Cards whip Lyle
Big first half carries Mustangs to win

The Heppner M ustangs ex­
ploded to a 48-0 lead at halftime
and coasted for a 62-12 win over
the visiting Wahtonka Eagles in the
Mustangs’ first home game o f the
year on Friday, Sept. 29. The
Mustangs improved to 2-0 in the
Columbia Basin Conference and
3-1 overall.
The M ustangs will play at
home on Friday, Oct. 6. against
the Weston-McEwen Tigerscots
in their next game. The game
against Culver the following week
has been moved to Thursday, Oct.
12, at 2:30 p.m. in Culver.
Heppner wasted no lime get­
ting on the board, taking over at
the Wahtonka 45 yard line after a
punt. For the second week in a
row,
M ichael McCabe took a

hand-off up the middle and broke
to the outside going for a 45 yard
touchdow n. Blake Know les
booted the extra point to give the
Mustangs an early 7-0 lead.
The Mustangs got the ball back
at their own 43 after a 22 yard
punt return by C raig Scott.
McCabe went for 11 and Scott ran
for six. Ryan Matteson then hit
Scott for a 27 yard pass, getting a
crushing block from Knowles.
McCabe then went for 13 down
to the two. Matt Baker then took
it in for a the Mustangs’ second
touchdown. Knowles’ kick was
good and. with 6:12 left, the Mus­
tangs led 14-0.
The Mustangs got the ball back
at their own 31 after a Wahtonka
punt and, after a hold, they were
moved back to the 24. Scott then
broke loose for a 47 yard gain.
Matteson hit Stefan Matheny for •
a 23 yard gain to the six. Scott
then took it in for the touchdown.
Knowles’ kick made it 21-0 with
1:41 left in the first quarter.
Matteson picked off a pass at
the five and returned it to the 30
to end an Eagle drive as the first
quarter ended.
Scott went for 11, Brad Adams
for four, then seven for a first
down. McCabe went for 13, then
five, but a fumble on the next play
w as recovered by Wahtonka at the
Eagles' 42 yard line.
Baker then recovered an Eagle
fumble on the next play at the 41.
Matteson hit McCabe for a 41
yard touchdown pass. The kick
was no good and the Mustangs
led 27-0.
The Mustangs got the ball back
at their own 45 and wasted no
time in scoring another touchdown
as Matteson hit Scott in stride
down the middle for a 55 yard
touchdown. Knowles’ kick was
good and the Mustangs led 34-0.
The Mustangs got the ball back
on the kick-off when Matheny hit
the returner, causing a fumble re­
covered by Matteson.
Kelly Paullus caught a fumbled
snap in the air and got a yard. A
personal foul penalty on the Eagles
took it down to the 14. Paullus
then went for 13 to the one and
Chuy Elguezabal sneaked it in for
the touchdown. Knowles’ kick
was good to make it 48-0.
The Mustangs got the ball back
as Trevor Rhea caused a fumble,
recovered by Daniel Jepsen.
A 49 yard field goal attempt
w'as short as the half came to an
end.
Elguezabal took the second half
kick-off 61 yards for a touchdown,
breaking several tackles along the
way. Tanner Britt hit Elguezabal
for the two-point conversion and
a 56-0 lead just 16 seconds into
the third quarter.
The Eagles then got on the
board, taking the ensuing kick-off
75 yards up the middle for a touch­
down. The kick v.as not good and
it was 56-6 just 29 seconds into
the third quarter.
That was all the scoring as the
teams traded possessions the rest
of the quarter. The Eagles missed
a field goal, then recovered a
Mustang fumble as the quarter
ended.

16 carries for 133 yards, made it
to the goal line twice for the
Cards.

ran for eight yards and completed

14 yards, and Mike Radie, one
touchdown on a short run. The
two-point try failed and it was now
56-12 early in the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs took over on
their own 35 after the kick-off.

five, then one and a first down.
Donald Adams went for five and
Paullus went for 16 to the 34.
Paullus went for eight. Brad
Adams for nine and Elguezabal hit

pass failed and the Mustangs led
62-12.
The Eagles were driving and
about to score when Paullus
caused a fumble which was re­
covered by Rhea at the one yard
line. Brad Adams went for 12 and
Donald Adams for 11 as the clock
ran o u t..
The defense was led by Paullus
w ith 29 defensive point and an in­
terception. Matteson had 13 points
in the first half with an intercep­
tion and a fum ble recovery.
Knowles and Baker each had 12

The Heppner Colts lost a close
game at S tanfield. 7-6, on
Wednesday, Sept 27. The loss
drops the Colts’ record to 0-3 on
the year with all three losses be­
ing close games. The Colts next
play at home on Wednesday, Oct.
4, against Columbia at 6 p.m.
The Colts took a 6-0 lead at
halftime on a short touchdown run
by Casey Maben. Stanfield scored
with two minutes left and kicked
the extra point to take the lead and
get the win.
