Dr. Datta speaks at Lexington Grange
IUCC to sponsor golf fun day
The fall meeting of the
Lexington Grange was held Sept.
18 with special guests Dr. Sam
Datta and his wife, Dr. Decpa
Datta and their two children,
Arogho and Shibam.
Dr. Sam Datta's parents, who
were visiting from Calcutta,
India, also attended. Dr. Datta
told of his schooling m India at
the Calcutta Medical School in
1989. Following this, in 1994, he
attended the Albert Einstein
College of Medicine in New
York City. He took some special
classes in Los Angeles before
coming to the clinic in Heppner
Dr. Deepa Datta is also a
qualified doctor, pathologist and
has had training in blood
transfusion medicine. At the
present time she is taking time
off to "be a mother".
When asked how he decided to
come to Heppner, Dr. Datta said
that he wanted to come to a
community
that
especially
needed a doctor. He is enjoying
the rural atmosphere and the

already learned to play baseball.
When asked about Calcutta he
said that he was raised in the "old
city" which has a 9-10 million
population. Steel mills are one of
the major industries. His father
has retired from being a
technician in the petri-chemical
department there. Dr. Datta says
that farming in India is still done
by hand labor with most farmers
working from daylight to dark
for a dollar a day. Farms are
about five-10 acres in size. Some
of their major crops are rice,
wheat and jute.
During the business meeting,

Wunderlich says the spiders
are "just about everywhere," but
cautions not to spray for the
spiders now because it will harm
the good spiders who prey on the
Hobo. Instead, she advises
spraying in the spring and, in the
meantime, caulking around doors
and cutting foliage back by steps
and entryways.
While the
spiders are "really on the move"
this time of year, they don't
climb, she says. The female
builds a funnel shaped web and
waits for the male.
The Hobo spider is caramel
colored with distinctive markings
on its back and solid colored
legs, compared to its helpful
cousin, which has striped legs.
The Hobo is blind, while the
cousin is not. The male Hobo has
sex organs in front which look
like two black boxing gloves. A
large male has a leg span the size
of a silver dollar.
Wunderlich says that traps
may be ordered at Green Feed in

Hobo spiders spotted in area
Pam Wunderlich of Heppner,
who became seriously ill last
year from a Hobo Spider bite,
says that she has obtained a
positive ID on a Hobo discovered
recently at her place near
Heppner
Wunderlich made more than
one trip to the emergency room
after a Hobo bit her several times
on the leg and foot. The Hobo
had crawled into her boot. She
says it took her almost a year to
completely recover from the
bites.
Wunderlich says there have
been many recent sightings of
Hobos and warns that the male of
the species is on the move
looking for a mate. She says that
the males are more aggressive
and may try to get into houses
seeking females. "There is no
cause for alarm, just awareness,"
adds Wunderlich.
Wunderlich says that she and
her husband found the Hobo
underneath the double-wide they
were putting up. Her husband.
Mark, had been putting skirting
on the mobile home when he
found the spider in a puddle. It
had just rained and the spider had
drowned.
