Transformer starts grass fire on Willow Creek
All stars line up on the field for opening ceremonies Saturday.
Fire broke out Tuesday afternoon near the Dick Wilkenson ranch on Willow Creek. The fire was
apparently started by an exploding electrical transformer which ignited the surrounding grass. No
amount of acreage or other details were available at press time.

clears former Lex recorder

and that $ 1,069 of city cash had
not been deposited. Kemp has
since resigned from the town
council.
During its investigation the
department interviewed
16
witnesses and examined city
documents and financial records
over a four year period. Baker
served as city recorder from June
1991 until her resignation May
31, 1999.
The Justice Department
turned over its 22 page report to
the city council May 11 stating
that it saw "inadequate evidence
to establish beyond a reasonable
doubt
that
Susan
Baker
committed a criminal offense in
this case."

After a 10 month investigation
into allegations that Susan Baker
misappropriated city funds while
serving as Lexington town
recorder, the Oregon Department
of Justice has decided not to
prosecute the case because of
lack of evidence.
Byron Chatfield, an attorney
with the Justice Department, said
he
has
completed
his
investigation of Baker and
concluded that there was
"inadequate
evidence"
to
establish guilt.
Allegations that Baker
misappropriated $38,894 of city
funds and services for her own
personal benefit were made last
year by then city councilmember
Marcia Kemp.
Kemp had alleged among other
things that Baker had overpaid

The Willow Creek Little
League and the Heppner
community welcomed the 11-12-
year-old Little League All Star
players and their fans to the
District 5 tournament which
began on Friday, July 14, in
Heppner.
In a welcoming address in
opening ceremonies at the
Kilkenny Field on Saturday, July
15, Willow Creek Little League
President John Murray said that
the tournament marked the first
time in three decades that
Heppner
had
hosted
a
tournament. Heppner Mayor Bob
Jepsen welcomed players and
fans and the Little League
District 5 president was also on
hand. Larry Mills, former CEO
of the Morrow County Grain
Growers, which donated the land
for the field, threw the first pitch.
A barbecue for players and their
families was held on Saturday
evening.
The Willow Creek Little
League All Star team included:
Robbie Smith, Lexington, Rory
Kilkenny, Kody Lovgren, Quinn
Peck and Riley Wight, all
Heppner, The Braves; Matt
Kenny, Kyle Carlson, J.C.
Sherritt, Colton Hanson, Roy
Proctor, Sloan Keithley,
all
Heppner, the Pirates; and Victor
Bednar, Condon, of the White
Sox; and coaches Curt Day,
Dennis Peck and Dave Allstott,
all Heppner.
The team lost their first game,
12-0, to Columbia, and their
second game, 7-3 to the
Hermiston team.
Other results in the double
elimination tournament are as
follows:
Friday, July 14: Hood River-18
vs. Sisters-8; Columbia (no
scores available) beat Deschutes;
Bend South-17 vs. Crook
County-1; Redmond-12 vs.
Hermiston-3.
Saturday, July 15: Hood River-
8 vs. Bend North-6; Columbia-12
vs. Willow Creek-0; Bend South-
19 vs. The Dalles-1; Jefferson
County-6 vs. Redmond-1.
Saturday, July 16: Hood River-
12 vs. Columbia-5; Jefferson
County-2 vs. Bend South-0; The
Dalles-7 vs. Sisters-2; Redmond-
4 vs. Deschutes-0; Bend North-3
vs. Crook County-2; Hermiston-7
vs. Willow Creek-3.
On Wednesday, July 19, The
Dalles will play Redmond at 5
p.m. on Field 1 and Bend North
will play Hermiston at 5:30 p.m.
on Field 2.
Thursday, July 20, Columbia
will play the winner of The
Dalles vs. Redmond game at 5
p.m. on Field 1 and Bend South
will play the winner of the Bend
North-Hermiston game at 5:30
p.m. on Field 2.
The winners
of those two games will face off
in game 20 on Friday, July 21, at
5:30 p.m. on Field 2. Hood
River will play Jefferson County
in game 19 on Saturday, July 22,
at 5 p.m. on Field 1. The loser of
game 19 will play the winner of
game 20 on Sunday, July 23, at
5:30 p.m. on Field 1 (game 21).
The winner of games 19 and 21
will play on Sunday, July 23, at
10 a m. at 10 .m. on Field 1.
Because a team must lose twice
to be out of the tournament, an
additional game is scheduled at 5
p.m. on July 23 on Field 1 if
needed.
