the entire team for their
"huge" effort and expressed that
they all displayed excellent
teamwork the entire match.
lone falls to Condon in
hard-fought match
The lone Volleyball teams
played against Condon on
Tuesday, Sept. 26.
The Cardinal Varsity team
played their best match of the
season, forcing Condon into a
three-game match before they
fell to the Blue Devils, 15-11, 11-
15, 8-15.
Senior Shelby Krebs was the
leading point producer with 11
points, two aces and eight hits.
Chanssa Gates scored seven
points and led the team with set
assists. Amellia Peck scored six
points, led the team with serve
receives and "really raised havoc
on the net, clobbering 16 hits,
including 10 kills." Peck also did
an outstanding job defensively on
the net, leading the Cardinal
squad with blocks. Freshman
Emily Key came off the bench to
score five points, with two of
those serves unanswered for the
ace. Diana McElligott had two
points and 15 hits. Adrienne
Swanson scored two points and
had 18 set assists.
I"he team served 87 percent, hit
86 percent and was 86 percent
successful on the blocks.
Mustang JVs down lone 40-26

The Heppner Mustang JV foot­
ball team used an early lead to hold
off the visiting lone Cardinal JVs,
40-26, on Monday, Oct. 2. The
win moved the Mustangs' record
to 4-0 on the year.
The Mustangsjumped out to an
early lead as Donald Adams broke
free for a 62 yard touchdown.
Chuy Elguezabal ran in the two-
point conversion for an 8-0 lead.
Adams followed that up with a
three yard run for his second
touchdown and added the conver­
sion run to make it 16-0.
Elguezabal scored on a 12 yard
run and, after a failed conversion
pass attempt, the Mustangs took
a 22-0 lead after one quarter.
Kelly Paullus broke free for a
22 yard touchdown to make it 28-
0 before the Cardinals got on the
board.
lone's Brian Gutierrez scored
on a three yard run then hit Adam
McCabe for a 23 yard touchdown
to get the Cardinals to within 28-
12 at halftime.

Donald Adams made it 34-12
on a two yard run in the third quar­
ter.
The Cardinals’ Mike Radie
scored on a four yard run and
Gutierrez ran in the conversion to
make it 34-20. Billy Gates then
scored on a 38 yard run to get the
Cardinals to within 34-26 with five
minutes left.
Paullus broke free and scored
on a 68 yard run to give the Mus­
tangs some breathing room. They
were able to hold on for the win.
The game was played under
eight-man rules.
