Sponsors make rodeo possible

Rodeo, saddles, buckles and
lots of silver always go together.
A trophy saddle or buckle always
represents talent, determination,
and lots o f guts. These beautiful
pieces o f work are always
admired by both the fans and
contestants. However, none o f
these things would be possible
without sponsors who donate
their time and money to support
the sport o f rodeo and help
attract
world
renown
competitors.
Last year fans watched world
champions such as the Etbauer
brothers, Mike Beers, Clint
Corey, Fred Whitfield, Martha
Josey and Katie McCom compete
for the trophy buckles, money
and saddle that are offered during
the rodeos on Friday and
Saturday night.
At the same time the local
Morrow County Jackpot Rodeo
also offers outstanding awards to
local contestants on Sunday.
Without
these
magnificent
awards fans would not see near
the quality competition.
Some o f the awards have a
great deal of history and memory
to them. The All-Around saddle
that is given away each year at
the Oregon Trail Pro Rodeo is a
tradition. This saddle has been
sponsored for 10 years by
Gardner's Men's Wear of
H eppiw . p u s trophy is hand-
craftecPIiy Saddle maker Rich
Boyer of Hermiston. Many
professional contestants compete
in events outside their specialty
area in hopes that their talents
will score high enough to bring
this trophy saddle home.
The second special award that is
given to the champion PRCA
calf roper in memory o f Mike
Currin. He was a very talented
cowboy from Heppner who was
killed in a plane accident in 1991
while on his way to the Calgary
Stampede. Family and friends
raise money each year so a calf
roping buckle can be given in his
memory.
On Sunday, during the Morrow
County Jackpot Rodeo another
hand crafted saddle is also given
away to the Morrow County
Amateur Calf Roper for that
year. This award has been given
away for 50 years by Kinzua
Resources L.L.C. Even though
the local mill is shut down now,
the sponsorship continues on
through the support o f the
business. The Morrow County
roper who has won less than
$1,000 in his or her lifetime "calf
roping" is eligible to compete for
the saddle. The contestant may
have won more money in other
events, just not calf roping. Last
year the saddle was won by
Butch Knowles of Heppner.
Some new awards have been
added over the past few years to
the pro show. Les Schwab Tire
Center of Heppner sponsors the
bull riding event and the added
bounty money for the cowboy
who draws and rides the "Bounty
Bull" during each performance.
This is an additional attraction
for contestants and fans.
Blue Eagle Travel also donates
$150 in bonus money to the
fastest time turned in by a barrel
racer and Anipro also sponsors
the Best Dressed Award each
day.
Each sponsor helps to put on
the professional show. Without
them, the rodeo could not bring
in stock like the Big Bend Rodeo
Co. provides or specialty acts
such as Ike Pryor who will be
this year's clown-barrelman.
The Oregon Trail Pro Rodeo
has 12 major sponsors from
Heppner and local communities.
These include Les Schwab Tire
Center of Heppner, Coca Cola
Bottling Co., o f Pendleton,
Finley Buttes Landfill Co. of
Boardman, United Rentals of
Hermiston,
Bucknum's
in
Heppner, Morrow County Grain
Growers of Lexington, Morrow
Cofififlf ” 'W heat
Growers,
Graybeal
Distributing
of
Pendleton, Thunder Country FM
94.9 of Kennewick, Thews Sheet
Metal o f Pendleton, Bank of
Eastern Oregon o f Heppner and
Gardner's Men's Wear of
Heppner.
The Sunday performance
attracts many locals because of
the great sponsors. Each event
has a trophy buckle, watch or
spurs donated to the champion of
the local event. This year the
champion buckle will have the
Oregon Trail Wagon on the face
of the buckle as well as green
gems.
The following sponsors
contribute
to
Sunday's
attractions: Green Feed and Seed,
Peterson's
Jewelers,
Healy
Family, Wrangler's Riding Club,
Van Marter and Kahl Insurance,
Pettyjohn's
Farm-Builders,
Heritage Land Company, Dick
Temple DVM, Gar Aviation,
Heppner Hardware/TrueValue,
Paul Hisler, Jr., Turner Ranch,
the Beamer Family and Les
Schwab Tire Center.
The 78th celebration of the
Oregon Trail Rodeo will take
place this year. Since it is the
year
"2000"
the
OTPR
Committee will raffle off a
millennium buckle much like the
champion buckles. Tickets can
be purchased at Green Feed and
Seed, Van Marter and Kahl
Insurance and Morrow County
Grain Growers.
Take some time over the next
month to look at the beautiful
work that has gone into making
these awards for the 78 th
celebration o f the Oregon Trail
Pro Rodeo. The saddles, buckles
and silver can be seen at Heppner
TV starting in July where it will
be on display for the public until
rodeo time.
From August 18-20, talent,
determination and victory will
earn this year's awards for the
Oregon Trail Pro Rodeo and
Morrow County Rodeo.
OTPR reserve
box seats
available
A limited number o f VIP
reserve box seat tickets are still
available for the annual Oregon
Trail Pro Rodeo and Morrow
County Rodeo, August 18-19.
Reserve box seats guarantee
the best viewing in the new
grandstands with backrests and
"ample arm room," said rodeo
spokesperson.
Seat prices are $36 each (with a
minimum o f four), good for all
shows during the three-day run.
Each box has eight or 10 seats
per box.
"Many ticket holders combine
family and friends to purchase an
entire box," said an OTPR news
release. "Many businesses buy
tickets to compliment their best
customers
and/or
reward
employees."
Place ticket requests by calling
(541)676-5114.
The reserve area will be
patrolled this year to ensure that
tickets holders get the "most
enjoyment and value from their
seats," the release said.
"Get your family and friends
together and come on down and
enjoy the cowboys, rough stock
and clown entertainment; there's
nothing better for family fun than
rodeo," said the spokesperson.
